Bob Knight is totally confused by this shot clock contraption

Written by Matt Yoder on .

Bob Knight announced a Kentucky game tonight for ESPN at Vanderbilt and actually played nice with John Calipari and Big Blue Nation.  Perhaps that effort to be kind affected his mental equilibrium, because he was out to lunch for this game ending situation.

Kentucky freshman Nerlens Noel made a controversial basket where there should have been a shot clock violation in the last minute.  The replay clearly showed a 0 on the shot clock with 18 seconds left in the game and the ball in Noel's hand.  During the replay, Knight speaks about "a different zero" and says about the shot and game clocks, "I don't know what that meant."  Rece Davis has to talk him through the difference between the shot clock and game clock like you would to someone who hadn't seen a basketball game since they had to climb ladders to retrieve the ball from a peach basket.  (Thanks to Cork Gaines for the video.)

That was a sequence Yankees announcer John Sterling would be proud of.  How would any basketball analyst, let alone a man who won over 900 college basketball games and 3 national titles as a Hall of Fame coach, not know the difference between the shot and game clock?  I've rarely seen an announcer blank on something so elementary.

I dont feel sorry for him.  Lived a great life, great coach and has produced 100 times more quality humans than both the two fools coaching that game did.

Bob knight is the man.

I always said it very simply.

If you had a  daughter, who would you want knocking at your door to take her out?  A Bobby Knight coached young man or a John Calipari punk.

Not that bad actually, as he was just confused by the weird placement of the clock. That being said Booby Knight is a blowhard who loves to tell anyone who will listen how smart he is and how stupid everyone else is, so....Light Him Up!!!

Knight spoke to actual happenings around him. He seemed clear and precise. Who is this idiot saying he was shaky and not right? Jesus.

I hope for your sake it was just confusion and not a medical reason for his lapse otherwise you come off  looking a lot worse than Knight.

I hate Bob Knight and love any chance to laugh at him as the blustering idiot he is.

Having said that, I think his confusion was over the incredibly unusual clock placement in Vandy's gym. The game clock in that position truly does look like a shot clock, leaving the shot clock to just look strange. If Vandy would put their clocks where every other gym/arena in the United States does, perhaps this confusion (and the missed call) may not have happened.

But hey, they brag about using the weird design - with the raised floor and benches at the endzones - to their advantage, so if it hurts them from time to time, tough luck.

The General is getting old. Give him a little slack -- yeah, he should know better, and it was weird as hell listening to him stumble on live tv, but clearly time is taking its toll on him. I feel sorry for him.
