Former UNC head coach Matt Doherty has recently found work as a college basketball analyst for ESPN. I didn't even realize he was doing work for the network until I heard him on the call for Kansas' upset loss to TCU earlier this season. This week he appeared on ESPNU's roundtable show "The Experts" and delivered a shot across the bow at Turner's star analyst - Charles Barkley. Although Doherty doesn't call out Barkley by name, he says it's "turrible" that someone who doesn't call regular season college basketball covers tournament games and says it disrespects the event...
"In my expert opinion, I'd like to see the network broadcasting the NCAA Tournament put on regular season college analysts to cover the games. I think it disrespects the event, it disrespects the players, I think it's a turrible decision that they've made."
It's not every day you see a basketball analyst call out another from a rival network so openly, especially someone who works for ESPN, whose business is making you think they're the only sports network that exists in the universe. Perhaps Doherty is merely "punching up" in this case, but it's a legitimate example of growing resistance within college basketball to Barkley's NCAA analysis. There's many folks around college basketball who would wholeheartedly agree with Doherty's assessment. There's not many who would say it on national television.
There's no disputing Chuck's brilliance and entertainment value as an NBA analyst, but some of the things he's said in this year's tournament have been particularly puzzling. His strange feud against the Big Ten came out of nowhere and his inability to provide in-depth perspective and analysis on the games and players hurts the broadcasts. For as much as Charles Barkley brings to the table, it may be time for CBS and Turner to rethink his role in their NCAA Tournament coverage.

"his Inability to Provide in-depth perspective and analysis on the games and players hurts the broadcasts."
That's because college basketball doesn't need in-depth analysis. It's a bunch of mediocre "athletes" who'll be looking for real jobs in a few weeks. Most of these games have been an embarrassment to the game of basketball.
@awfulannouncing ESPN = TMZ for sports fans.
@TonyBasilio much rather listen to barkley than seth davis.. barkley doesnt kiss the rear of regal society
@awfulannouncing Sir Charles and The Jet are so played\/tired. For the best announcers\/commentators look no further than ESPN's soccer boys.
@awfulannouncing The only problem w\/ Charles doing the Tournament is that he doesn't knows college basketball + it's obvious at times.
@awfulannouncing .... Yes
%s he also said that having %s analysts do commentary on collegehoops is just "turrible" his words, not mine %s %s %s
C. Barkley needs to stay with NBA ONLY. Too negative and does not know much about college BBALL. Big ten overated and they go 10-4. And the last two lost to much higher seeds with close games.
@awfulannouncing Doherty does realize he works for a network that brings on rappers, actors and comedians to analyze sports, right?
@awfulannouncing Sour grapes!
@awfulannouncing Seriously Matt Doherty? When was the last time that dude was relevant?
@revafriedel Doh better watch his back
@revafriedel Charles is Awesome..
@awfulannouncing Doherty was disrespectful to basketball in general
@awfulannouncing for how much I enjoy Charles Barkley's antics, I have to agree. His lack of knowledge of the teams and players is a joke
%s It is. Sayin before the tourney that the Big 10 was overrated. Then saying Memphis was gonna beat lil bro. NOT. %s
@awfulannouncing WHo the hell is Matt Doherty???? nuff said...
@awfulannouncing so was dohertys coaching
@awfulannouncing Doherty's coaching was disrespectful to the tournament. See what I did there?
@awfulannouncing ..intended to be fun. What cbs is doing = much more offensive. Sport's biggest event and they have an outsider in studio.
@awfulannouncing Picking a fight with Charles Barkley. Good luck Matt
@awfulannouncing When its obvious an NBA guy has no credibility analyzing the college game-name shouldn't matter. Chucking Chuck is ok here
@awfulannouncing Matt Doherty's presence is disrespectful to the sport, period.
@awfulannouncing I found Doherty's coaching disrespectful to basketball
@awfulannouncing espn got slammed for having SAS among other comment on sports they don't cover. but at least those were mere segments...
@awfulannouncing because his coaching job is so good...oh wait...
@awfulannouncing Matt Doherty's presence on my TV is disrespectful.
@awfulannouncing I don't think Barkley would do it if he didn't have to. I'm sure the ratings are up for CBS\/Turner when he's on the air.
@awfulannouncing Matt is correct,Charles is better suited for the NBA,he's not in tune with the daily happenings of the NCAA.
@awfulannouncing "Doherty's second season was the worst in recent history as the Tar Heels finished the season with a record of 8–20."
@awfulannouncing Whatever @ that. Barkley's presence is very much appreciated. One of the most enjoyable basketball commentators.
@awfulannouncing His coaching presence at North Carolina was "disrespectful" to the university.
@awfulannouncing Matt Doherty has a striking resemblance to Mike Pereira
@awfulannouncing BUT....is there anyone on Earth who knows less about the NCAA Tournament than Matt Doherty?
@awfulannouncing that's not awful announcing...that's awesom announcing!
