Philadelphia Radio Announcer Merrill Reese Freaks Out
The Philadelphia Eagles found a new way to comically blow yet another game, losing embarrassingly to the Buffalo Bills 24-31 after falling behind to a huge deficit early in the game. This loss wouldn't be so bad if they were like, you know, playing up to their collective abilities. However, with over a quarter of the season gone, it very well could be that the Eagles just plain stink. Good thing they just spent the GDP of a small nation on Michael Vick and all those free agents, as their One-and-Four record is falling just a little bit short of all the pre-season expectations heaped upon the squad.
Listen as the Philadelphia Eagles radio announcer Merrill Reese freaks out after an offsides violation on 4th and inches, with 1:23 to go in the game. Their sad-sack defense probably wouldn't have stopped the Bills anyways, but this is still enjoyable to everyone that doesn't cheer for the Iggles:

jdwvu: It's in a bunch of papers, from the Houston Chronicle to the Washington Post. Your definitiion of being a blogger suggests that my 10-year-old can sit down and write intelligently on any subject in the world. Believe me, I like this site. But Matt clearly doesn't know how the NFL is set up _ the league and .com are separate entities on separate coasts. This likely was done by some "clever'' advertising person who doesn't work for the NFL anymore because Goodell's people were outraged (.com people work for Steve Bornstein and Goodell trumps him.) As noted, it's one e-mail or better, a phone call, where you can explain more easily. All you do is cheapen the site when you put this out, right down to NFL showing "their'' hypocrisy instead of "its.''
Bloggers aren't journos, I don't really come here expecting the evening news. That said, I'm sure you won't find this story in any sports sections across the country.
Your Charles post needs reporting, not ranting. Do you really think Goodell posted that? It was some midlevel Fantasy nerd who thought he was clever and someone on .com authorized it. I'd guess from what I heard in an exchange with a senior NFL official is that someone got fired over it. The NFL is not a monolith. All it took on your part was a call or e-mail to Aiello or McCarthy or Signora and you'd have context for your blog. I like you guys and like almost everyone else, you're dead right on this one. But you lose credibility when you don't at least TRY to find out what happened. You wouldn't accept it from ESPN or any other network so why shouldn't your readers expect it from you? When I read abouit it, I e-mailed someone way up the food chain. He was already appalled and told me it was coming down. You probably couldn't get to him, but you certainly could get a PR type. Guess what? It works. Yeah, I'm an old reporter, but I like blogs. The problem here is that you needed to added just a bit of old-school reporting to what comes across as a conspiracy theory rant.
