The practice of interviewing coaches during games is a relatively new concept in sports television.  Sure, the halftime interviews are customary in sports like basketball and football.  But, in sports like baseball, hockey, and soccer, coaches are now starting to be interviewed during the action.  Mostly though, these interviews are just as full of cliches and coachspeak than any others.

But then, over the weekend, something interesting finally happened.  As the local Portand Timbers announcing crew was interviewing head coach John Spencer during their MLS tilt with FC Dallas, something surprising happened… a goal!  The reaction from the broadcasters (John Strong and Robbie Earle) and Coach Spencer was as excited and shocked as you would expect.

If anything, perhaps this is an area where MLS could further carve out its niche on NBC Sports Network, where Earle serves as pre-match analyst.  What would stop MLS from regular in-game interviews with coaches to discuss strategy and the way the game is unfolding?  If anything else, maybe we’ll get more great clips with excited English and Scottish accents on display.
