Thanks to 106.1 The Ticket in New Orleans, we now have full audio of the embarrassing and shameful attempt at a joke that was aired on Atlanta sports radio station 790 The Zone this morning. The segment mocked Steve Gleason, who was a safety for the Saints but now suffers from ALS.
Gleason can no longer eat, speak or walk on his own, and that was apparently enough for the guys at "Mayhem in the AM" to run with. Who in their right mind would find this funny, let alone appropriate? Those involved have been suspended, and that might only be the tip of the iceberg now that we have the despicable audio.
UPDATE: All three hosts have been fired, per The Zone.
The transcript of the fake knock-knock jokes "Gleason" told during the interview:
Gleason: Knock, knock.
Host: Steve, we do knock-knocks on Thursdays. We don't do it on Mondays.
Gleason: I may not be here on Thursday.
Gleason: Knock, knock.
Host: Who's here?
Host: I who?
Gleason: I blame Gregg Williams.
Gleason: Knock, knock.
Host: Who's there?
Host: Smother who?
Gleason: Smother me. Do me a favor.
Gleason: Knock, knock.
Host: Who's there, Steve?
Host: I'm who?
Gleason: I'm going to hell
Host: Yes you are.
Losers......they are out of radio and are a real embarrasment to their families or any media organizations that would employ them......They can say sorry but behavior like that is who they are.....
wwelll maybe they learned alesson. I pray they did. NOW I am sure they asked forgiveness. We all can let it go and let GOD deal with them. We cannot be judge and jury in the end if they do not repant, GOD WILL DEAL WITH IT.
The tragedy in all of this and the real reason for the uproar is that the jokes were not even funny. Has anyone ever gotten fired for doing a Stephen Hawking joke? Why not?
I think the punishment for these guys were warranted and even if they were joking it was a miserable attempt to be funny. I think a lot of people try to reach with their idea of a joke and it gets them in trouble sometimes because they don't think before they speak. It's happened time and time again and unfortunately this won't be the last time we hear about someone opening their mouth and inserting their foot.
The only person who's opinion really matters in this situation has spoken
All three hosts have apologized on Twitter and personally to the Team Gleason foundation, as Gleason himself wrote on Facebook.
"Received and accepted," he wrote. "We have all made mistakes in this life. How we learn from our mistakes is the measure of who we are."
Since the story broke, Gleason said, there's been a lot of talk about ALS, an ailment he characterizes as being "not (well) understood ... and largely ignored." Hopefully, this unintentional uproar will help change that, he said.
this is a gross explicative of people who do not respect the lives of others and the devastating things people deal w/in real life. Maybe these people do not or did not experience devastation and suffering in their lives. Banning them from further employment and public service is minimal; however, it may humble them if they have to face some financial demise. I do believe, however, that the entire station should be commanded to undergo some counseling and community service that deals with those who are "less fortunate" and face challenges with dignity and fight for their life. I pray for the families who deal with such devastating illnesses... I am so sorry for the lack of respect via the station and employees.
id date him I can see why nobody can take a joke we live in a world where making fun you can look at me and see is a privilege...it means they like you
that program is a show of just how low some people will stoop to belittle a person. Anybody who could find humor in the belittling of a person with a handicap is truly as sick as the people who did the sketch. I agree 100% with the station owners and all the big wigs who made the call to fire the cast and I commend them on their assertiveness in the actions they took. My heart goes out to all the men and women who suffer from any illness or disability that renders them in a situation such as ALS.
well folks, I can tell this
is not the place for intelligent dialogue. You guys seem to just want
to hurl insults at anyone who disagrees with you. Condemning me to hell makes me think you'd be right at
home in Iran or Afghanistan or Germany in the 1930s... I however am out of here. That's all, folks!
I hope these guys never work again. My dad died from ALS and my husbands uncle has just been diagnosed with it. This is not something to joke about. THIS IS DISGUSTING!!!
My father died from ALS. This is disgusting. The world will be better if they never see airtime again.
I hope these 3 POS's never get a job again, especially in Atlanta. Let them go to some two bit market and do the graveyard shift.
this is most unsettling ... i am a nurse and i have clients who have had ALS .. im am sickened by this truly.. i am very glad the host were fired.. they should be charged .. if you have never known someone personally who has this disease you will never understand what they and their families go thru. Its very sad .. they loose control of everything in their bodies except their minds .. they are trapped inside until they can no longer fight .. its not pleasant by any means to watch someone suffer with this.. i found absolutely no humor in this .. you should really be ashamed of yourselves ... and you should be charged with slander ... karma will find you ..
Where is the humor in this??? Boy, they must have totally run out of material. And now they've run out of air. Good riddance. They should take a walk through a hospital unit of group home where ALS patients are cared for.

Listening to that made me sick to my stomach. I hope none of them ever have to experience first hand what it's like to have this disease or watch a loved one suffer with it.
God help you guys....by the grace of God neither you nor any of your family have obviously been afflicted with a serious health issue....but it's early...better get to church you assholes.
@Geoff Z Really? You had to explain this to these people? Gleason himself forgave these people and none of you can? I don't understand why people need something to complain about ALL THE FUCKING TIME! None of you know Gleason and probably more than half of you don't know anybody with ALS so why are you mad? Get off the internet...go outside and find something to enjoy.
@JulieeAndie low self esteem desperate girls will date anybody
@JulieeAndie dying is no joke, especially when it robs you piece by piece of every part of your being....have you ever held your breath to the point you pass out.....try it, and then maybe you can appreciate the suffering and the mercy of others
@JulieeAndie are you serious? you are sick
@locohoya that was very intelligent and helpful
You also said that you were done commenting after you made your first profound comment, you should have stuck with that.
If you're looking for intelligent dialogue you need to provide half of it. You presented invalid points that were easily picked apart and then you had nothing else.
@tippi_72 I am so sorry for your family. This is such a debilitating disease & there are no words to console. It must be aweful to know that you are dying, piece by piece, and not have any way to help yourself. I hope for comfort and the least of suffering for your family member...comfort measures are probably the best that can be given.
@StaceyKeck I am a trauma nurse, Stacey...so I understand the thoughts you have. I have, however, never dealt w/an ALS patient....I cannot imagine. It makes me sick to know that these people lose everything, except their minds & know they are unable to help themselves. I say, just give them comfort measures to help ease their suffering.....
So your church is cool with you casting judgement and calling people assholes. I'm pretty sure that's the exact opposite of what jesus would do.
@ninahcwel: God is an imaginary friend for grown ups.
@Jackiesaurus Rex @Geoff Z@Jackiesaurus Rex @Geoff Z Yes, I know Gleason and I have lost 8 family members to hereditary ALS and I find it completely offensive. The smothering comment especially. Do you even have a clue what this disease is or how insensitive those comments are? By the way, I also have ALS. So yeah, I WILL complain and I'm glad they lost their jobs. They are all real jack asses. We, the ALS community "complain" because we refuse to lose our voices to idiotic people like this. We would get off the internet, but unfortunately, with people with ALS, this is how we communicate. EDUCATE YOURSELF before you think we are complaining. Indecent human beings and disgraceful to make fun of disabled people. Makes me sick.
@Geoff Z wrong, I presented facts, and you presented religious dogma
@JimmyFiveFingers @ninahcwel I beg to differ.THE GOD that have a relationship with is REAL. I was told I would never walk, well GLORY TO GOD, I walk!! I was never expected to be anything except what heartless people called me: well I am a productive person!! I am sorry for you Jimmy. HELL is as real as heaven. IF YOU DO NOT FIND GOD, THAT IS WHERE YOU WILL SPEND ETERNITY. THAT IS NOT MY JUDGEMENT, BUT GOD's. IF it were not for "MY IMAGINARY FRIEND", I WOULD BE DEAD. I cannot imagine my life without HIM.
My bet is that before you bid a last farewell to your friends, if you have any, will be preceded with a request from you to God, "if there is such a person", for help in saving you from death. Your remark about God being an imaginary friend will possibly pop into your pea-size brain. I have prayed for help in some seriously dangerous situations, and have received it. I have the comfort of having received that help. I feel sorry for you if you are in a flood, storm, hurricane, tornado, fire, trapped in a car wreck or any other situation when you need divine help. If God answers, you'd better really listen.
@Geoff Z @mbnight4 Really? You have to be connected to ALS to have a say in this? This type of pea-brained thinking is what is wrong with the world today. I do not have ALS, so therefor I can't speak up voice my opinion that these people are disgusting and don't deserve to have the lifes they do (being wealthy talk show hosts)? Having a discussion and raising awareness for uncommon diseases is entirely different from someone deservedly losing their job/being called to the public for judgement. They are not mutually exclusive, and both are important in situations like these. For you to say "Hey you don't have ALS so back off these guys" is stupid and insulting to decent human beings. Imagine that attitude towards the Jewish people in World War 2, or the innocents in Darfur. Or apply it to animal abuse... well you certainly are not part Dog therefor you cannot be upset with puppies are abused and killed for fun in dog fighting rings, and instead of punishing those people, we should let them walk and instead just raise awareness about dog fighting. You are a person with miniscule morality and an even smaller spine.

@mbnight48 @Jackiesaurus Rex @Geoff Z Since you are late to this I will give you an update on what has happened in this thread. The original reason I started writing was to point out that the people commenting were either only mad because it was something that they had a loose connection to or they just wanted to join a bandwagon of judgement. As you can see I was correct that almost everyone has since moved on and forgotten all about this.
My other point is that even though it makes people feel better to think they got fired, they haven't. Most people don't know how the radio business works but anyone with a morning show is under contract with that station and that contract will not be broken. The station said they fired them so that people will feel like justice was served but in actuality they are currently on a 6 month paid vacation serving out the rest of their contract. After that time they will get new jobs in bigger markets making more money, that's how this actually goes. The station doesn't actually care what they said, they were scared of losing money so now the bad men are gone and everyone can feel good about listening to the station and buying the products they sell.
The facts are they were a crappy unfunny radio show on a crappy AM sports talk station. 10 years ago no one would have heard about this incident but because of the internet it blew up into something huge. This situation could have been used as a springboard to talk about real issues. Before this no one was talking about ALS in the news. They could have "suspended" the djs for a few days and then brought them back and had them work with Gleason and his organization to continue to bring awareness to the situation and turned it into a positive situation that could open the eyes of other people. Instead the ALS was in the news for a day or 2 and people got to feel good because they think that 3 people lost their jobs.
I would argue that the djs already did far more good for ALS then they did harm. If they didn't talk about it, the article that Gleason wrote it would have just been another story in sports illustrated that people would have passed by to get to the latest LeBron James story. I know that I haven't heard anything about ALS in a few years and for a few days people were talking about it again.
I absolutely think you have the right to voice your opinion and you should. It should just be in the right direction. Complaining about these djs got nothing done. They didn't lose any money and in the long run they will be making more money. The only way to hurt a radio station is to not listen to it and to convince others not to. That is the only way they stations lose money and that is the only thing they care about. If people launched a campaign to stop listening to the show then they would have lost commercials and money and would have been forced off the air.
I do feel terrible about your situation. I cant say I understand what you deal with because I have no idea and it would be completely disingenuous of me to act like I do. I know its horrible and I wish there were better treatments. I just feel like another opportunity was missed to do some good because a mob of people attacked instead of being rational and just saying "hey that's not really cool let's talk about ALS for a minute" Based on the quote from Gleason himself I think he might agree with me.
And since your not even smart enough to keep your Facebook page private I don't think you have kids. I don't know any parents that have 0 mentions of their children and nothing but posts about politics and animals.
So you got me, your just a troll and you don't even believe the stuff you have been saying.
You have completely made me lose any faith I had in Georgetown or the library of Congress
1. You started all of it.
2. There is no question about your lack of intelligence.
3. You still have never been able to prove any of your points.
4. You will respond to this with some delusional statement that has very little to do with any thing I have written.
@locohoya @Geoff Z You presented incorrect "facts" based on stuff you heard from other people including your children. I think you are confusing me with Barry since you were getting shut down by 2 people at once. I don't talk about god because I don't believe in one, that's Barry's thing and he's good at it.
All I did was point out that everything you said was incorrect and mostly made up, like when you said you were done talking several times yet you keep getting back into it.
If your going to argue with people that are smarter than you, you need to have all your facts in line and double check them so you can at least pretend to be smart.
Unless you can point out a time when I said anything about god to you, but you cant.
I look forward to hearing from you again since you can't even back up your statements about not saying anything else.
@Geoff Z I saw doctors but in those days they thought if you were physically disabled, then you were mentally disabled too. AS I got older my family saw nothing was wrong with my mind, only my feet. In school, I was bullied, tormented, and etc. It took GOD bringing good people into my life to give me a different life. I had no idea about so much until then. People who do as those radio guys are bad influences/rolemodels to the children who listen. They make it seem ok to treat others as dirt/ jokes. I just want people to see that if we treat others as we want to be treated ; life goes so much better because we are all kind instead of jerks. IF we live the way JESUS did with our actions, and tried to act as He would have. Our actions are the only thing in this world that we have control of. Why treat each other like trash? Especially when GOD thinks we are so much more.
@heavenbound34: If you think so ...
You know that you had better be right when all is said and done. God is the creator, not created. The first thing I will do is pray for the lost such as yourself and Jimmy. You knock God because you have no knowledge of who God is, and that is okay for the time being. I worship Him because of who He is and my need for a Savior, not because I wish to be immortal. Do me and all believers a favor,
and don't put words in our mouths. After all, I do not knock you and Jimmy for wanting to spend eternity in Hell.....
