Sometimes, I wonder how certain columns get published. Sometimes, they are just so offensive or off topic or misinformed that we have to wonder who allows these affronts to humanity to be available to the general public. The NY Post's Phil Mushnick has written something that trancends all stupidity and reaches a new low, even by his standards. Mushnick is, for reasons beyond comprehension, using the death of Adrian Peterson's son to prove some sort of character flaw. Mind boggling.
Okay. I don't even know where to start. First of all, I seem to recall Brett Favre playing in a game right after his father died, throwing four touchdown passes, and being heralded as brave and heroic and all that. So that can't apply to Peterson? Second of all, the whole idea that just because Peterson was not with his son's mother or living with them somehow means he doesn't care is a gross generalization backed up by NOTHING. Not one single thing.
You would think it couldn't get worse, but it does:
How can Mushnick say ANY of this? He has no idea what the situation was, what Peterson did or didn't know, and furthermore, erasing everything else, using the death of a child to provide commentary on Peterson's character is sickening. Tying past arrest to a child's death is irrelevant. Using mistakes to say, "hey this guy's kid died and he's a bad person," is not a valid argument.
Sure, we all have the tendency to glorify athletes, but this is not about Peterson the athlete, or his character. This is about a parent losing a child, and to try and make it about anything else, especially advancing some kind of sick, twisted, demented agenda for pageviews, is disgusting. For the Post to publish it and endorse it is arguably even worse.
There is only one sentence in that column I'd take issue with.
But given Peterson’s father did hard time for drug money laundering, and his half-brother was murdered, maybe we’re both stuck with the values in which we were born, raised.
Too bad he had to throw that nonsense in there because the rest of it is right on the money.
I agree....the "history" of racism is there..ignored or not....but, too, is the "reality" of black babies born out of wedlock who grow up without fathers is nowadays almost 75%, up from just over 20% in the early 60's...perhaps in some way it can all be traced back to racism and perhaps a resulting type of self hatred......but still the "reality" exists of a large proportion of fatherless children doing poorly in school , getting in trouble and many of those ending up in jail...please read the article Peg Tyre wrote for Newsweek, "The Trouble with Boys"..not an indictment against boys....but an astoundingly sad collection of statistics on what happens to many boys when their biological fathers are not at home....she says father figures, uncles and such can be good but it is just not the same....ignoring, blaming, victimhood will not (re)claim sanity in this saddest of situations....(more than a situation..I just don't have a word for it)
Besides being poorly written, this article misses the point, although in that it is hardly alone. Anyone who blasts Mushnick, whether intentionally or not, chooses to ignore the larger problem that is pervasive in the African-American community; the inordinate amount of children born out of wedlock. AP himself has at least three. Where is the outcry for the 72% (that's SEVENTY-TWO PERCENT) of black children that grow up without a father in the home? Where is the outcry for the actual suffering of these poor kids? Instead, we get knee-jerk, reflexive responses such as this that only serve the author's fear of being called a racist. It's the collective "can you believe what this guy wrote?" Of people who are too cowardly to address the core issues that plague these children.
God Bless Phil for telling the truth & saying what the majority of us are thinking. He should be praised. I wish there were more like Phil.
How many Baby Mamas does AP have? Does he know? Does he WANT to know? Yeah, he is a great great guy....
Where the hell is any common sense deSling with this??? Just because Adrian Perterson plays football doesn't make him a good person. Driving 105 in a 55 zone is irresponsible. Having a child and not being responsible for it, esp when you've signed a multimillion dollar contract, and having more than one illegitimate child and not taking responsible for them, and then leaving a child in that environment. Please tell me where in any bodies life is that a good person? This may have been an inoportune time to say it, but it doesn't mean it's not true!!!
Lack of morality brought this child into the world. Lack of morality took him out. He was doomed from the start. Oh but let's speak of morality....oh GOD no. Mushnick brought up some good points. Reva is a dolt!
It's not like you're talking about an actual news outlet. It's the New York Post, they're barely a step above the National Enquirer
This is the same guy who, a few years ago, wrote a blurb in a column about a 13-year old girl, who's father paid to have his daughter drop the ceremonial first puck at an Islander game and was boo'ed by the crowd...and HE chose to criticize the practice of paying for such privileges instead of the crowd in attendance for booing an innocent 13-year old girl. So I emailed Mushnick and called him on it, saying "when is it ever OK to boo an innocent kid"? And he writes me back saying "We're BOTH wrong (my accent on "both").
What a P.O.S. Mushnick is.
I think ITS SO PATHETIC AND DISGUSTING that u uptight assholes want to agree that mushnick was not out of line...WHEN THE FK DID ANY OF U SCUMBAGS hang out w that man..or his kids mother,,and find out there story....U DIDNT,,,mlre than half the reports on t.v are false, ,so... A. You cant believe reports,,and B..THE GUY LITERALLY JUST FOUND OUT FOR SURE THAT WAS HIS SON...SO GIVE IT UP W JUDGING YOUNG BLACK MEN IN SPORTS...if it peyton or Tom youd have afkng hard on for him...u all make me sick...AND IM A WHITE FEMALE FROM BOSTON ...so i am not siding w MY OWN RACE,,as im sure u r saying,,,im siding w RESPECT MORALS AND DESCENSY. ..which apparently u have none
Mushnick did 'project' MORE than a little bit here. Maybe it's not the most offensive sports column (I can name a handful from Mushnick alone that compete) but it is, at the least, self-serving and insensitive. This is also why I stopped reading NY Post sports columnists over 25 years ago.
His cavalier/unsubstantiated comments about how much or little Peterson was involved in his child's life aren't defensible but the assessment about "baby mamas" is dead on. And yes you can accurately say that Tom Brady had a baby mama in Bridgette Moynihan but he obviously is still heavily involved in both their lives proved by the fact they both attended his wedding to Giselle. That kind of involvement/support is sadly lacking in society in general and in situations like this and by athletes in particular.
The #1 job in the world is to take care of the the people you bring in the world...if done maybe 95% of the world's problems would not be here....YES, THE TRUTH SHALL SET YOU FREE, BUT FIRST IT WILL PISS YOU OFF.....another way I heard it, "wanna make somebody mad, tell 'em the truth."
"With his resources, how could Peterson, the NFL’s MVP, have allowed his son to remain in such an environment? Did he not know, or not care? Or not care to know? Or not know to care?"
Uh, actually, he didn't know, at least according to the initial reports. He just found out about the boy 2 months ago and had never met him. Tool.
Why is anyone surprised by this? Rupert Murdoch owns the NY Post and also knows Fox News. Their sole goal is to bash and trash people all day long. Fox News and The NY Post constantly pits Americans against other Americans. If Peterson was an outspoken Republican that supported Republican causes and candidates, Mushnick would have written a very different article saying what a hero Petersen is. Both Fox and The NY Post are total trash.
"Sometimes, I wonder how certain columns get published."
Probably because they know sites like these will link to it. Mission accomplished. Page views.
Over at Grantland.com, they call this a #hotsportstake. That's all this is. Just a guy trying to be skip bayless and have the opinion people disagree with, purely for the sake of doing so.
Phil Mushnick is and always will be a FRAUD! This is the same "media columnist" who was ordered by his own newspaper NOT to critique an afternoon radio program in NYC because the two hosts were former employees of the POST. FRAUD FRAUD FRAUD! Please I read him because I work in the business but to believe anything he writes? NOPE not me.
None of us know what AP was going through. I too was a little put off by his comments and seemingly sole focus on football, but we don't know the full story or how he processes grief. So while I judge others on a regular basis, I can't really judge AP for this one. However to compare this situation to Brett Favre's is beyond ludicrous.
Greg, Mushnick did not say or imply that. He was upset about Jay-Z owning part of the Nets. Jay-Z, not Mushnick uses the N-word on a regular, public basis. His point was, if you have a problem with people using the N-word, Jay-Z should be on the top of your list.
I just read that obnoxious article. We ALL must REMEMBER that Mushnick is PERFECT and has never done any questionable things or made any foolish mistakes. Oh, to think that when I was out sailing, I could have seen Mushnick walking on water. How could I have MISSED it! What should have been written about is domestic violence in the NFL (nothing to do with AP) and end with a reminder to hug your loved ones (especially) the children just a wee bit tighter. Everyone have a good day.
I can see where AA is coming from, but Mushnick did not write "the most offensive sports column..." It may be ham fisted, but he was asking some pertinent (in the context of Peterson's world) questions.
Yes, Mushnick has said some despicable things but this isn't one of them. To compare a man of an advanced age like Irvin Favre who died of a heart attack to a 2 year old child senselessly beaten is trivializing this childs death. Look at both incidents with a rational mind, to compare them like that it to politicize these events.
Where the hell is any common sense dealing with this??? Just because Adrian Peterson plays football doesn't make him a good person. Driving 105 in a 55 zone is irresponsible. Having a child and not being responsible for it, esp when you've signed a multimillion dollar contract, and having more than one illegitimate child and not taking responsible for them, and then leaving a child in that environment. It doesn't matter that he didn't know!! Are we really supposed to believe that if his mother could prove it they wouldn't go after money? Free money? Oh, please! We don't know for a fact if he knew or not, we know he dipped his wick, and when you do that without protection - taa daa!!Please tell me where in any bodies life, someone with this baggage is a "good" person? They don't call them deadbeat dads for nothing! Is this a good person? This may have been an inoportune time to say it, but it doesn't mean it's not true!!!
@jordansmom214 wow,,,,,scumbag(s)....that's a broad stroke.....I hardly know the Post from the Times no, I didn't hang out with AP, or HIS child's mother...nor do I think that you have...nor do I believe everything that is reported in media....and if AP did just find out....why in 2 months has he seemingly not connected..moreover, why might he not know that he fathered a child...how old was the child, 2, that's a long time to not know...she did have help in bringing the child into the world....and as far as judging young....black .....men....in sports.....all I said was that the #1 one job is to take care of those you bring into the world....if that is judging.....well then.....columnists write, that's what they do......and I spoke to how the truth can make someone mad....maybe, just maybe, there is some truth to what the columnist said....and to admit to that truth might call for a rearranging of one's life map.....the morals..the respect, the decency you spoke to....
Again....another asshole who DOSNT EVEN KNOW HIS FACTS,,,,,the fkn guy didnt know he even had this son till 2 mnths ago..so all that shit that was reported ..is bullshit..u just jump on thescumbag bandwagon ...GOOD FOR U
Some people have trouble hearing the truth or they're Viking's fans.
This selfish attitude is what leads to abortion, "whatever works for me, the hell with everyone else," and now a baby is dead. It seems no one cares about that!!! They're up in arms because the truth and reality are uncomfortable.
Because obviously u are a disgusting probally racist incensitive piece of fkng garbage. Did u not understand HE JUST FOUND OUT ABOUT THE BOY 2MNTHS AGO....so how the fk did he REALLY KNOW the environment or was able to give him n the mother a better life..its garbage like u that makes people want to kill
Let me take a wild guess here...you're a big fan of the loving uniters at msnbc and ny times...pulleeessse...I don't care who Musnick writes for, he writes the truth, regardless of race or gender...he is a very much needed, if lonely, voice in the fetid cesspool called politically correct main stream media...
Have you not been paying attention?? A baby is dead and you are going after Fox News!! This was Mushnik's opinion. He is allowed one, just like you and yours. He has a platform, if you don't like it don't read him, allow the man his rights! No one said you had to read it. You don't seem to care when someone calls someone with a different point of view a terrorist or hostage taker!
@Guest78 Trash response to a trash article!
@Guest78 like the other column what the hell does this have to do with it?, save your obvious left wing preaching for the huff post, I agree with Mushnick, just because he has some guts to say whats on a lot of minds, this is, and was a tragedy, made worse by the seeming nonchalance that peterson displayed
Mick, great tag...now, please tell me when the jackass bayless, or ANY of the espn cesspoolers have addressed the 72% out of wedlock African American births? You not only insult Mushnick by comparing him to the dolt bayless, you trivialize an incredibly tragic epidemic...God bless...
Agattullo, easy there skippy...seems like you have a bone to pick...sadly, you use the msnbc tactic of failing to address the issue...that being Phil exposing this whole Peterson affair...you also fail to substantiate who the heck these two guys are he was "ordered" to not write about, why his bosses would CARE if Phil wrote about them and, most interesting, how you would be privy to those orders? If you can answer those, please enlighten us about the crux of Phil's column, 72% of African American children being born out of wedlock...God bless you and take the hate out of your heart...
Reading this thread and yours in particular, fitdiva, I have to wonder if those of you bashing Mr. Mushnick made it past 5th grade...the man is a spots TV newspaper critic...I've read his work for years...he has never claimed to be perfect...he's made mistakes and each time, in his next column, he points out that miscue, apologises and sets the record straight...the ny times could learn a lot from him...fitdiva, Phil has written, MANY times about domestic violence...the politically correct jackass who wrote the above article is not part of the solution...Phil Mushnick IS the solution! God bless...
@1michturner @jordansmom214 .....YOU ARE SUCH A BITCH....READ WHAT YOU JUST WROTE AND THINK ABOUT IT..quote...all I said was that the #1 one job is to take care of those you bring into the world...YOU KNOW NOTHING...HOW DO YOU KNOW HE WASN'T..WERE YOU THERE WHEN THEY WERE FUCKING AND SHE MOVED OUT OF STATE..HELL NO..WELLL...SEE, IF YOU DON'T KNOW THE WHOLE STORY SHUT THE FUCK UP..GET YOUR INFO BEFORE YOU START JUDGING OTHERS..LOOK IN THE MIRROR FIRST..BUT IM SURE YOU DO AND ARE VERY DIS APPOINTED WITH WHAT YOU SEE..CHECK OUT WHAT THE MOTHER'S BEST FRIEND SAID ABOUT HER... THEN WRITE YOUR LIL FUNKY ASS COLUMN...OTHER THAN THAT..AGAIN STFU
Ms. Jordansmom214...He is unintelligent, simpleminded, dense, which sums up to...STUPID
@Miranda Anique ....Robert Phillips is RIGHT..ALL TRASH IM DONE....Think about it people....
@1michturner @leisamadaris @jordansmom214 Well teaching kids for 32 years...What was I suppose to say...not impressed at all..You dont know that man...Thats my point..you assume every damn thing..When you know someone and you can speak on their behave, then you can say anything..Until til then again STFU and let that man be..He just found out he fathered that baby...Some of you in this world of media needs to step down..Get a clue first..but I feel you got into this just to piss people off..your rude and very heartless to others...Maybe you should go back to school..Take a sensitive class..I've worked with children to..For years I have seen it all..There were times I had to deal with special needs children..You remind me of them No I'm sorry, your worst
@leisamadaris @1michturner @jordansmom214 maybe I am a "B".....I have not only read what I wrote, I have lived it..I do know something...not much but something...you then disagree with the #1 job is to take care of those you bring into the world? Wow, such anger......no, I do not know the particulars.....I think I know he fathered the child...and you know what? That column maybe is in fact full of falsehoods....but I look around.....having taught school for 32 years and have seen up close what the results are for the sad children who have been neglected/not taken care of.....if I told you the mirrors I have looked in you might again minimize/ and slander that too...making it personal with me and with such hostility, well.....this is only the second time I have ever posted something in response to ANYTHING on the internet.....I knew better...here's a quote for the road...."A man convinced against his will is of the same opinion still".....I know......lame...by a "B" 'a'hole, no nothing, wannabe smart like you, not introspective person, funky 'a' column writin' person who needs to STFU.....
Yes, exactly think about people, not one person - Adrian Petersen, think about all the little babies born to women without husbands that let boyfriends move in and the boyfriend kills or abuses "not his child." Evolution decrees this. Petersen is a millionaire and has known for 2 months and did nothing to get this child out of that atmosphere. He isn't the victim -that dead unnamed baby is! Give a da* n about the innocent baby and think about the future .
