Fox College Saturday is Fox Sports 1's challenge to ESPN's venerable College GameDay. When Fox College Saturday was announced, ESPN almost immediately responded by moving GameDay's first hour from ESPNU to the Mothership. This is actually a revamped version of last year's show which ran on the Fox Mothership. Erin Andrews and Eddie George are the holdovers from last year. Joey Harrington, who did not shine in the studio, was jettisoned to game commentary and the show was expanded to include rules analyst Mike Pereira, Fox Sports Radio's Petros Papadakis and Joel Klatt. And to bring an outsider presence, Clay Travis is on-hand to provide his brand of commentary.
Intead of having a traditional set, Fox College Saturday has a round table to supposedly allow for easier discussion and to differentiate from GameDay's anchor desk. To help Erin with the heavy lifting, Klatt has been given co-hosting duties. He does the highlights and helps to push the discussion. One of the on-set dynamics is for Pereira to pick on Papadakis. Actually, everyone picks on Papadakis. Apparently he's there for comic relief.
The big difference you'll notice with Fox College Saturday is that it's in the Fox Sports 1 studios in Los Angeles as compared to College GameDay's traveling road show. The energy and atmosphere that makes GameDay the best pregame show in sports television (along with its cast) is notably absent on Fox Sports 1. It's as if Fox is trying to use the Fox NFL Sunday formula on Fox College Saturday. And while it's not a total yukfest like the Sunday NFL pregame, there is the emphasis on fun - like the picking on Petros.
Does it work? Well, there are segments where Klatt takes the lead and the show truly becomes his. Andrews has improved after her shaky start with Fox College Saturday last year. There's only been one show in 2013, but Andrews does better handing off to this crew than when she had to carry George and Harrington in 2012. There is definitely better chemistry in this year's cast and it helps that Klatt has been brought in to co-host.
Can the show hold its own against College GameDay? No. GameDay is a Saturday morning institution. It will be tough in the early going, but if Fox sticks with it, the show can gain something of an audience. GameDay has become a cultural phenomenom and it's not going away anytime soon, and Fox knows that. But if FS1 can stay the course, it will eventually gain some eyeballs to Fox College Saturday. It just won't be making a huge challenge for the top Saturday morning pregame show.
It sounds like envy to me ShaneSmithinator. Are you serious? Do you really think FOX is better than ESPN's Gameday? I have to adamantly agree that it is an institution. They have the home crowd at each host college there to get some energy going each Saturday morning. Where is your dumpy tavern?
Speaking of FOX, listening to FOX News makes people dumber: http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/blogs/national-affairs/study-watching-fox-news-actually-makes-you-less-informed-20120524
You gotta be kidding about ESPN Gameday being an "institution" ...ESPN college Game Day sucks....the tavern we have worked at the past 3 years would never air it and now that FOX and Erin Andrews came on last year it has been on the air every Saturday as we prepare for the lunch time crowd.
ESPN gameday is a complete pompous joke as the cast is sooo boastful and prideful of their game picks...big deal. The gang around the tavern make more sense than the idiots on ESPN Gameday. Haven't watched that bunch of pinheads in 2+ years and could care less about any of their bias analysis. FOX Gameday has a great future as folks have realized the phony pc nonsense that ESPN dishes out, and more and more are tuning them out for everything other than game action.
Klatt is a huge improvement over Harrington. Harrington seemed to have a "deer in the headlights" look. Does EA really add value? C'mon....
I think they should consider picking a big college game every weekend like Gameday does. While it wouldn't be the same, there's more than enough great locations and I think it would give the show more attention. Fans would still come out because they're already tailgating anyway. I'm just not a fan of a studio based show. It lacks the energy that college football has.
I think the logic behind this is that they have so many Pac-12 games that the Final wouldn't air until something like 2 AM ET and keeping the studio crew there for something like 18 hours wouldn't be feasible at the moment
For the 1st show, it was ok. Needs stronger reports from the field. Like the new crew. Not sure what other people were watching, but EA was witty, took control when needed, and did a splendid job hosting. Does the show measure up to GameDay? No, not yet.
Caught a bit during the morning, agree that Klatt is good, Travis seemed okay to me too. Caught one segment at the round table and the camera shots were scattershot, tight,,and unable to match up with the person speaking, a bit too confusing for my like. As a NASCAR fan also I have to wonder if Sat. activity from Atl. would not have given FS! a better number that the football show.
If Chris Fowler leaves Game Day when his contact is up then it's not going to be the same. He's really the glue that holds it together. I can't stand Lee Corso, Mark May & Lou Holtz. Herbstreit is ok.
Tuned in durig the commercials while watching GameDay. The show is still awful but as you said a little better then last year. Joel Klatt isn't bad they should move him to host and let EA do features. She just isn't a good host or co-host ESPN knew that. Petros and Clay show some promise. Pereira needs to go the little I saw he kept having to look at notes he doesn't know CFB. College football fans are not leaving GameDay!
Fox sports 1 should mail this part of the day in. Clearly they still think erin andrews is going to be a huge draw and that isnt happening. Turns out college football fans really like college football talk and not just the pretty faces
The only thing that upset me about this is that FS1 didn't have like ESPN has a College Football Final where they wrap up the days highlights (to death as I call it on The Mothership!) Hoping that by 2014 once they have their sea legs maybe FS1 might think of something like that?
