The announcers doing the Rutgers-Navy game three weeks ago did the same thing. Rutgers was up 3 with 30 seconds left and had 4th down in easy FG range. The color guy kept saying why don't they just take a knee instead of risking a blocked FG, and the play-by-play guy agreed with him. Rutgers missed the kick but won the game.

Actually, not only did he figure it out (or get told), which is rare enough, he was honest enough to say "My bad, nevermind, good play."

Most announcers would have just let it go and signed off of the broadcast without acknowledging the mistake, and Dan Dierdorf would've gone off for five minutes about how, 4th down or not, he was still right.

At least he figured it out (or was told) faster than Joe Buck in the Cowboys game when Felix Jones ran out of bounds on fourth down. Great play! Oh, never mind.

What really sells the badness of the quote is that Bentley didn't just fail to grasp the implications of the down, that would be understandable. It's that he apparently didn't know what down it was.
