Chad Johnson's planned VH1 reality show canceled as Ocho's reputation plummets

on .

You'd have a hard time finding anyone to dispute the notion that VH1 made the right decision--ethically and even from a business standpoint--in canceling Chad Johnson's new reality show, which was set to premiere on Sept. 3.

Johnson was arrested on a misdemeanor domestic violence charge over the weekend. The wide receiver formerly known as Ochocinco allegedly head-butted his new wife, Evelyn Lozada, who was also slated to co-star with Johnson in the show.

"Due to the unfortunate events over the weekend and the seriousness of the allegations, VH1 is pulling the series Ev and Ocho from its schedule and has no current plans of airing it," the network said in a statement Monday, via People.com.

Johnson and Lozada had been married less than six weeks prior to the incident, which has now cost the 34-year-old two separate jobs in as many days. He was released by the Miami Dolphins Sunday.

If indeed Johnson pulled a Zinedine Zidane in his driveway, the biggest shame will be that he'll have severely tarnished his image. We've always given him so much rope because, while he's eccentric and often disruptive, he's never been perceived as a bad guy. His value to the common football fan, now, lied in what he'd bring to HBO's Hard Knocks, which features the Dolphins this preseason and began airing last week.

I might not have watched Johnson's reality show, but that's just because reality shows are usually dull and tiresome. I'll say this, though: if I had to watch any reality show this fall, it would have been that one. That's because Johnson entertains me, which is something most athletes fail to do out of uniform. He's genuinely funny and his antics are quite original.

And that's the second, less significant reason why this alleged incident is such a shame. We've been robbed of the ability to view Johnson as a well-meaning rascal. If indeed he's eventually found guilty of such a crime, people will--and should--boycott Johnson in the media. Don't be surprised if VH1 severs ties permanently, regardless of the outcome. Sponsors don't want to attach themselves to those who have nasty arrests associated with them.

Again, the jury's not even out yet, but the court of public opinion will judge Johnson anyway. And a man who endeared himself to a whole new audience on ABC's Dancing With the Stars will likely lose a lot of those fans.

Chad Johnson might still have a promising media career ahead of him as individuals have come back from scandal many times before, but this incident has reduced the height of his ceiling.

@sheshe463 She found a receipt for condoms not the actual box or individual one.  This woman is a loose cannon.  Unfortunately Chad got mixed up with her.  I must agree with you james in florida.  Evelyn provoked Chad and he had no other choice but to  defend himself.  I'm sure Chad briefly thought about morals etc. but some people will make a person forget and loose all of their respect and religion.  I'm sure she forced his alleged regretable actions.  She was not worth this man loosing his career over her  imaginable behavior.  I pray that Chad's future holds BIGGER and BETTER things for him.  This to shall pass!  God sits high but looks low!!!

SheShe463, you obviously haven't watched Evelyn on Basketball wives. This lady has absolutely no class, no culture and is a stark raving mad woman. Here is a woman who would jump across(literally) a conference room table because someone on the other side said something she didn't like. She also three a champagne bottle and attempted to slap someone on live television. This trash of a woman is nothing more than a glorified whore who undoubtedly head-butted him as stated from his side. She has shown repeatedly how she deals with conflict, on more than several occasions she has said how she wants to fight... what kind of a grown woman does that? I can tell you; a low-classed mindless glorified whore!

So it's Evelyn fault that he felt the need to buy condoms and cheat first, then it was her fault again for upsetting her new husband to the point where he just had to head-butt her???  Are you serious?  Golddigger or whatever, Chad is responsible for his own actions.  These kids get all this money and think they are invincible and can do whatever they want and say whatever they want!  Well not so and all these cuts shows just how true this is.  They all need a lesson in humanity and  to recognize that you can't put your hands on anyone, no less a woman!  If she was such a terrible person, then why the hell would he marry her?  Think about it!  There sure wasn't a gun at that wedding!!!

It's a shame what Johnson has allowed to happen to him.  It sounds like a set up to me and he fell right into the trap.  If the allegations are true, he allowed his new wife of "six weeks" to push a button he should have programed to stay off.  All of the women out here are not gold diggers but they exist.  My point is, these young men getting rich in the sports industry need to investigate the women they get themselves involved with before marrying them.  They should date for at least two years before making such a commitment.  I do understand that a prenup was in order which was smart on his behalf but there are other ways she can get money out of him by suing him for other damages.  To sum this up, young men, please remember what happen to Mike Tyson.

@awfulannouncing You mean he actually had a reputation to begin with? I mean a reputation other than a loud-mouth, show-off, prima donna?
