Portugal advanced to the knockout round of Euro 2012 with a 2-1 win over the Netherlands on the weekend. Portugese and Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo scored both goals for Portugal in what could be considered a breakthrough performance wearing the national team. Seeing Ronaldo finally come through on the big stage must have been quite the exhilirating experience for the Portugese fans... and broadcasters. Grantland unearthed audio of the home call of Cristiano Ronaldo's 74th minute goal that won the game for Portugal from Nuno Metas and it's everything you would expect and more.
I don't know how or why, but the "more" in this audio clip sure sounds like there are lasers involved. Whether they were dubbed in later by a clever editor, are available for use in the Portugese broadcast booth, or the announcer is actually shooting off a laser in sheer delight, it's clear we've crossed a new frontier in play by play.
Of course! Lasers! That's what all these networks are missing. I can't wait till Joe Buck and Tim McCarver show up with them come October. First, video of the goal, then the outstanding audio clip.
UPDATE: @Pierre_Toronto tells us on Twitter the lasers and other sound effects are indeed part of the Portugese broadcast. That's just incredible.
Charles Barkley said Gobodey Gook on the NBA On TNT Pregame show on Tuesday and ERnie Johnson told him i have no idea what you are talking about, you should show me while we go to break and he said even better i will show you!
Now that the truth is out and most of the people commenting here have been proven correct, I look forward to Matt correcting himself. One last point: That conspiracy about the "My good note for you" is absolutely ridiculous. To me, it is very similar to what Skip Bayless (who I frequently defend on this blog) does.
You never open your mouth until you know what the shot is...
The 56-second clip is so far from the usual "announcer banter" that I don't know what some of the earlier comments were listening to. I "couldn't see" Eagle doing this either, but the clear fact is, he DID do it.
This is an extreme overreaction. I think they are being sarcastic. Ian Eagle is one of the best (if not THE best) in the business. I can't see him doing this.
Anybody who watches the Czar and Ian frequently knows they do this kind of banter all the time.
People need to relax.
@EliGanias Thank you for posting this!
@PackerFan You are wrong and deaf.
@Jodeci23 Hey, what were you saying jackass? Take a look at the article posted above by "EliGanias."
The only one Eagle really called out is people like you who can't understand sarcasm.
