Video: Chad Johnson gets cut on Hard Knocks for the world to see
Written by Matt Yoder on .
It's simply one of the more compelling pieces of footage you'll see from a sports documentary. We wondered in anticipation what tonight's Hard Knocks episode would bring with Chad Johnson's domestic violence arrest and subsequent release from the Miami Dolphins and it delivered to viewers in a big way. Hard Knocks had behind the scenes footage of Miami Head Coach Joe Philbin calling Chad Johnson in to his office to talk to the troubled wide receiver.
It's amazing to actually witness one of these conversations take place and just how delicately Philbin lets Johnson down. Never does he tell Johnson "I'm cutting you" or "you're gone" but rather he tells Johnson that he's a good person and "I don't see the mesh right now." You can see it in Johnson's eyes that his career is on the line as he pleads to stay in the Dolphins program. Philbin finally gets down to business in the most unassuming way possible and tells Chad Johnson "I think it's best for both of us that we kinda part ways at this point in time." This is as real as it gets, and it's why Hard Knocks continues to be at the top of the sports doc field.
@john_zeleznik The video was removed. Googled it and it was removed from all sites. Fishy. Would have liked to see it. Another wasted talent
Evelyn is a total bitch, and I bet she started the fight, just watch Basketball Wives and you will see what I mean.....Oh , and I am a woman saying this.
@James inFlorida just because Evelyn choses to act like an ass, does that mean it's okay the bash her head in? A real man would walk away, but then again a real man wouldn't have married her. They don't have any room to talk about each other, but me being someone who doesn't act in that manner, like I said, he was, and always will be responsible for his own actions! They didn't call Evelyn into that meeting, Because it isn't about her. It's about him, just like I was saying! Sometimes we can't see the forest for the trees. Also James, real men don't go around calling women whores and the such either! Now may you hae a good evening!
@sheshe463 @James Yea who really cares who started the fight. Point is he got kicked off the team because he wanted to act unprofessional after he was warned about his behavior.
The really odd thing about all this is Mr. Obama hasn't stuck his nose in it and called the Dolphins and all of us Dolphins fans racist because they cut Chad. He held a national news conference to call all white Humans racist when the white Human cop arrested the black Human. But he can't support his boy Chad. Very sad since he supports that dog killer Vick.
Is that the best you can come up with? I didn't vote for the racist ineligible Commie. So I refuse to disrespect the Presidency that great men such as George Washington and the others have held, by using the term President when referring to Mr. Obama. When the guy decides to act like a President and not some childish kid who loves to insult the American people and America when ever possible. He still won't have me call him President.
She probably bashed him first, haven't you seen Basketball Wives? Once Ghetto always Ghetto.
@caniha Makes no difference. It says he hit a woman. So now he can go into porn and fail at that also.
TV has become a circus freak show if this scene gets praise for "compelling pieces" of sports documentary. Chad is not a good man, but he does not need to be further embarrassed by having the whole world peer in. At one of the most emotional moments in life, that is, losing prospects to employment, there should be the decency of privacy to cover the tenderness of the moment. For those who have lost work, that moment brings about the worst feelings of life, and I wouldn't want anyone to have filmed that moment. Yes, he's a celebrity, and he's tried to get the public's attention, but only on terms to which he commands. I have doubts that Johnson wanted to be moment to be filmed, to be replayed, to be seen by his closest friends and family.
To suppose that Philibin "delicately" handles the business implies prejudice against the CJ, and not the reality of how the action was performed. What can be seen as non-direct comes off as unauthentic, un-genuine, especially for an event that bubbles up raw emotions. This is not the typical cutting the player because of his on-field performance, but off-field _allegations_ of what happened.
Let us describe situations of domestic abuse within the NFL:
Dez Bryant has faced two lawsuits facing non-football issues in shoplifting, as well as hitting his mother, and still remains with the Dallas Cowboys.
Donte Stallworth pleaded guilty to a DUI manslaughter, that is involving the fatality of one’s life, not _allegations_ of domestic violence. The Browns in that instance were justified in terminating his contract
Brandon Marshall, formerly WR of the Miami Dolphins has had a _long_ alleged history of domestic abuse, but was still allowed to play for 2 seasons with the Miami Dolphins. The ownership of the team let Marshall to continue playing even after he stabbed his wife.
Well it’s Joe Philbin trying to change the culture of the club, you say? Earlier last year, with the Green Packers (Philbin’s old team) LB Erik Walden was arrested for domestic violence, but was only suspended 1 game, not having his contract voided.
The Dolphins never had the Chad Johnson’s back, and by airing this footage, they’d rather kick him when he’s down. The Miami Dolphins are an organization far from class.
Kind of low that the Dolphins filmed and released this...actually Chad Johnson handles it with more class, than whoever made the decision to go public with this...
@MarkConnolly Totally agree with you. They sure did used the situation at their advantage...Rating,rating,rating.
Everything was scripted .I'm pretty sure the coach was talking to himself on the phone....But I never watched that show (never knew it existed),so,who knows...
@pkl13 "Everything was scripted .I'm pretty sure the coach was talking to himself on the phone" then you follow it up with "But I never watched that show"
Hmmmmmmmm
@pkl13 Nope. Its you who misssed them. FYI Nancy a "scripted" reality show is when the producers go to the cast and say "Ok today we're going to have you do this and this and while youre doing this youll get into an argument with this person but dont worry theyre one of us"
You really think that the Producers of Hard Knocks went to the Chad Johnson and said "OK Chad, today we're going to have you get into a fight with your wife, (supposedly) head butt her and end up in jail. THEN, to top it all off, we'll have cameras rolling when we have Coach Philbin hand you your walking papers"
Now THAT would be scripted - funny with your incredible intuition to pick something up out of a 5 min video Im kinda surprised you missed that.
But then again maybe Im wrong, maybe you CAN passs judgement on something you have had very (or until today NO) interaction with. I mean there ARE some days when I can have a fairly brief conversation and almost right away I can judge that they have ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA WHAT THEYRE TALKING ABOUT.
Nite Nancy
@pkl13 "Everything was scripted" < your quote Perhaps you should look up the word "scripted" in relation to reality tv shows.
Now that youve done that - I never said it was scripted. I said "No the camera just didnt "happen to be there" and yes the documentary director knew that CJ was coming in" - what do you expect, theyd have a camera following around every member of the organization? Give your head a shake.
You still dont get it do you - you passed judgement one SOMETHING YOUVE NEVER SEEN. not just an inkling or a thought but definitive judgement. Your first comment on this board read "WTF is that? A TV show or what? Did he knew he was filmed" and you go from that to "its scripted" in two posts based on a 5 minute video? And I never said YOU took anything out of context, read what I wrote again
You said it was scripted - thats passing judgement. Sad that I have to explain these things to an adult
THAT was the point you missed - twice now
@mwpw13 Of course Johnson's part wast scripted, loll (euh...it was,but not what he said and how he reacted to it)
The whole thing was tho.You said so yourself!
And what "judgment" did I passed (we're talking abt a TV show here, lol)??
I commented on what I saw, nothing else.I took nothing out of context, all I said was based on a 5mins(or so...) YT vid.Thats it!
What point did I missed...
@pkl13 No the camera just didnt "happen to be there" and yes the documentary director knew that CJ was coming in... its a REALITY SHOW! They go to the team and say "so whats on tap today" and decide what they want to film. When Coach Philbin tells em ""Well Im lettin Chad Johnson go today" they of course jumped all over it. It wasnt "scripted" - that would imply that Chad Johnson got into this mess just to add drama to the show!
The point is (and its quite obvious now) that youre passing judgement on SOMETHING YOUVE NEVER SEEN! You basing everything on a <5 min video that, in itself, is take out of context.
But thanks for missing the point ;-)
@mwpw13 So the camera just happened to be there? The doc director did not know Johnson was coming in the "office" and that he was going to be fired??
Are they filming the coach's phone calls all day long?
The cameras were there,at the right spot, by chance?
Hmmmmmmmmmmm
@MarkConnolly Kinda low how they handled this? You're kidding right. Chad used the cameras to his benefit throughout his career and now that the camera is on him being released you think that's low? LOL LOL Ridiculous. What goes arond comes around Conolly.
What Chad Johnson needs to realize is that football is a professional sport and he is or has been less than professional. The Dolphins needed his head to be in the game, not on some reality show with his ghetto, no class having, wannabe girlfriend. He and other idiots like Terrell Owens, that throw their career away are going to learn that "this sh!t is chess, it ain't checkers." denzel washington, training day
For a one month marriage and one time incident,Chad has lost a lot. This is an eye opener for men that your personal can overshadow your abilities and talent. I think he should have been given a suspension with anger management counseling. Also, he should see a lawyer about getting this one month marriage annulled. At this point, it is a he said/ shesaid on who started the physical aspect of the fight. As a man,you need to keep your hands or head to yourself and run away as quickly as possible. In domestic disputes, the law is more favorable to the woman. So, if you're a man in a rare situation of being abused, you need to retreat away from the situation ASAP. Don't be afraid to contact the police & turn on your video option in your camera phone to have vidoe proof to not be the aggressor. If you truly with god as your witness didn't start this and now unemployed because of it, you have learned not to connect with females with issues, document the situation as it happens(turn on the video cam on your phone), and get away from the situation as quickly as possible. Never hit a female even if she hits you first. The female is not going to lose her job or livelihood .At this time, she won the he said/ she said battle on who hit who. The one thing tha gave me doubt is that you have a lot of women and you just move on to the next. So, I don't think you would fight a 40 yr old Evelyn because the arriage is breaking up. I can see a 40 yr ld Evelyn feeling scorned, angry, and wanting to take you down. i don't think any other athletes will be pursuing a 40 yr old Evelyn. So, I thought about that to help bring a doubt in my mind hat you were the aggressor Chad.
What happened to innocent until proven guilty ? He might be bad but she ain't no better.
@StanThornburg Innocent until proven guilty went out of style in America 4 yrs ago. Now back to Football.
I don't care about either of these guys, but this is the equivalent of a snuff film. I have no idea why any NFL team allows cameras in for something like this.
@dmtshooter "this is the equivalent of a snuff film" Really? You equating this to video of someone getting KILLED?
You must REALLY like Chad Johnson ;-)
@mwpw13 You must have never have had your employment terminated. Or provided for anyone.
WTF is that? A TV show or what?
Did he knew he was filmed? Cant believe what I just saw.....
Will that old skinny coach (that CANT flex his muscle cuz he doesnt have any) be filmed when the Dolphin kick him out???
I know Chad is a jerk...
But the "circus" here is the Dolphin.
@pkl13 Hard Knocks is a show that follows the Dolphins during training camp. It airs on HBO on Tuesday at 10est.
Chad is a Circus .. similar situation (without the girl) happening at New England .. hard to be surprised with what is going on in Miami ! My thoughts float to the perfect fit .. so how long before the New York Jets call him .. I mean a media circus .. qb's that can't hit
a receiver .. having a receiver that doesn't get the playbook seems to fit right in ~
I'm always amazed at people who are better at sports then anything else they can do make a great living at it and screw it up with plain stupidity. Guess he didn't get the memo that when you smack a woman around, you lose. Now comes the civil suit.
Wow, great stuff from Hard Knocks. Very well done. And I don't feel bad for him whatsoever. He's an unprofessional clown that brings everything upon himself. Maybe getting cut will finally be a wake up call for his life. Maybe... but I doubt it.
@CollegeWolf His fans who want that hope so. He hit a woman so I hope he get's hit hard with a lawsuit.
The Dolphins Owner wanted us on Hard Knocks. So you got us on Hard Knocks. It's got nothing to do with the Dolphins Football team. Chad "Whatever his last name is" was warned about acting like a dirt bag on Hard Knocks. Then knowing full well that the Dolphins were on that show ,he said he was going to get arrested. He got arrested. So hey if you want to talk trash on the Dolphins go right ahead. But look at the facts. Of course they were going to put that on Hard Knocks. Did you all really think that they would keep that off of the show?
Kids look up to these guys. So with Chad dropping the F bomb and then having reports saying he doesn't do media anymore, which made it look like he was throwing a tantrum, because Coach told him to cool it with his foul mouth. As a Dolphins fan i'm glad they cut him. I want to be rooting for Professional's on and off the field. Not clowns like Chad who can't stay professional off the field and then make the organization look bad because of it.
As a Bengals Fan, I have seen the best and the worst of Chad-Ocho. We learned to love him and began to be annoyed by him. I think if he just got back to his want to play for the love of the game man, he could have one last fling with a team. CC says " COME ON MAN!!!!!!!" Just figure your self out and shut T F Up and play football! I wish him the best, but good luck finding a team to take on his 3 ring saga.
i have always detested how and what this sos repesents...but, dolphins beat out any stupid thing that johnson has done !! go bears
now thats kicking a dog when its down ,,, cheapshot by the fish who need anybody to catch anything ,,,, no respect for a persons private affairs ,,,, may you dolphins finish last ,,,, low class organization ,,, & small wonder you ve been lousy so long ,,,,
The coach needs coaching on the proper way to handle a termination. That was not done very well.

Wow, compelling stuff. RT @awfulannouncing Video: Chad Johnson gets cut on Hard Knocks for the world to see
