Many sports celebrities are gathering at Lake Tahoe for the yearly American Century Celebrity Golf Championship, which is kinda like The Masters of celebrity golf with the added bonus of getting to see Charles Barkley battle sucktitude for an entire weekend. At Lake Tahoe, NHL on NBC analyst Jeremy Roenick offered one of the soundbytes of the year talking about his favorite NFL team, the New England Patriots and their oft-talked about, work hard/play hard tight end Rob Gronkowski. "I'm a Patriots fan," Roenick told me. "I grew up in Boston. I'm a big Patriots fan, a big Wes Welker fan, a big Tom Brady fan. So, being from that area, the Gronk is the next best thing to Jesus Christ, in my opinion. (Laughs)"
Next best thing to Jesus? Gronkowski isn't even the best tight end in the league -give me Jimmy Graham any day. (Of course I may let my own loyalties dictate that opinion.) Could you imagine if "the Gronk" was around in the days of Christ though? He would have been stoked for Jesus' first miracle. But, in fairness to Jeremy Roenick, Biblical figures like Moses, Elijah, Mary, John the Baptist, Peter, and Paul never caught 3 TDs in a playoff game.
The myth of Gronk as a larger than life figure has taken on a life of its own this Summer with the Body Issue cover and lighting up the ESPYs, so much so that the Patriots have told him to slow down a tad.
As for Jeremy Roenick, I wish he would have the freedom to loosen up like this during NBC's intermission reports more often… ya know, instead of imagining the different ways he could torture Mike Milbury.
