Talkers, the self-proclaimed "Bible of Talk Radio and New Talk Media" has released their annual list of the 100 "most important" sports talk radio hosts in the country for 2013. While that's a peculiar designation that opens up quite the can of worms, that's how they frame the list. And at the top of said list, peering down at the unwashed masses, is the sports pope himself Mike Francesa. Clearly, Mike Francesa doesn't need a list from any publication to tell him he's the most important sports talk radio host in America, he knows that already. For what it's worth, former partner Chris Russo comes in at #29
Quantifiying and listing sports talk radio hosts from 1-100 and directly comparing local markets from across the country to national shows and vice versa seems like an impossible to quantify task. What factors make Lee "Hacksaw" Hamilton come in at #92 ahead of Sedano & Stink at #93, who have been together for a very brief period of time? How does one compare an afternoon show in Seattle to a morning show in Washington DC? Furthermore, the list opens itself to even more questions. It's very WFAN friendly with 4 different shows making the list including #1 Mike Francesa and #2 Boomer and Carton. Evidently Keith Olbermann does not have any say in these rankings. Mike & Mike and Colin Cowherd appear in the Top 22 but there's no sign of SVP and Russillo. I don't know how anyone makes a list of the Top 100 most important sports talk radio shows and not include ESPN Radio's best pairing. At least the list didn't include Dan Sileo or Damon Bruce.
Nevertheless, in these rankings Mike Francesa is king. In spite of all his foibles, arguments, sleepy moments, and epic feuds, his radio empire is stronger than ever. It's just another feather in the cap Francesa can use when he's swatting away prank callers and peasants like Keith Olbermann.
Without a doubt the Steve Czaban and the crew on Yahoo Sports Radio are the most entertaining and informative radio program. It is a must listen to!
Can't take Francesa, Russo, Mike & Mike anymore. There programs are God Awful!!!!
Any Talkers list really has no factors and is subjective to the point, they say so in their introduction. It is just it editors looking at who spends money in the magazine (CBS Radio, ClearChannel, Cumulus...) and just randomly rank shows. Heck, Finebaum, was off the air for six months, but gets an enormous ESPN contract and only jumps two slots from the initial Talkers Sports Radio 100 which was in June 2012.
Also, Dan Sileo has been fired from three stations, in three markets in the two years in which they have has a sports radio only list and he is still on the top 100. That's because he has been writing for the magazine since 2009.
Lets be clear "Talkers" has 893 Twitter Followers it is a joke of an 'organisation' with no credibility or standing. It was terrible when that awful organ of the Washington Village mentality Politico thought it was a story that Limbaugh was number one according to Talkers, not so bad that you care, you gotta have something to write about, but my god, lets not give Talkers any standing it doesnt deserve. I'd personally take AA rankings over theirs.
The fact that SVP and Russillo are not ranked in the top 100 yet an amateur sociologist like Cowherd is in the top 22 and the #1 guy falls asleep on air and won't talk hockey in the home of an Original 6 franchise and another historic NHL franchise proves this list is a joke.
So Steve Czaban makes it for his local afternoon show (it's pretty much in the same spot w/his new co-host as it was last year with his old one) but his national show isn't even on there?? And most of these "important" radio shows would KILL for the ratings Kentucky Sports Radio gets here locally in share and it's not even mentioned.
You have to remember: this is the same publication that consistently put Michael Weiner ("Savage") at #3 in political talk radio despite the facts that A: he had high shares but low TSL ("time spent listening" for the non-radio-savvy) because his timeslot sucked and hearing him pound on the same topics for three hours is tiresome, B: he's most known for controversy, not for actually entertaining anyone, and C: he was, in the grand scheme of things, completely irrelevant to talk radio other than the fact that he occupied time on stations' schedules as filler because nothing else was on at those hours. Somehow, in their minds, that made him a juggernaut. So to see them put Francesa at #1 in sports should come as no surprise. Talkers just kind of haphazardly throws these things together with weak reasoning and says "there, it's done."
@Zach13090 There are a good number of sports talking heads that won't talk hockey. It's time for John Buccigross to get his own radio show. He'll talk hockey all day!
