Curt Menefee was the first personality to greet viewers on FS1
Below is the video of Speed's final moment and the first 20 seconds of FS1 as seen via a DirecTV subscriber. I'll go into more detail on the transition below.
I wasn't really planning on taking in the launch of FS1 but then again it wasn't really ruled out as a possibility. I'm on the West Coast and 3am on Friday/Saturday for me is somewhat business as usual.
The somewhat unexpected thing is that I went out with a friend for drinks earlier and she's worked for 5 years in the motorcycle track days and racing business. I asked her what channel was key to following that sport and she went on to talk about how awesome Speed is. I crushed her spirits telling her what was only a couple hours away. Not really being familiar with Speed or personally knowing anyone who was a regular viewer, I hadn't really put much thought into the unfortunate transition for them until tonight.
I was curious as to how technically the change would happen. It was being communicated that FS1 would be channel 219, but MAVTV was already parked there. Speed was in the 600's and hunting down some tweets from DTV, the explanation is that everything would magically just work at the stroke of 3am.
And it did.
I dvr'd MAVTV and the recording basically stayed with the channel as it moved from 219 to 214 The channels in between didn't even feel a thing!. And with that, I'll probably never watch or talk about MAVTV in my life again.
DVRing Speed magically migrated the recording to FS1 but then my DVR, clearly flummoxed by this shell game cut off the recording.
When the smoke cleared FS1 was on 219 at 3am, Speed signed off at 3am, the program guide updated, the channels moved (no idea where Fuel/FS2 is or if I get it), and now there is another channel that is in the rotation. How much love it will get and how this changes the sports media landscape remains to be seen but 30 minutes into the launch nothing has gone wrong and ESPN has shockingly not submitted their unconditional surrender.
Cheers to the folks at Fox. Welcome and please don't suck.
Where the Hell is SPEED? This so-called Sports Channel! Foreign Soccer & International Tidly-Wink T ornament? This is BAD. I already have ESPN and ESPN2. I Paid my TV service provider for a Racing Channel that features NASCAR and we get THIS? Then there is Regis Philbin, a morning talk show host flunkie, NOW claims to be a Sports Expert on this FS1 Channel! Ha, HA!
fox sports needs to go to a different channel .bring back speed for the auto sports fans I live for auto sports .then you let fox move in.for what more money in your pockets.you just stuck a fork in the auto sports.and sponsers for auto sports FOX SPORTS 1 SUCKS .
Bring Speed back NOW !!!!! Bean counters need to recount. Nobody called me to ask what i thought, how about you . So i guess it's here lets shove this up your a$$ and see what happens. MORONS! Hey espn Here's a chance to do right!
FOX, CAN KISS MY A_S !!!!!! THIS IS BY FAR THE DUMBEST MOVE I HAVE EVER SEEN, I USED TO WATCH FOX, BUT NOT ANYMORE, I'LL WATCH PBS, THE FOOD NETWORK OR SOMETHING, ANYTHING. JUST GOES TO SHOW HOW, OUT OF TOUCH, THE NETWORKS ARE WITH THE GENERAL PUBLIC! MAYBE SPIKE WILL BE SMART ENOUGH TO PICKUP THESE SHOWS AND MILLIONS OF VIEWERS.
on second thought, i'll just blame it on TV in general. i submit that the internet is where the future of motorsports programing is.
why does FOX think that racing/car fans will watch main stream sports that are already available on too many other channels? FOX, i will follow my Rolex Racing on the internet and un-include your new mistake thank you for nothing.
Too late FS1 Sucks, just no easy way to say it, They took away all racing and replaced it with Athletic sports, stuff you can see on ESPN and Fox Sports. Why would you get rid of something millions of fans watched and replace it with something you can get on 20 other channels?
ESPN needs to make an all motorsports channel and shove it back in Foxes face.Fox pissed alot of people off!
Speed drove away all it's core viewers when it went to all NASCAR all the time. It used to be the place to see all sorts of racing, towards the end, it was 90% NASCAR and 10% other. Yeah, you could still see MotoGP, but little else. Was never a Pinks fan. I quit watching SPEED a year ago. So did most other people unless they were NASCAR fans. See ya SPEED.
My husband and I have been race fans since we were children (a long time ago). Whether it is NASCAR, Formula 1, Indy, NHRA, GrandAm, Supercross, or World Rally, we enjoy it all. The variety of programming that was offered on Speed was found on no other network. Now I find that Speedvision/Speed Channel has been removed and replaced with Fox Sports 1. While I enjoy watching NFL, MLS, and NHL programming, there are multiple network and cable channels that devote extensive coverage to these and other sports. What had been lacking, particularly in the New York Metro area, was dedicated and comprehensive motorsports coverage. Speed filled that niche. Now what?
I am a racing fan. Not a football fan not a basketball fan... I love drag racing, NASCAR, Indi cars you name it.. Man against Machine.. What the hell is wrong with you people.... I am going to see if I can't get NASCAR friends and family to Boycott fox and any of their holdings. If SPEED Channel is not back before I go to Dover In September I will see how many of them we can get to BOYCOTT Fox... We will be at trackside with banners asking any and all NASCAR, Past time, Pinks all out, Wind tunnel, Lucas on the Edge and Speed channel fans to help me in this venture till you bring back our SPEED Channel...
you suck bring speed back, fox u a bunch asshole!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
you know i am fricking tired of this bull shit, you remove speed channel for the guys and girls that like racing an gearz or hot rod, to put this bull shit of football, and other crap, that a lot of us dont care about, but yet you still have your head up your ass and screw the people that watch your dam shows on pass time hot rod gearz and other motor sports and not that dam nascar which sucks any way, I drive a dam buss in a circle all dam day long, and i dont see you making a show about that, like that stupid NASCAR shit
Damn Rupert can not do any thing right BRING BACK SPEED there in more to motor sports than NASCAR and just pure race day coverage and then all the other stick and ball sports talking heads might as well be ESPN I guess if you can not do it right just copy someone else
I WOULD LIKE TO SEE A NATIONAL BOYCOTT OF ALL FOX STATIONS INCLUDING THEIR LOCAL AFFILIATES UNTILL WE GET SPEED BACK I KNOW I WILL
I saw the closing of Speed Channel to FS1 I got up just in time to see it didn't have any plans on doing that just happen that way LOL. Went back to bed after that pus I have the TV on all night can't sleep without the TV on.
I DVR'd the switchover from my Comcast system. Interesting thing, the first 30 or 60 seconds or so were actually the alternate Speed channel (the one without the FOX branding, I think it might the same one shown in Canada) showing Top 10 finishes before it cut to FS1 already in progress.
I am upset because it's not on Cox Cable it said it would be on Channel 31 which is currently TruTV...
Too much MMA coverage and racing so far on the main channel. And a 1 hour live nightcap show and one hour NFL show at 6pm east each day. Thats it? More daily coverage of other sports news would be nice and it must be hard not to be too repetitive like Bristol. Even with all this, its FOX which is a more familiar brand with viewers and have higher ratings than NBCSN or CBSSN.
I'm liking the channel so far, especially interested in the UFC card tonight and the debut of fox sports live. My only problem is that most of the morning will be nascar and truck racing programming which I find unwatchable. Race car drivers aren't athletes no matter how hard you shove it down peoples throats.
I'll check out the stations studio shows and its UFC programming for now, but when college football starts is when I'll really start paying attention to the station.
My 2 Early FS1 takes, the plan for split screen commercials during live shows apparently didn't happen, and I get the App is delayed, but no live internet stream is weak. Now back to EPL on NBCSN and their App and streaming,or the Solheim Cup on an App and a stream
No idea what is going on in Canada. Speed still exists here this morning, showing programming from 5 years ago (Pinks, Dangerous Drives) that doesn't match what is shown in the digital program guide on my cable provider. Like your motorcycle racing friend, the loss of Speed in favor of UFC and other Fox garbage is a bad thing for folks like us, despite all the sugar-coating they try to give it. I understand why Fox wanted to have a network like FS1, but it seems a shame they had to kill Speed to achieve that. I have to wonder how Mike Joy really feels. He has been promoting FS1 on Twitter for a while and trying to reassure fans, but the reality is most of what they carried will never be seen again. Maybe he, like me, was secretly glad to see a lot of the produced reality junk Speed began carrying a few years ago disappear. I's a shame they went down that hole instead of concentrating more on the things the channel originally aired, which were more faithful to the mission of the channel and more appealing to motorsports fans and gearheads generally.
@bear65va Little exaggeration with the percentages there bear, try using some facts before you post. Out of all of the programming the Speed channel offered NASCAR used 15% of the scheduled airtime.
I was actually somewhere between 2 and 3 minutes that I got the alternate Speed channel.
@Von hugen dong Of course racers are athletes. You try doing what these people do and see how well you last for 500 miles. I would rather watch racing than the street fighting known as UFC, which one could probably argue ought be illegal.
@Von hugen dong evidently a large enough group of people want to watch it
@gregbeaulieu All the racing stuff is on FS2 now.
@gregbeaulieu @Von hugen dong If you can enjoy car/truck racing than good for you. I still would rather not watch it, and think it would have been better if they kept speed and kept that programming in that spot.
As for race car drivers being athletes, no. Just no. I'm not delusional in thinking i'm some great athlete and can do what baseball players, football players, Golfers, etc do. But I don't think driving a car/truck would be all that difficult.
@Von hugen dong seriously? you mention baseball, football, then GOLF? lololololol Golf? then you have the nuts to say a driver isn't an athlete? thanks for the insight into how your brain works, but I could have done without it.
@Von hugen dong @gregbeaulieu Von hugen, you obviously don't follow ANY kind of motor sport, all motor sports take a lot of physical endurance to COMPLETE what ever challenge they are faced with, sure anyone can drive a car or ride a motorcycle, pilot a boat but not just anyone can finish the courses and take the beating that these ATHLETES do to be competitive. A lot of the motor sport athletes need more intensive physical workouts than baseball or basketball players just to be able to be competitive in their respectful sport.
So, keep in mind that is your opinion, which everyone has a right to but yours is obviously not based on facts when it comes to motor sports.
@Von hugen dong @gregbeaulieu
Driving a car/truck is not difficult. Competitive racing is a completely different sport which at this time, you clearly do not understand.
