Sadly, you won't be hearing the NBA on NBC theme at the Olympics

Written by Matt Yoder on .

Sports Media Watch reported the unfortunate news last week.  After using the famous John Tesh composition at the 2008 Olympics, NBC will not be bringing back their NBA theme "Roundball Rock" for Olympic basketball coverage from London.  No reason was given for the decision, which will certainly dishearten the masses.  To this day, the NBA on NBC theme stands as one of the greatest in the history of sports.  The Olympic theme certainly has its place amongst the pantheon of great sports themes, but I'm going to miss hearing Roundball Rock this summer.

Really, it's a shame this theme is currently in retirement mode.  If there's any way for NBC to trade Roundball Rock to ESPN for some MLB rights, it'd be a win-win for both networks.  Let's be solutions-oriented, people!

@mareob19 Too much big business to deal with there man. ESPN's version is ok, but it's no Roundball Rock.

I'm SO tired of seeing people fawn over this theme song.  It was a blatant rip-off of the classic 1980's NBA on CBS theme song which was LOADS better......

I really miss that composition too, but at least Nelly used it in his Hearts of a champion song in his Sweatsuit album that he made in 2006, so i can listen to it any time that i want too!

So no i don't think that John Tesh was involved if he let Nelly borrow it for a song!

I wonder if they'd just trade straight-up for the National Hockey Night theme.

This is like when ABC changed the theme for Monday Night Football

Disappointing... I wonder, though, if they'll use their Wimbledon theme?
