Your Week 1 College Football Announcing Schedule

Written by Matt Yoder on .

College football is now officially back because your opening week college football announcing schedule has arrived!  And the best part about the 2012 season... no Craig James!  Let's pause for a brief happy dance!

All righty then.  Craig James is out of the booth this season and so is AA flagbearer Pam Ward.  Don't worry though, the Pammies will always be a part of Awful Announcing (at least until we're overthrown in a bloodless coup... well, hopefully it'll be bloodless).

If you're new around these parts, here's how things work.  Every Wednesday or Thursday we'll post the college football announcing schedule for the weekend's games.  Before the Thursday night games (and again Saturday morning) our Pam Ward Chronicles thread will go live.  That's where you'll leave the best, funniest, most inappropriate, and highly dubious announcer quotes in the comments.  You can also tweet us announcer quotes by using the hashtag #PWAA.  On Monday, we'll collect the top 15 or so nominees for your vote and Wednesday the votes be tallied and the standings will be released.  At the end of the season, we'll crown our 2012 Pammies Champion.  Got it?  Good.

Here's your Week 1 college football announcing schedule...

The Notre Dame college football analyst this year , has been changed from Allen Pinkett to Jeff Jeffers!!!

on Saturday the Compass Media broadcasters for the Miami Hurricanes at Boston College Eagles were Gregg Daniels and Tony Hill!!!

Last Friday the Sports USA broadcasters for the Boise State Broncos at Michigan State Spartans were John Ahlers and Gary Barnett!!!

Last Saturday working the Chick-Fil-A Kickoff Classic between the Auburn Tigers VS The Clemson Tigers for Dial Global were John Tautges and Terry Donahue!!!

Last Saturday working the Hawaii Warriors at USC Trojans game for ESPN Radio were Rich Cellini,John Mackovic and sideline reporter Brett Mcmurphy and ESPN Radio had Bill Rosinski, David Norrie and Joe Schad as the Sideline reporter for ESPN Radio's coverage of the NC State Wolfpack VS Tennessee Volunteers last friday night and the Cowboys Classic between the Michigan Wolverines Vs the Alabama Crimson Tide last Saturday night!!!

DanielOrmsby
DanielOrmsby

@CUbsfan Not quite. Jeff Jeffers is actually the sideline reporter for the Notre Dame IMG Network. However Allen Pinkett has been suspended by IMG for 3 games because of his "Catholics need convicts" comments, so Jeff Jeffers will be doing the color commentary for the first 3 games. He will move back to the sideline for Notre Dame's 4th game.

The one college radio network you don't mention in those comments- Touchdown Radio Productions, which did the South Carolina at Vanderbilt game last Thursday. I published all these announce teams on my blog- eyeonskyandairsports.blogspot.com, 5 days ago. I actually already have the Week 2 announce teams up on the site.

Tom Rinaldi was the sideline reporter for the Ohio at Penn State game on ESPN on Saturday Morning and it isn't necessarily true that ESPN normally has 2 sideline reporters just for it's bowl games Daniel, because after Joe Paterno got fired last year, ESPN had Lisa Salters and Tom Rinaldi at the sideline reporters for the Nebraska at Penn State Regular Season game on the 2nd Saturday of November last year!

It is also interesting that Maria Taylor is a Sideline Reporter for College Football mostly on ABC this year, becaue last year she was the Sideine reporter for the MountainWest Championship game in College Basketball on VERSUS!

DanielOrmsby
DanielOrmsby

@CUbsfan CUbsfan, you misread what I said, and your infor is also flawed.

1) I said that ESPN had said they weren't going to have any 4-man teams this season until the bowl games. That comes from insider information. Obviously they changed that because of the continuing Penn State story, meaning their original statement about not having any 4-man teams until the bowl games was wrong, but what I said was they had announced they weren't going to have any 4-man teams until the bowl games, which they had.

2) Regarding Maria Taylor, it was actually NBC Sports Network, not Versus, that did the last MWC baskeball championship this past March (remember Versus became NBC Sports Network on January 2), but did you ever watch one of the NBCSN/ Versus basketball games? It was part of a package called "Mtn. on Versus/ Mtn. on NBC Sports Network." In other words while it aired on Versus/ NBC Sports Network, it was fully programmed by the Mountain West Sports Network, which folded back in May (I think it was May, but it may have been June). All Mtn. employees became free agents at that time, including Maria Taylor. Only a few have been hired else where so far (1 on NBC Sports Network, 1 on CBS Sports Network, 1 moved full-time to BYUtv, and it's believed a few are doing the MWC cable regional broadcasts and the MWC on Root Sports package). In fact this season will be the first time NBC Sports Network airs college basketball under their network banner programmed by NBC Sports with the CAA, Ivy League, and MWC.

Daniel i never sad that my info wasn't flawed, actually Daniel i do know that some old The MTN. sideline reporter are sideline reporters on Professional Baseball and Basketball games on Local tv this year too!!!

ESPN found themselves an excellent new play-by-play announcer in Joe Davis. Davis is making his debut tonight on ESPNU with the Toledo/Arizona game (which is the closest game of the Pacific Coast Prime Time slot of games). Quick research on Davis shows he is just a 24-year-old kid who spent the past 3 years calling AA minor league baseball games. Has a good voice, very good control of the game and shows he is quite knowledgeable and insightful too. Teams up well with Bellotti.

Dave Cuitia is the Rules Expert for College Football  on ESPN this year too!!!

i have 1 final question, since the FOX Saturday College Football Pregame show is scheduled to start at 7 ET and FOX also has a MLB Regular season game at 4 ET for every Saturday in September, does that mean that FOX will move the College Football Pregame show and the actual College Football game to FX if the MLB game goes over it's allotted time or will FOX instead move the MLB game to FX???

DanielOrmsby
DanielOrmsby

@CUbsfan To answer your question, it would solely depend on what is going on with the game on FX at the time. What if the 3:30/ 4 PM game goes into OT? Then a game would still be on FX, and the pre-game show would be delayed.

However the answer should lie within the actual conferences/ leagues TV contracts. The Pac-12 has a TV contract with Fox and FX. The Big 12 has a TV contract with all Fox Networks. Major League Baseball's TV contract is solely with Fox Sports, not FX, not FSN. So it should be the pre-game show and, if necessary, the actual game, moves to FX while baseball continues on FOX.

CUbsfan
CUbsfan

 @DanielOrmsby  @CUbsfan

Daniel okay cool, thanksfor explaining that to me, because i didn't know!!!

I do however know that the FOX Saturday Pregame was on in half of the country at 7:15 ET and the main Basebal game on FOX yesterday didn't end utill around 7:35 ET on most FOX affiiates, meaning that most  FOX afiliates missed the Pregame show and possibly some of the 1st quarter, because they probably didn't start showing the game untill 7:40 ET!!!!

Will the Nevada at California game be seen  on the Pac-12 Networks in Oregon and Washington, now that the Nicholls State at Oregon State game has been postponed th weekend???

DanielOrmsby
DanielOrmsby

@CUbsfan Yes. The back-up was always the main Pac-12 Network feed, which was airing the Nevada/ California game. It should be interesting to see how they break out the games next week at 3 PM- 3 games on Pac-12 Networks, and none of them is a clear favorite for the featured Pac-12 National Network feed. Next week they have Southern Utah at Cal (Pac-12 Bay Area, probably Pac-12 Los Angeles); Sacramento State at Colorado (Pac-12 Rocky Mountain, probably Pac-12 Arizona- Southern Utah fans should be ticked. Because Colorado game is at the same time, they won't be on Pac-12 Rocky Mountain until tape delay broadcast airs later); and Eastern Washington at Washington (Pac-12 Washington and probably Pac-12 Oregon). My guess would be Eastern Washington/ Washington is going to end up the Pac-12 Network game as well.

DanielOrmsby
DanielOrmsby

FYI, for those interested in watching Northwestern State at Texas Tech, the game has been added to the FCS Pacific schedule on Saturday. It will be shown live on FSSW+ (in Texas) , FS Houston+, and FCS Pacific.

For McNeese Staet at Middle Tennessee State, the broadcast team is Chip Walters (play-by-play), Kelly Holcomb (color). Thanks goes to SLC TV (Southland Conference TV Network)  for helping me find that information.

@TroyAppel Read the earlier comments. ESPNMediaZone, who releases all the ESPN play-by-play teams, reports otherwise, and the Ohio and Penn State game notes report otherwise. Do you consider 1 Twitter account to be more accurate than the network airing the game to and the teams playing in it?

@TroyAppel Troy, Please get a life. I don't have any ability to edit the top page. Only the writer of the article has that ability. Now I did send him that update, but what you need to realize is IF IT HAS BEEN NOTED IN THE COMMENTS, THEN IT USUALLY ISN'T CHANGED AT THE TOP! FURTHERMORE, IT USUALLY ISN'T CHANGED AFTER THE ORIGINAL ARTICLE POST HAS BEEN MADE UNLESS IT IS FOR A SIGNIFICANT NUMBER OF CHANGES, NOT JUST ONE! PEOPLE READ THE COMMENTS AND ARE ALREADY AWARE, OR THEY WATCH THE GAME AND ARE AWARE! Pardon that being in caps, but I felt I needed to get that across. Now please stop with the nagging.

DanielOrmsby
DanielOrmsby

@NCAAFB_LikeABos   @BenjaminPGlaser Jemele Hill has been a sports writer since 1996. She has worked with The News & Observer in Raleigh, the Detroit Free Press as the Michigan State sports beat writer, and the Orlando Sentinel. She was hired by ESPN in 2006 and served as a online columnist for sports and a TV contributor on shows like Around the Horn, First Take, Rome is Burning, and ESPN News. She signed a new contract in spring 2012 and was informed they were going to change her from being an online columnist and give her new responsibilities (as well as the occasional online column). This position as a sideline reporter for Friday Night Football on ESPN/ ESPN2 is the first of these changes. It is unknown what other responsibilities they might give her at this time.

the UTSA at South Alabama game has been moved from Thursday to Saturday, The Louisiana Tech Buldogs game has been moved to October 13th and the Oregon State at Nicholls State game that was scheduled for the Pac-12 Network on Saturday afternoon has also been postponed too!!!

DanielOrmsby
DanielOrmsby

@CUbsfan The game was never been at Nicholls State. Nicholls State at Oregon State was postponed this morning because Nicholls State hasn't practiced since August 25 and has been closed all week due to Hurricane Isaac. A December 1 date is being discussed as the make-up date so Oregon State will have a chance at bowl eligibility if Nicholls State doesn't make the FCS Playoffs.

CUbsfan
CUbsfan

 @DanielOrmsby

Daniel  you shouldn't trust this over ESPNmediazone.com and the teams game notes, all that i was getting at, is that the team notes and ESPN Mediazone.com don't always have the broadcasters that they have listed for games!

DanielOrmsby
DanielOrmsby

@CUbsfan ESPNMediazone lists the games that ESPN is producing. It also shows games on ESPN3, but it doesn't list the announcers they they aren't producing them (Utah State and New Mexico State being examples of this). I usually go with the Game Notes over ESPNMediazone because they are updated more frequently.

Sa9273

@CUbsfan  @Sa9273  The assignment usually isn't changed. They just don't call the game. I wouldn't call that losing a broadcaster. It's not like they're dead or anything. They just don't call 1 game.

Kevin Calabro, Adam Archuletta and Yogi Roth as Sideline reporter are flying from the Nothern Colorado at Utah game on Thursday to the San Diego State at Washington game for the PAC-12 network on Saturday,Dave Neal and Andre Ware are flying from the NC State VS Tennessee game on Friday night for ESPNU to the Buffalo at Georgia game for the SEC Network on Saturday morning, Holly Rowe is flying from being the sideline reporter for the  NC State VS Tenessee game for ESPNU on Friday night to the Clemson at Auburn game for ESPN on Saturday night, that Joe Davis will be flying from the Toledo at Arizona game on ESPNU late night Saturday to the Bethune Cookman VS Alabama State game early afternoon Sunday and that Carter Blackburn,Rod Gilmore and sideline reporter Jemele Hill will be flying from the Boise State at Michigan State game Friday night to the Bluegrass Rivalry between Kentucky at Louisville Sunday afternoon!

This means that Joe Davis will be doing PBP for 2 instead of 3 games and that Jay Walker would be an analyst for 1 instead of 2 college football games this weekend!!!

DanielOrmsby
DanielOrmsby

@CUbsfan Joe Davis isn't doing play-by-play on Sunday. Dave Neal is. If you read my earlier comment, you would know there is a large list of changes I sent to Matt Yoder, but instead of reading that, you decided to try and get information correct, only to get it wrong. The following changes are what has taken place.

1) Texas A&M vs. Louisiana Tech has been moved to Oct 13.

2) UTSA at South Alabama has been moved to Saturday at 2 PM. It will still be an ESPN3 exclusive.

3) Announcing assignment updates are as follows:

Thursday

7:30 PM- Massachusetts at Connecticut (Big East Network, ESPN3) Bob Picozzi, David Diaz-Infante

ESPN3 exclusive

7 PM- Southeastern Missouri State at Central Michigan- Dan Gutowsky, Bob Chmiel

Friday

ESPN3 exclusive

8 PM- Wagner at Florida Atlantic- Jarred Schwartz, Forrest Conoly

Saturday

12 PM- Northwestern at Syracuse (ESPN2) Beth Mowins, Joey Galloway, Jenn Brown

12 PM-Western Michigan at Illinois (ESPNU) Anish Shroff, Dan Hawkins

3:30 PM- South Dakota at Montana (Max Media of Montana, KDLT, KOTA 3.2, Big Sky TV) Chris Byers, John Edwards, Shaun Rainey

8 PM- Texas State at Houston (CSS) Matt Stewart, Chuck Oliver, Rachel Baribeau

ESPN3 exclusive

2 PM- UTSA at South Alabama- Jonathan Yadrley, Cole Cubelic

Sunday

12 PM- Bethune-Cooman vs. Alabama State (ESPN) Dave Lamont, Jay Walker, Paul Carcatera

CUbsfan

 @DanielOrmsby

Daniel i would have noticed the changes but i was busy today and didn't have a chance to realize the changes, untill right now!!!!

DanielOrmsby
DanielOrmsby

@CUbsfan Correction t my earlier statement. It's Dave Lamont, not Dave Neal, doing Bethune-Cookman/ Alabama State as shown above in the play-by-play and color assignment updates.

If anybody is interested, the Wyoming at Texas game also had a sideline reporter added.

8 PM- Wyoming at Texas (LHN) Mark Neely, Ray Bentley, Kaylee Hartung

Apparently Kaylee Hartung is Samantha Steele's replacement for Longhorn Network. She will do sideline for all UT on ESPN Network games as well as the pre-game and post-game shows on Longhorn Network.

Daniel i never said that it was easy to compile every televised game and i can only imagine that it normally takes you 12+ hours and all of us here at Awful Announcing appreciate it too!!!

DanielOrmsby
DanielOrmsby

@CUbsfan I never said I was perfect, but all the changes I mentioned were announced before you made your comments on Wednesday. They were after I had compiled information from teams Game Notes on Monday and Tuesday. Now if you want to spend 5 to 6 hours researching and verifying the information before it gets submitted only to have it changed the day before or the day of, then by all means go for it. However I use 3 main sources to get my information, in this order:

1) Team Game Notes- these are usually updated more frequently as changes are made and are usually the most reliable source of information.

2) ESPNMediazone- They aren't supposed to publish the ESPN teams until they are finalized on Wednesday and are usually dead on. It's a bit different during basketball season than football season, but football season usually has a 99.9% accuracy rate.

3) National Football Foundation- They're typically the last group to publish all the announcing assignments,  not doing so typically until Thursday, but because of that they usually get most of the broadcasting changes and they include all the FCS Privately owned games that some teams game notes don't include.

It isn't easy compiling a list of every televised game (thanks to Mattsarz Sports it's easier, but it still takes time), going to each teams Game Notes, using 3 to 4 sources, and then sending it off to be published here. Truth be told, this weeks 6 hours of research was a low week. It's usually a good 12+ hours.

CUbsfan
CUbsfan

 @DanielOrmsby

Ah-ha even you got some broadcasters wrong Daniel, see no one is perfect!!!

The South Dakota Mines aren't new. They are actually the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. I have submitted the missing announcers and the missing ESPNU game to Matt Yoder, with the exception of McNeese State at Middle Tennessee State. He will edit and update this post probably later tonight or tomorrow. If he doesn't get a chance to edit it, then I'll post them tomorrow. If I can catch part of the game MSU/ MTSU game then I'll post the announcers. Apparently it's a Middle Tennessee production, not an ESPN3 production, because ESPNMediaZone said they would list all the announcers for games they produced, and they didn't list announcers for that game.
