If you have a hard time being convinced there's a double standard for women working in sports, feast your eyes on this lovely tweet a Philly sports talk radio host published about NBC's Michelle Beadle. Not only is it mean-spirited, it's not even based in reality.
Mike Missanelli at 97.5 The Fanatic wondered aloud about "the lbs round Michelle Beadle's middle" while Beadle was a part of NBC's NFL kickoff coverage. You think any sports personality is tweeting that about Dan Patrick or Al Michaels? I think not. Beadle caught word of the tweet and sent this in response:
Work harder, bro. and yeah, had to google you. RT @MikeMiss975: Is it out of line to point out the lbs 'round michelle beadle's middle?— Michelle Beadle (@MichelleDBeadle) September 6, 2013
If you have to ask the question whether it's out of line... it probably is. I know you'll be shocked to hear this, but this isn't Missanelli's first jackwad encounter with a famous female sports personality. Earlier this year he basically accosted Erin Andrews over her All-Star Game dress choice. Beadle's response actually digs at Missanelli's Twitter bio which says, I kid you not, "The #Outright leader in Philadelphia sports talk! Never heard of me? GoogleMe." Why would you have a hashtag for "outright"?
Missanelli later apologized, likely only after his mentions were filled with righteous anger. Once again I ask this question - what is it about the specific medium of sports talk radio that produces so much buffoonery? Tweets about joking death upon people, making fun of folks with ALS, offensive rants, Dan Sileo... all of these things have one thing in common: sports talk radio. It's bad enough to pollute local airwaves with nonsense like this, now with social media the whole world gets to hear it.
Oh please, most people know the only reason she got a show. She 'dated' the right person before his wife found out.
Miss is a sad guy whose bio gives his age as 52 ,but says he looks 10 years younger.Have you seen the guy on TV?His neck has more lines than a turkey's.The bio says he graduated from Penn St. in 1977-that would have meant he was 16 or 17.Don't think so!Mike can play all the rap music he wants-does'nt change the fact that he's almost 60 years old!Know ur after a younger demographic Mike, but ur not fooling anyone.Turn that sharp perception on ur self, and leave the ladies alone.
her even weaker comeback is all you need to know. Look up on YouTube her propositioning herself to Clay Matthews who is about to throw up at the very thought of her naked. Then watch how many networks and shows she has been on and been dumped by. Its one thing to be on an NFL show bc of your looks (that is basically every woman on any NFL show) but its a whole other thing to not actually no anything about the sport you are working in. So she doenst have either the looks or the smarts, so yes it was completely correct to point out her looks since that would supposedly be one of the things that got her on the show in the first place.
Michelle Beadle is awesome; she knows her sports, is nice to look at, and easy to on the ears :) I don't get to see her since her move to ESPN. Some things are out of bounds - no one is questioning the midsections of her male counterparts.
The world would be a MUCH better place without sports radio. Why do I want to hear a bunch of fatass, unathletic, never made the team/never played the game, douchebags and a bunch of has-been, half brain dead, old "athletes" who are still holding grudges against players that have done things they could never dream of. Michelle Beadle is hot, and this guy is a f**king loser!!!
You mean a talk radio "personality" was a dick?? And he's a sports "personality" too?? Stunning! Next you'll say he's from Philadelphia...uh wait.
This guy Missanelli is a local talking head jackweed. He's a pompous, full of himself, sarcastic buffoon. Hopefully Michelle realizesshe has more class than tthis fraud will ever have.
Though I can't agree with what he said, what kind of reporting is this? If you do some research you can find out why he has the "#outright" in the tagline. Also, using the word "jerk" in a headline is somewhat elementary. Twitter polices itself. No need to have an article about it, let alone a poorly done one.
#outright refers to a drop on his radio show where he bets on underdogs to win outright. The 'Google me' thing is from a heated interview with Skip Bayless where Skip was disrespectful to local radio hosts in general so Mike yelled 'google me' at him.
But yeah this guy is an arrogant idiot, and after listening for about a year (he's basically the only game in town on the afternoon drive home) I couldn't take it any more and tuned out. Not surprising at all.
Twitter is afire with self-deluded dreamboat perverts making comments to women that cause one to just shake one's head in shame. School on Saturday, no class.
I see nothing wrong with calling a woman out for her lack of sports knowledge if she doesn't know her stuff but this is below the belt. you want to keep the critique on topic. point out a woman in sports that seems only to serve as eye candy and is completely clueless....I give you carrie champion.
You ask why sports talk guys are asses? Well, they are hired to be asses. They are hired to be controversial, and to "push the line". So instead of being a good journalist, they instead just try to be the loudest, "funniest" or what have you. You don't get that as much in other mediums.
Hate to seem insensitive but Dan Patrick and Al Michaels didn't get jobs in sports journalism/commentating because of their looks. The sad reality is the vast majority of women in this business get their jobs because of them being attractive. Sports knowledge is secondary. Its not to say they don't the sports they're discussing, many are far more articulate and knowledgeable about competitive athletics than I or most men will ever be. Alas, any media based industry is as superficial as it gets and then add the fact that most sports fans are horny mouth-breathing men and VIOLA....that is why we are in the situation we are in.
Just listened to this guy's Erin Andrews interview, and that explains a lot. He's just a creep when it comes to women.
Even if this guy is making the argument that TV is all about your looks, blah blah blah, he did it in an awfully rude way regardless. But the fact is, Michelle Beadle is downright skinny. She doesn't have excess pounds anywhere. The way some men look at women's weight is insane.
Because a lot of it isn't "sports talk radio" anymore. I don't there are a lot of "sports talk" radio shows left on the local level. It's "guy talk" radio. The idea that it is the radio equivalent of a bunch of guys hanging out in the locker room. I went to school in Philly in the mid 90s, and Missanelli was this bad then. I've barely thought about him in the almost 20 years since. I can only imagine what it's like now.
"What is it about the specific medium of sports talk radio that produces so much buffoonery?"
They're like the loudmouth jackasses you encounter in bars, fueled by ratings instead of booze. Whatever their motivation, they're scumbags.
What was offensive about this? In an industry where TV people are hired more on their looks and less on their actual qualifications, it's a perfectly acceptable question, which is all it was. A QUESTION. If he had said "Man, Beadle's ass has really grown!", then yes, flame away.
While they may not be posting that about Al Michaels (because they can't see his middle), they are making fun of his faces quite a bit. Check out http://30fps.mocksession.com/category/al-michaels/ if you don't believe me.
I agree that he was out of line with beadle but "google me" is a reference to an interview with skip Bayless a few years ago. Mike basically called out skip for his lies during the interview. It's actually very entertaining and something you guys would respect. But yeah that beadle comments were way out of line.
@yukonxl yeah bc they werent hired for their looks and she doenst have any, hence why all these guys hate her
@Berzerker37 exactly so why are women on any of these shows to begin with, bc guarantee you they (guys) actually played football some point in their lives and didnt have pillow fight sleepovers where they gave each other makeovers, yeah thats the person I want giving me my football info.
@LovelyPatricio It's more of a quota filling thing than being about looks.
@LovelyPatricio And is that a woman's fault? Or the fault of the men who run sports networks and only cast women that their audience will like to look at? The fact of the matter is an attractive woman who really does know sports, like Michelle Beadle, is lumped in with a set of attractive women who are hired to be attractive, when really her looks and her knowledge should be addressed independently from one another, like they are for men.
@Beast19 Yes I'm sure John Madden and Tony Siragusa were hired for their good looks and low BMI index.
A more skilled male sideline reporter is always going to lose out to an attractive, skilled or unskilled, female sideline reporter when going after that job. Sports has typecast several roles and it is unfortunate for both genders.
Michelle Beadle has worked hard to try and become a legitimate broadcaster. Even if she wasn't any good at discussing sports, talk about that instead, not how she looks.
