I wish you could have been around to see Brent's final years at CBS. No network announcer has been more overexposed before or since. When Brent was shown the door, he was the host of The NFL Today, host of the NBA playoffs/finals, lead college basketball announcer, lead MLB announcer, host of the Masters and The Belmont Stakes, hosted CBS's version of Wide World of Sports (CBS sports spectacular)...he was everywhere. If you think you see a lot of Nantz and Buck today, this is nothing in comparison.
That's really interesting. I definitely knew Brent had almost all of those assignments but didn't think he had them overlapping in his final years at CBS. I've seen the footage of his goodbye on CBS. Being a younger guy, I heard it was more of a changing of the guard to make way for Nantz. What's your take on his departure?
Making way for Nantz definitely was a consideration but a lot was Brent becoming very power-hungry. Also, keep in mind that Brent's persona back then was very different (he was a condescending twerp IMO) than it is today (a veteran announcer having a great time announcing his games).
