On last night's Olbermann, KO named former Mets and Red Sox manager (and ESPN analyst) Bobby Valentine as his Worst Person in the World. Sometimes that moniker carries a tongue and cheek nature, but last night was not one of those occasions. Olbermann has been on fire since his return to sports and this lashing of Bobby V is no exception:
What's been smart about Olbermann has been his picking of spots on when to unleash the biting, unfiltered criticism that made him such a lightning rod in cable news. When it's used every night based on partisan politics, it loses effect. So far at ESPN2 though, Olbermann has had a more successful balance that echoes his SportsCenter and early Countdown days. Also, it's the first "SHAME ON YOU" I've seen on Olbermann.
The best part in all of this?
Bobby V is rumored to have a role at TBS this postseason where Keith Olbermann will just happen to be anchoring.
UPDATE: Thursday night, Bobby V was Olbermann's Worst Person in the World for a second straight night:
For myself, I can only say--Thank you Keith Obermann, Cornell Alumni, New Yorker for speaking truth in the face of lies about what happened in those pain filled days following September 11, 2001. When anyone tries to rewrite documented history, I always ask, What's in it for them? How could those statements have been of benefit to Bobby Valentine? All they did was make him look petty and small minded, dare I say jealous of the reverence the Yankees engender?
Keith Olbermann set a fine example broadcasting msnbc as an "ANTI" george bush supporter! A train of thought I truly appreciated. I hope he has a stellar career back at ESPN. He started with ESPN broadcasting the mainstay on TV named Sports Center, so Sports Center will remain a mainstay. Thank you ESPN
20 seconds was enough for me. While I enjoyed his takedown of Pete Prisco, something about the barely-controlled-anger schtick irritates. And really, who cares what Bobby Valentine said.
never agree with this moron, but I will this time, P.S., one of the funniest things in years was when stupid was introduced as an announcer at "Old Timers Day" and he was roundly, and thoroughly booed!
Love him, always have. It's amazing how when his brilliance was based on politics, half the country ignorantly "hated" him. But with sports, he has stolen the love of everyone... think about it, people...
How come Olbermann never nominates himself as the Worst Person in the World. Everywhere he goes, he gets fired. He's just like his twin brother Rachel Maddow.
@Franklin Young The Prisco "takedown" was as ad hominem as it gets. Prisco never said that concussions weren't unfortunate. He said that the players didn't deserve the settlement compensation under the premise that anyone not living in a hole (or has ever seen a boxer in his 50s) understands that getting hit in the head for a living has long term effects. Olbermann either didn't understand, or ignored the distinction because it would have gotten in the way of a rant. I haven't turned Olbermann on since then...and don't plan to.
@Kyle Linnhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yaEWY3StMTg He actually did give himself a 2nd runner up a time or two (and I think he named himself THE worst once but I can't remember when or if I even recall correctly...)
