David Feherty to appear at Navy-Notre Dame game in Ireland

Written by Joe Lucia on .

Golf Channel analyst David Feherty will be appearing at Saturday's Notre Dame-Navy football game from Dublin, Ireland. Feherty's role will apparently be to "ask fans if they can figure out American football" according to USA Today.

This is an... intriguing  idea from the people at CBS, but I'm really not sure how it's going to come across on TV. It almost seems, dare I say, a little bit hokey. Having an Irish golf reporter ask fans at a football game in Ireland what they know about football? That's certainly unique, but you don't see other networks doing this. Could you imagine ESPN having Ian Darke go to one of the NFL games in London and ask the fans what they know about American football? It just doesn't seem like a great fit to me.

However, if anyone can pull this off and make it anything but bland, it's the charismatic Feherty. His multiple TV and radio appearances have shown that he's a bright, entertaining commentator with a quick tongue. I just have no idea how that's going to work in this situation. It'll be interesting to see, that's for sure. But make sure you're up early... due to CBS's coverage of US Open tennis on Saturday and the time difference involved, the game from Dublin starts at 9 AM eastern.

BBlase3 yes it was on CBS in 1996, because CBS has shown the Notre Dame Fighting Irish VS Navy Midshipmen games on uneven numberd years since the early 1990 i believe!!!

I remember when Notre Dame and Navy played in Ireland in 1996, they did the exact same segment where they asked Irish people questions about football and then had a laugh about the wrong answers that people gave. I can't remember what network the game was on in 1996 though. I was only 12 at the time. It may have been CBS.

I also know that CBS is sending it's #1 College Football announcing team of Verne Lundquist, Gary Danielson and Sideline Reporter Tracy Wolfson to this game too, becase Ian Eagle said so when he was announcing the CBS NFl Preseason game between the Houston Texans at New Orleans Saints with Phil Simms and sideline reporter Lesley Visser last Saturday!!

This sounds like the sort of thing Fox would do...

I can see this having a "goofy personality yukking up in the crowd during [insert middling MLB team here] broadcasts" type of feel...  but if anyone can pull it off, it's Feherty.
