According to the LA Times, Fox is going to launch their rumored second 24/7 cable sports network, Fox Sports 2, in conjunction with Fox Sports 1 in August.
While FS1 is going to be dedicated to the more mainstream sports (college, MLB, NASCAR) and have more marketing behind it, FS2 will be the lesser known of the two:
"While Fox Sports 1 is getting a big marketing push behind it, Fox Sports 2 will have a much softer launch. It is unclear what sports will be on the new channel initially besides mixed martial arts. Fox Sports 1 already has an impressive lineup for a start-up that includes NASCAR, college football and basketball, with regular-season and postseason Major League Baseball coming in 2014."
Since FS2 is taking the place of Fuel TV, we can assume it will heavy up on the UFC coverage and maybe air some of the leftover soccer coverage from Fox Soccer, which is biting the dust.
Just by the naming of Fox Sports 1, you knew a Fox Sports 2 wouldn't be far behind. It would be a surprise though to see it come into being right alongside FS1. Launching not one but two 24/7 sports networks on the same day would be quite the feat. Between these two networks and their already existing regional stations (Fox Sports West, etc), News Corp is definitely expanding its sports coverage in a huge way. When you throw in the talent they've been poaching from ESPN and Canada, it looks like we have a lot to look forward to come August.
Who cares about the football and baseball stuff, what happened to the Hot Rod TV, Geerz, My Classic Car, Pinks Pass Time, Trucks U, NASCAR Track Side, Wind Tunnel etc... Really !!! 18 years of Speed all thrown out the door so they can air football and baseball along with some races !!! One pissed off customer !!! FOX really messed this one up big time.
I'm hoping that with the arrival of of FOX1 and FOX2 we'll start getting more SPORTS coverage and less of the TMZ "reporting" that the 4 letter network has become so fond of. There is a lot of garbage on TV right now not worthy of airtime in my opinion..
Agreed with several below - there's a lot of live Speed programming that will need a new home - Grand-Am, ARCA, NASCAR Trucks and other minor series, practice and qualifying for all three major NASCAR series, Petit Le Mans, motorsports studio shows, etc. plus what ever is left from Fox Soccer. Has anyone heard what will happen to Speed2? I was hoping some of the other racing series that they replay, like V8s and DTM, would find a new home there.
Speed has a fair amount of stuff that won't fit into FS1, esp after NCAA football starts. Brotherflounder, Despain said on MRN radio a few weeks ago he is retiring at the end of the year" maybe sooner", so Win Ttunnel may not be on the switch, unless they go without Dave.
@BrianCullatherAw, man, really? Hard to see Wind Tunnel without Despain, but I suppose anything's possible.
Between NCAA and UFC, I'm not sure that the Truck Series is going to finish the entire season on FS1.
UFC is going to be on Fox Sports 1. They're the main event, so to speak, on the opening day. It's all UFC from 2:30pm until midnight that day. Reruns and repeats may fill up some timeslots on FS2, but FS1 is the home of the UFC.
I'd bet some of the racing from SPEED goes over to FS2, especially the Grand-Am races. Wouldn't be surprised to see Wind Tunnel move over there as well.
