Al Trautwig forgets what network he works for

Written by Matt Yoder on .

This weekend, NBC aired coverage of the 2013 American Cup gymnastics.  Announcer Al Trautwig has been the voice of NBC's gymnastics coverage for well over a decade, but for some reason he signed off the air for ABC Sports!  D'oh!  At least he barely caught the blooper in time to slide a panicked "NBC" in there.

I could understand Trautwig signing off for MSG since he actually works there in addition to NBC... but ABC hasn't even had its own branded sports division since it was changed to "ESPN on ABC" several years ago.  I'm sure nostaligc fans of the Wide World of Sports appreciated the shoutout though.

The network had better gymnastics coverage when John Tesh did the Summer Olympics in Barcelona and Atlanta.

He's worked at all kinds of networks and did Olympics coverage at ABC, although they haven't done the games since February of 1988. He's only off by one letter, anyway.

Surprised it doesn't happen more often. He worked for ABC for years and signed off a zillion shows that way. For freelancers, this is one of the recurring nightmares - like the one in which you realize you're not on the air...about 30 seconds after you should've been. Everyone has those, right? Anyone?

Funny on two levels. He had a brain fart and ABC Sports probably hasn't existed in a decade since its the ESPN logo splashed all over sports when they air on ABC.
