i like the dan patrick show, but not for dan patrick. i agree with the poster who said dan can be very espn-ish. he will obsess over the most mundane, inconsequential tidbit of a story. the dannettes are the stars of the show.
espn has become a parody of itself. there is a reason why peter gammons, david aldridge, brian kenny, and others left for the sports specific channels. a-rod's dating life isnt going to be the lead story on the mlb network. but it will a topic of discussion on pti.
I thought Boomer was banned from the masters for antics while broadcasting a few years back.
I may be all alone in this, but I simply don't get all the Gus Johnson love - he's the most artificial, manufactured and rehearsed play-by-play guy I've ever heard. What does everybody hear in him?
@rdmtimp I've grown more and more tired of Gus Johnson as the years have gone on, personally. I think the key word you mention there is "manufactured." To me, it sounds like he really does ramp up his enthusiasm because people expect him to. He does sound real in the big moments of games, but there's no reason for a six-yard run up the middle to cause Gus to shoot his wad.
Meanwhile, the four behind Gus are perfect at knowing when to raise their voice, show inflection and tell you "Hey, this is a big moment you're watching."
I mentioned this on Twitter, but in the same vein as Dan Shulman's relaying of the Osama bin Laden death, Marty Reid deserves an honourable mention for the way he (along with the rest of the ABC crew, can't forget them) handled the Dan Wheldon tragedy in Las Vegas a couple months ago.I actually think Reid would have had a harder time than Shulman because, while both did a great job in relaying the information, Reid and the rest of the ABC team saw it happen before their eyes while Shulman obviously wasn't in the Middle East when bin Laden was killed.Having that image etched in your mind adds a certain reality to any situation, so for Reid, Eddie Cheever and Scott Goodyear to shake off the initial shock of what happened to maintain such a standard of professionalism certainly says a lot about them.Kudos to all three, and especially Reid for making that lasting connection to the tragedy with his final words. It really does help put things in perspective as good-bye really is so final.
@gecarragher Good point about Reid, Cheever and Goodyear witnessing the tragic Dan Wheldon crash in Las Vegas vs. Shulman's announcement of Bin Ladens death. Plus, they had to fill the air with a couple of hours of small talk and entertain the viewers while not knowing if Wheldon was dead or alive. Remarkable job by those 3 guys. Problem is not a lot of guys watch IndyCar.
@HalfFast@gecarragher Agreed. The best job by a broadcast team all year. It wasn't just the announcement they had to make, it was a good two hours of airtime they had to be on the air to do...something. And to do it with such class and dignity, and above all else, keep their composure throughout when it would have been so easy to let emotion take over. And the kicker, the complete silence during the five-lap tribute was absolutely perfect.
A stellar job by those three and by ABC to do everything perfect when they knew the world was watching.
I flip on the DP Show every morning now instead of Sportscenter. Something very refreshing about just having a guy talk sports and do it sanely. It's why I'm tuning into NBC SportsTalk more and more. Just talk, no annoying schticks or skits.
the dp show is great because of dan patrick. it is great because of the danettes. they are hilarious.
dp can get annoying at times as it seems he hasnt left espn. when he will obsess over which athlete is sleeping with which supermodel.
espn is total BS. ive stopped watching as i began to notice their channels are showing less and less sports and focusing on everything else. they have 4 consecutive shows with pompous writers screaming at each other.
