Just like we all have imagined, Fox has been awarded the rights to broadcast golf's US Open for a period of 12 years starting in 2015 according to a report from Sports Business Journal. The deal with the USGA also includes the US Senior Open, US Women's Open, and the USGA's national amateur championships.
Fox getting into the golf business is an odd, but understandable, course of action. NBC, ESPN, and Golf Channel will lose their rights following next year's Open at Pinehurst. NBC has broadcasted the Open since 1995, and before that, the Open was found on ABC for 30 years.
Pending the details of the deal and assignment of broadcasters, I think this is a huge win for not only Fox, but also for golf fans. CBS, NBC, ESPN, and TNT have largely had a very stale approach to covering tournaments throughout the years, and a fresh broadcaster onto the scene could do a great job at livening things up. All we ask is that Joe Buck and Gus Johnson stay far away from the broadcast. Both have their strengths and weaknesses as broadcasters, but I think either would be a disaster covering golf.
I don't agree at all with the stale comment. NBC does have the weakest coverage and I'm not really sorry to see them go, even if I'm not enamored with the prospect of Fox-ized golf. We'll see. But ESPN/ABC is solid when Tirico is running the show and not Berman, while I think CBS golf is some of the most solid sports coverage on all of TV. It's even worth watching blowouts, because that's when Feherty and McCord get silly.
Great. I can't wait to hear the FOX NFL music (which has become the FOX Everything music) after coming back from a commercial break. smh.
Knowing Fox here is the likely, slated golf crew for the PGA on Fox...
Studio: Kurt Menefee
Tower: Joe Buck and John Daly
Course Reporters: Dick Stockton, Pam Oliver, Erin Andrews and Tony Siragusa
I for one think Fox is going to try and be to outside the box for the average golf fans tastes. Fox doing golf has me real nervous.
And hey, nothing says golf like the NFL on Fox them...
If it keeps us from listening to Chris Berman cover golf, I'm all for it. Now if CBS could get all 4 days of the Masters.......
People had similar questions when Fox outbid CBS for the NFC. They signed Summerall and Madden and have been covering the games for nearly two decades now.
You know darn well they're going to put Buck high above 18. My memory may be failing me, but I'm pretty sure I remember Joe announcing some golf tournament in the network's early days in sports. Heck, he hosted a freaking fishing championship!
@JohnLammTX Tirico is only solid when it comes to aggrandizing the mother ship. Oh, and congratulating the competitors for playing in an event televised by said network.
@CKintheMJ They work for CBS. They have never covered the US Open.
@JimWilliamsOnTheAir JImwilliamsonair Joe Buck even hosted Horse Races on FOX for the 3 years in the late 90's that FOX aired Horse Racing! and the 1st Cotton Bowl Classic on FOX in 1999!!!
