ESPN's Bill Simmons has been busy over the last nine months focusing on the NBA season, so he might be forgiven if he hasn't been following the tennis world. With Wimbledon in the midst of a no-name Ladies Semifinals (Marion Bartoli, Kirsten Flipkens, Sabine Lisicki and Agnieskza Radwanska), Simmons thought he would be cute by giving a slight shot to NBC on how it would promote Saturday's Wimbledon Ladies Final.
However, NBC was quick to point out that it no longer carries Wimbledon.
The final is on ESPN. RT @BillSimmons "Radwanska! Bartoli!!!!! It's the Wimbledon Women's Finals on NBC!"— NBC Sports (@NBCSports) July 2, 2013
It would be one thing if Simmons did this last year when it marked the first year ESPN televising the entire Wimbledon tournament, but this is Year Two of the Worldwide Leader's long-term contract. Someone in Bristol needs to give the ol' Boston Sports Guy the memo about Wimby on ESPN.
UPDATE: Simmons has acknowledged that he made a mistake.
still wasn't his point to take a shot at nbc and I wouldn't exactly call this the "takedown of all takedowns". Just funny to see every media outlet go crazy over everything one guy says.
Yeah, I mean, it's funny that NBC Sports responded to his joke, but it's pretty clearly the same NBA on NBC joke he always makes with sub-superstars; he obviously didn't mean it literally.
You guys are idiots. It's a reference to the way NBC used to advertise 90's NBA playoffs, which he compliments all the time. He uses this joke for anything that doesn't have marquee names. Has nothing to do with who is actually televising wimbeldon and isn't a shot at NBC
