Things couldn't be going much worse for MLB on Fox broadcasts this year. Heading into this past weekend's primetime contests, all six of the telecasts couldn't draw a 2.0 rating, and three of the six broadcasts all fell below 1.5. Two weekends ago, the slate of games highlighted by Reds-Phillies drew a pathetic 1.2 rating and 1.7 million viewers, down 37% and 42% from Red Sox-Phillies last year in primetime, and 54% and 59% from Red Sox-Yankees in 2011, also in primetime.
But coming out of the first weekend of primetime games, there's good news and bad news for MLB. In the good news department, the league drew 2.2 million viewers for a pretty middling slate of games. In the bad news department, MLB lost the head to head matchup with the NHL. Yeah, that's right: the NHL beat MLB, and it wasn't even close. Saturday night's Blackhawks-Red Wings Game 5 on NBC drew 2.9 million viewers, and picked up a 1.1 rating in the 18-49 demo, compared to just 0.5 for MLB in the same demo.
And when you look at the preliminary overnight rating for the NHL (a 2.0), it looks more and more like MLB on Fox has once again failed to crack a 2.0 rating this season. Considering that this week featured matchups in primetime, that's really not a good sign. Perhaps the shuffling of games to Fox Sports 1 isn't an attempt to enhance the new network, but instead an opportunity to dump a franchise that is seeing its rating tank off of the main Fox mothership.
Why don't the announcers just get on there knees and kiss the red sox butts. They act like the cardinals don't even belong there. Just give the red sox the title so I we don't have to listen to there butt kissing.
(not necessarily in that order)
After that there is nobody close. And, I mean nobody. There are some awful hacks out there trying to pull off hockey play by play.
I wouldn't blame this on the announcing. Did you bail on the Baltimore-Denver playoff game just because you didn't want to listen to Dan Dierdorf anymore?
If MLB on Fox is hitting rock bottom, that can only mean that the rest of the country is finally realizing what I have been championing for decades. Fox sports coverage is horrible. It is hands-down absolutely the worst of any network, major or regional. The announcers suck (I'm looking at you, joe buck sucks and McCarver) and trying to make sense out of their "display" (I don't know the real term for it) in the upper left corner of the screen is next to impossible. Fox should not be allowed anywhere near anything sports-related.
How about this, maybe hockey is a better sport to watch (especially in the playoffs) than regular season baseball? Maybe that's it. 3 hours of fast action and physical play on the ice versus grass growing in centerfield while Derek Jeter steps out of the box 4 times every pitch so he can fix his batting gloves. But Fox Sports ruins everything; from the NFL, to stock cars and fans in the stands at live races now apparently. Oh, and who could forget the Fox Sports "Glow Puck" when they had the NHL years ago.
And they're creating their own 24 hour sports network...*rimshot*...but didn't they already do that with the regional stuff too......?
McCarver knows baseball. Buck's just riding daddy's coattails. and it's the SAME damn teams all the time.
When will people realize baseball is a regional sport? I subscribe to the MLB.TV package to watch the Tigers, I am not about to have a hankering to watch the 10 games under .500 NY Mets have a nationally televised game for the 8th time in two months. Sorry.
show cubs/cards games, I know that will draw national viewers, cubs fans all over the country #bleedcubbieblue
Buck-McCarver are HORRIBLE. I would rather listen to my team on the radio outside doing something than stay inside and subject myself to those clowns.
as i was talking to a friend a mine about this. baseabll is just too old.
guys like bob costas and tim mcarver dont help. when your broadcasters spend majority of the game reminiscing about ted williams and mickey mantle and barely cover the actual game. it is a turn off to young viewers.
@stack1975 I think you posted this in the wrong comment thread. ;)
