Shannon Sharpe Calls Out Bill Belichick for Declining Post-Game Interview With CBS
Written by Brad Gagnon on .
Bill Belichick declined to speak to CBS after his team lost Sunday night's AFC Championship Game to the Baltimore Ravens, and Shannon Sharpe wasn't going to let the notorious poor loser get away with it.
I know Belichick doesn't say much at all when he's interviewed and thus we probably didn't miss much, but that's not the point. All he had to do was stand there and indulge Steve Tasker by shaking his head for 30 seconds and dishing some go-to clichés. This is about the principle. Every other coach sucks it up and answers a question or two after losing, but Belichick apparently thinks he's above doing so.
People like Belichick have to be reminded that they've become rich and famous because of networks like CBS, which pay the NFL billions of dollars a year to bring these productions to football-hungry fans. The media represents those fans, and so when Belichick refuses to answer a question or two, he's basically spitting in the faces of those who pay his salary.
Thanks to Shannon Sharpe for saying what should have been said a long time ago. The inability to be gracious is defeat is a character flaw!

Loved @shannonsharpe 's comments about Bill Belichick's post game snub. Shannon's right.. Talking only when it goes your way? Smh #Patriots

And he's right. RT @anishespn: Shannon Sharpe coming strong at Belichick

Update: It should be noted that Jim Harbaugh also bailed on his post game interview. Below is a reaction from Fox via Richard Deitsch. Harbaugh flaking is odd considering his team won their game, thus giving him a different motivation for not doing the interview.
Fox Sports on why Niners coach Jim Harbaugh did not speak with them after Falcons-Niners game: "We don't know. It's frustrating."

This is a ridiculous story. The only people that sound like babies are those that are complaining about it. The media needs to stop turning their backs on people when they don't get there way. Everyone knows his personality, so when he directs his frustration at you, don't be surprised. CBS seems like the spoiled brats to me.
This is a non-story. Has Belichik ever answered post-game questions after a loss? And as you point out, who cares what he says since he never says anything anyway. Wouldn't even be on the radar except Sharpe has a loud mouth. If you throw Belichik under the bus for this you have to start a LONG list of others that do the same thing.
I have nothing for the Patriots. Tom Brady disrespected the National Anthem before the game, and the fans after the game. In my home town, not respecting the National Anthem (hat off, face the flag, right hand over your heart) will get you your ass kicked, and rightfully so.
@RaymondMeyers I understand where you're coming from, as a Patriot, he should show patriotism, but you're overreacting
I'm not a fan of Bill but maybe Belichick believes like I do that sideline reporters are useless.
Typical of Belichick/Pats. Remember Brady's supermodel wife bad-mouthing receivers after poor throws - was it last year? Wonder what she's saying after his interceptions yesterday? Was T.B. aiming for the manlihood of defender in that slide? HMMMM? Too bad there was no flag! I'm a Broncos girl, still depressed that we let
the Ravens run over us, but they might as well take it all the way - they deserve it! Mrs. S.
@Rocky Mtn Mamma I feel bad for Bronco fans. That was a very tough game to lose especially after winning so many games in a row. It's sad that Payton Manning no longer has the comeback magic that he once had. He had a good run though. Who ever though his kid brother Eli would end-up with more Super Bowl rings than Payton. At least Payton does better commercials though. Maybe Denver can get Tebow back.
@HalfFast Still laughing about your 'Tebow' remark. Teams have bad games (just like the one the Pats just had) Peyton is fine and you'll see the Broncos back in it next year. As for Tebow, he's a good man, but I'm pretty sure the bloom is off the rose of his football career. Rocky Mtn Mamma
The Patriot's,like all of us, see the sand running out of the hourglass.
I hate to say this but although Tom Brady is one of the 'all time greats',statistically had a great year;I have felt he has peaked. Winning during the season is clearly important BUT,the playoffs require 'something' other than skill.
The defense has had it's issues and it's huge when you use a starting DB but Moss was fired 5 years ago,a HUGE error....clashed with Bill's 'way of doing things'. Gronkowski has been hurt the past 2 postseasons, not good, and Welker,as great as he is,is hoping for a long term contract that Bill won't want to commit to.
It's always sad see the 'greats' starting to slip but baby faced Tom is on the decline, and Belicheck is approaching 60.
I don't want to make a blanket stereotypical generalization about the Pats BUT they have seen the glory and as 'time waits for no man'.....it won't wait for this great team.
It does not mean anything. No coach owes an announcer or tv reporter anything. If not for Football you wouldn't have a job. It's mean spirited and self-serving to ask the same questions to the team that has just lost. Focus on the team that won and let the team that lost alone.
@TigerGeek you sound like a new england sour loser. admit the
better tean won and the chump coach of the new england team cryed.
Yes Belichick is an arrogant POS but can we all agree that the CBS NFL Today is the worst of all of the NFL shows?
@memoseley21 Agree 100% - I can't understand Shannon Sharpe. He talks like he has a mouthful of marbles. Frustrating!
Just seeing Bellychick and Brady pouting is good enough for me. It's wicked hillarious!
Thank you Mr. Sharpe for your candor. More of it is needed in sports. As for Mr. Belichick, he continues to show just how infantile he is, that wining is everything or as Mr. Brady yells at his teammates, "we gotta be perfect." These guys are not sportsmen; they're narcissists who love wining more than decency; I'm glad they lost to the better team Baltimore Ravens. Flacco outgunned Brady and deserves to go to the Superbowl, not Brady and surely not Belichick. I'm picking Baltimore over San Fran. Should be a great game :)
Sharpe is right on target and it's long overdue. Too bad he didn't include the other poor loser, Mr Manning.
@pross705 Really - Manning? What, because he didn't give an interview? He's one of the classiest guys int he game!
@Rocky Mtn Mamma @pross705 Manning is a notorious sore loser, always has been.. After losses, consistently walks off the field pouting, refusing to shake hands. It's well documented
@pross705 @Rocky Mtn Mamma So, wait, your well-documented proof all refers to the same game, and two of them are fan blogs?
You're right, well-documented indeed!
@GregC @Rocky Mtn Mamma If you haven't seen him be so, you haven't been watching him closely.

Just a sample of them, he did the same thing after the loss to the Raven's storming off the field. All you have to do is watch him after a loss, any loss......Sore Loser
@pross705 @Rocky Mtn Mamma Well documented? Like when Manning stuck around last week with his family, after everyone had left, just to personally talk to Ray Lewis, shake his hand, and wish him luck?
Or how Manning writes handwritten notes to every player when they retire, including Patriots players who helped deny him a Super Bowl win for oh-so-long?
Manning has never shirked a post-game interview, he's never ducked a question, he's never missed a media session. I don't remember one time Manning missed a "post-game handshake", either.
But it's well-documented, so I'm sure you can support your baseless, whacky opinion with some facts. RIght?

@Kyng I can see the coach breeds fans with similar personality traits, LOL. Seeing the pouting New England fans getting all red in the face is "wicked hilarious!".
I will give Belichick credit for having a conversation with the winning coach on the field after the game instead of his usual drive-by flesh touch. They seemed to be truly connected.
It is way past time that somebody called out Belijerk! Thank you, Shannon Sharpe, for having the courage to call it what it is. And he's absolutely right about the fact that this simply gives people like me even more reason to hate the Patriots. And I do.
I blame the NFL, and the media for Bill's unsportmanship. They have put him up on the peddle stool as being the greatest coach ever. Really? Did anyone forget SPYGATE? He got a pass from the media and the league when he was caught cheating. The fact remains that since the SPYGATE allegations came out, the Patriots have not won another superbowl. Make you wonder that perhaps there should be an asterisk to the three superbowls that they won. They can't win now, because they don't know the other teams plays. Big cheaters.
No one's forgotten "Spygate". If you think the Patriots haven't won a Super Bowl since Spygate BECAUSE of Spygate, you're either nuts or you don't understand football as much as you think you do...or both.
I can't stand the Patriots, and it's always sweet to watch them lose in embarrassing fashion, and watch the defeated looks of Brady (whom I actually admire as a QB) and Belichick.
But they are a dominant team every year, and the fact that they keep meeting their match in the playoffs has nothing to do with Spygate! That's just ludicrous. If Spygate mattered so much, they wouldn't be winning as many games as they do.
The guy who thinks he is entititled is Shannon Sharpe. Networks like CBS wouldn't have anything to broadcast if people like Belichick didn't put a product on the field worth watching. Then he wouldnt make the handsome pay check he makes. Geez give the man a break.
What do you guys expect? We've given Bill Belichick, through our zeal to be winners, carte blanche to display his arrogance, in our faces. After the slap on the wrist behind the stealing signs incident he could probably care less what we think! Shannon is right, but do you think it really matters? This lesson is going in one ear and out the other.
While we are discussing announcing ,someone should tell Jim Nantz that it was Franco Harris that intercepted the ball that Jack Tatum deflected ,not Frenchy Fuqua
No, no, no, no, no. The pass was deflected off of Frenchy...or Tatum, depending on your point of view. Nantz was talking about the deflection, not the reception.
FOX had all of it's studio crew live at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta for their coverage of the NFC Championship game between the San Francisco 49ers at Atlanta Falcons this year, like they do every year too!!!
Curt Menefee today on the FOX NFC Championship Postgame show said that Jim Harbaugh didn't talk to FOX last year when the San Francisco 49ers lost the NFC Championship game to the N.Y. Giants in Overtime and this year when the San Francisco 49ers beat the Atlanta Falcons in the NFC Championship game, so at least he is consistent!!!
Right, and that's the difference. Belichick is quick to talk to the network guys when the Patriots win, but when they lose, he sulks and refuses.
sharp should keep his big horse mouth shut some people dont talk enough maybe but i respect that person more than the person that just keeps their mouth shut instead of running off and saying something during heated moments sharp needs a briddle on that big horse head with a big metal bit giddy up sharp yee haa
Yeah, royalpines2215, you can insult the guy personally if that makes you feel superior, or whatever it is you want to feel. But the fact remains Sharpe is right. Nobody likes losing, but you have to be gracious and if nothing else, just say something like, "It was a toough loss and we wish it had gone our way." Belichick was too busy sulking, not just choosing to be silent. There's a difference.
@royalpines2215 if this was the first time this happened I would agree with you but it's not. Actions like that are bad for sports and the role models out there. Brady is class and always is there win or lose as is most of the Pats. It's bad all round and classless when it happens over and over. I am by no means a bit Peyton fan, but what he did after last weeks loss was epic. Finished all questions and when there were no more he went straight to Lewis for a congrats and goodbye....
Bellicheat is a loser. He can't win the big one now that he can't cheat so he whines, and thumbs his nose at people like Shannon who is right on target with his criticism.
My hunger for post game throw away questions and cliché answers was not satiated!
