Discouraging news in the wee hours of Sunday morning as one of the top announcers in this or any era was reportedly arrested in Santa Monica on suspicion of DUI Friday night. TMZ broke the story that NBC's Al Michaels failed a field sobriety test after being pulled over and was placed under arrest...
"Al Michaels -- perhaps the most well-known sportscaster in the world -- was arrested Friday night for suspicion of DUI ... TMZ has learned.
Law enforcement sources tell TMZ ... Michaels went through a DUI checkpoint in Santa Monica at approximately 10:00 PM on Friday and when he spoke to officers, they detected an odor of alcohol.
We're told he was pulled over and given a field sobriety and after performing poorly, he was placed under arrest. Michaels was released from jail at 4:15 AM on Saturday on his own recognizance.
According to our sources, Michaels blood alcohol level was right at the legal limit -- he blew a .08 and a .09 in two breathalyzer tests."
Michaels was near the legal limit, so perhaps it's a surprise he would do so poorly on a field test to draw an arrest, but any headline involving a DUI can't be treated flippantly. This is certainly a black eye for Michaels and for NBC. The veteran broadcaster shouldn't have many assigments for NBC until the NFL preseason kicks off in August, so time will tell whether NBC feels the need to discipline Michaels for his arrest. Professional leagues have fallen under scrutiny for their lack of discipline for something as serious as DUI, but what will happen when it's one of the top broadcasters in America? We'll provide any updates if they come along.
UPDATE: Here's more details on the arrest via CNN, including Michaels' court date:
"Sgt. Ryan Gradle said Michaels, the current play-by-play announcer for NBC's "Sunday Night Football," was extremely cooperative and was released on his own recognizance Saturday morning.
Michaels was arrested shortly before 10 p.m., then spent a little more than five hours in the Santa Monica City Jail, the Los Angeles Inmate Information Center said.
He's scheduled to appear at Los Angeles Municipal Court at 8:30 a.m. on June 26."
UPDATE II: And even more details from USA Today from a Santa Monica police officer on what led to Michaels' arrest:
Michaels, play-by-play man on NBC's Sunday Night Football NFL coverage and the broadcaster who proclaimed "Do you believe in miracles?" at the 1980 Winter Olympics, was arrested for driving under the influence at about 9:30 p.m. Friday, according to Sgt. Richard Lewis, public information officer for the Santa Monica Police Department.
"He makes an illegal U-turn in a business district. ... Two motor officers see that. They're staged in a gas station lot. They see the illegal U-turn, and they go after him," Lewis told USA TODAY Sports on Sunday.
"They do a traffic stop. During that stop, they smell alcohol and determine he is under the influence. They do a field sobriety (test) and they arrest him.''
6 Bud Lites will cause you to blow .08. Michaels was not drunk as the article might imply. Not sure what the machine tolerances are.
i have no confidence in any journalistic info from CNN. these people will report anything even if its not true. as for Mr. Michaels he should be more careful about driving while intox. no one should even attempt driving after drinking.
We bagged on Big Al yesterday inTMZ and will say it again here Al you have enough money to call your driver or Network resource center for a ride home dude.
Other than that how was it I am sure the pleasure was all theirs just doing their job and who knows if anything divide total cost by ride = X rides home and that will and should remind you of what you already know We love you Big Al
@awfulannouncing no one missed. You already tweeted it 4 times. Overkill
with all the big problems haunting law enforcement these days...Andy and Barney are draggin a guy to jail who blew a .08. Absof***inglutely ridiculous!!!
To blow an 8 or 9, Al only would have to drink a couple of beers or glasses of wine. No big deal...give him a break. As for those field sobriety tests...some are ridiculous. I recently got stopped and was told to recite the alphabet "backwards". I was later released because I blew a "0".
@ScottWalker6 Time for Oreos!
@ScottWalker6 don't forget about that Lochte fella getting his own show.
Who knew Al was such a light weight?
Never would've happened to Pat Summeral or Dandy Don I'll tell you that much!!
.08, .09 were not illegal until the draconian, federal overlords took all rights away from the states and citizens within. the federal government needs to be demolished. see prohibition, and the war on drugs.... we need a new revolution.. America, as we know it is lost...... sad, very sad...
@gbnational I gave him free eggs at the Edgewater once.
@Zimmsy Well played
@awfulannouncing Do you believe in miracles? YESH! Pass the vodka!
@TheCoeShow3 shocking. Didn't peg him as a boozer
Can't these people afford to call a cab?I'll never understand these millionaire celebrities getting DUIs
Everybody drops the ball once in a while. Im sure he will just get a slap on the wrist for his mistake.
@JakeInWisconsin Too much Audible Ale?
@awfulannouncing if he had made it home, would he walk thru the door and say "do you believe in miracles? Yes!"
Im gonna go ahead and not root for the millionaire who is too stupid to call a cab and avoid putting innocent lives in danger, but thats just me.
@awfulannouncing DO YOU BELIEVE....in taking a cab?
I have two friends who each lost a child to a drunk driver (separate incidents). There is no excuse for driving under the influence. Period. Al should know better. Thank God no one was hurt, but next time may be different.
Lets not jump to any rash conclusions before all of the facts come out. Someone has an extra beer or cocktail with lunch or dinner and on the way home gets trapped in one of these checkpoints.Does not indicate that he has serious issue with alcohol. I see the need for safety but I think we are often to quick to judge and punish after one incideny
@BIGJOEONTHEGO I would assume he is going through a lot with the loss of his good friend Pat Summerall, not an excuse just some insight
@awfulannouncing I would love to see a Bob Costas halftime rant about this.
Anyone who has any familiarity with how DUI arrests go knows that the field sobriety test is just a show; it's solely what you blow in the breathalyzer which determines whether you are arrested.
@swimchic10171 Kathie Lee's gonna a be a little tilted.
Everyone makes a mistake. Thankfully Al's alleged mistake was caught before he perhaps killed someone. Let's hope he gets this under control. He's the best in the business as an announcer, and I'm rooting for him.
@charlesmartin94 were they laced with alcohol?
@Mike_Petry As was yours, sir.
@TrueTitansNews No excuse...I was hit by drunk once...have several friends who have had family killed by drunk drivers...no excuse..
@BIGJOEONTHEGO oh I agree brother, same here, was just stating perspective is all
@TrueTitansNews oh I know...did you see the story about the guy from 3 Doors Down ??
