Rob Bironas Is Gonna Need To Ice His Leg Tonight

Glancing at some scores from the early games today, I remember seeing that the Titans were beating up on Houston, 32-7 in the third and Matt Schaub sidelined with an injury, and thinking to myself that the game was as good as over.

Thus began one of the most ridiculous fourth quarter comebacks in recent memory, with Texans backup Sage Rosenfels tossing four touchdown passes and a two-point conversion in less than thirteen minutes (and he used everybody: nine players had at least one catch for Houston). After trailing by 25 at one point, Houston actually led, 36-35, with less than a minute to play.

They might have pulled off the improbable victory if not for the Magical Foot of Tennessee's Rob Bironas. The third-year kicker accounted for 26 of the Titans' eventual 38 points, with eight field goals in eight attempts and a pair of extra points. And in case you're wondering: yes, eight field goals is a single game record. The previous mark of seven had been held by four different players, most recently Dallas' Billy Cundiff in September 2003.

Bironas' last boot wasn't the longest, but it was the most important: a 29-yarder with no time left to give Tennessee a 38-36 win. It was actually his fourth longest kick in an afternoon filled with chip shots, ironic for a guy who less than a year ago nailed a 60-yarder to beat Indianapolis. His final yardage totals, in order: 52, 25, 21, 30, 28, 43, 29, 25. Just a thought, and it's hard to second guess a win, but in the future Jeff Fisher might want to consider taking a chance and punching it in when the offense is in the red zone.
