Monday Night Football was off to a normal beginning for the Bears-Cowboys broadcast… until Jon Gruden went totally bonkers talking about the game's two quarterbacks – Jay Cutler and Tony Romo. Of course, this segment was set up by Mike Tirico talking about the much maligned Cutler and the polarizing Romo as just below the ELITE QB LEVEL.
In Jon Gruden's world though, every quarterback except for Akili Smith and maybe Cade McNown are elite. Gruden gushed uncontrollably over Cutler and Romo, and then things got weird. Really weird.
I've said it before, I generally like Gruden as an analyst. But, he's addicted to praising quarterbacks like it's Heisenberg's blue stuff. Maybe that explains Chucky comparing Jay Cutler and Tony Romo to famed actors Clint Eastwood and John Wayne. Gruden pegged Jay Cutler as "The Outlaw" Josey Wales because of his toughness and ability to keep firing. Cutler gets a largely undeserved bad rap from the media and fans, but even the biggest Cutler supporter thinks a Josey Wales comparison is totally random and over the top.
As if that wasn't bad enough, Gruden heaped unconditional praise upon Tony Romo, calling him the most dazzling playmaker in the league and doing everything but polishing his Hall of Fame bust. In fairness, all of Romo's interceptions last night were mildly dazzling and he avoided talking to empty spaces on the bench last night. Naturally, all of this was to the hideously awful and stereotypical "God Bless Texas" soundtrack (you see, because the Cowboys play in Texas!) which Gruden turned to "God Bless Tony Romo." Yipes.
And then things got even weirder with Jon Gruden telling Mike Tirico "make my day" in his best Clint Eastwood voice.
I'd go as far as saying that surpassed any bizarre thing Dennis Miller did in the MNF booth.
