High school PA announcer fired for attending rival team's playoff game?
Written by Matt Yoder on .
High school football is a very serious thing for millions of people around this great country. In many communities across America, the first kickoff at the local stadium is one of the most anticipated dates on the calendar. In some places, high school football is legit news... especially when there's a controversy surrounding the firing of a local PA announcer.
Holmes County Blue Devils public address announcer Rickey Callahan was relieved of his duties after 12 years serving the Bonifay, FL school. He says principal Eddie Dixon fired him for appearing in the stands at a playoff game last year supporting local rival Chipley. Callahan says he wanted to support Chipley representing the district, but someone powerful at Holmes County didn't appreciate the friendly support. The schools are located about 9 miles apart on US 90 in the Florida panhandle. You can listen to Callahan's side of the story and what he believes to be a politically motivated firing by Dixon in the news story above from WTVY in nearby Dothan, Alabama.
Again: a high school football public address announcer says he was fired for attending another school's playoff game. Here's hoping Rickey Callahan gets his job back because sometimes high school football is a way too serious thing.

It is fairly common in my part of the country to support your conference/district/county team after your own team has been eliminated from the playoffs. This seems farcical.
It's silly that Callahan lost his job over that. Hopefully that situation will be rectified.
Last year while doing color commentary for the Father Ryan High School/Battle Ground Academy game on ATW Sportscast I was surprised to hear Titans play-by-play man Mike Keith doing PA duties for the night for BGA. You never know who you'll hear/see behind the mic...
Having taught for 34 years, this is something I would expect from a school principal! I saw my share of incompetency.
since when is it a national crime to attend another school's sport activities. What if he had children or cousins there? What if a relative died and he supported that child at their game since the parent could not be there due to their death? You can't get milk from one cow to fill a store's shelf, there are several cows that give milk to meet needs of others.
In Texas, where the sport is a quasi-religion, I follow my team all season, but it is not strange or unusual for enthusiasts like Callahan to go and watch a district rival and even support them in the playoffs, especially when your team is out. There was a team in our district 2 years ago that played in a state quarterfinal game. 43,000 showed up in Rice stadium to watch the game. I guarantee you many of those there had no direct ties to either school, but wanted to see a great football game by 2 good teams. We were not disappointed. Unless there's more to this story than what is here, this is absolutely ridiculous and someone in a position of authority should rise up and make a statement to support Callahan. Otherwise, someone tell Callahan to come to Texas. He'll be welcome here.

Wow! No wonder there isn't anymore sportsmanship in sports. It starts from the top
Hanging chad, must have swung the vote. Clip the chad and give him his job back. Reprimand the principal for unsportsmanlike conduct. Penalize his behavior - he must attend a season of football games of other district teams.
politics, and if ur team lost in the district cheer on the one that will win it for the entire districts, that principle should be fired!
@Warchant_DC @awfulannouncing - if I were fired announcer, i'd have told principal, "hey, just cheering for a winner. When can we have one?"
@awfulannouncing k we take football seriously down here. what if he was spying? haha
@taylorkirksey from the video he doesn't strike me as the mastermind spy type, but i suppose you raise a valid point...
@awfulannouncing I like the idea that the PA announcers firing was "political." Principal must not have agreed with his solution for Syria.
@Warchant_DC @awfulannouncing over the top. hope he gets his job back. sounds like discrimination to me.
