Michelle Beadle appeared on the Sports Media Weekly podcast last week in an interview with our Ken Fang and spoke openly about the struggle in promoting her NBCSN show The Crossover. The struggle has ended abruptly as Richard Sandomir of the New York Times reports that NBC has canceled the show.
With expansion of NFL programming and NHL season starting, NBCSN cancels low-rated "The Crossover"— Richard Sandomir (@RichSandomir) September 25, 2013
The writing was on the wall with The Crossover changing formats and timeslots and most recently being preempted by America's Cup sailing on a routine basis - including today. Still though, in comparison to other NBCSN studio shows, The Crossover was doing comparable numbers. Via Son of the Bronx, The Crossover averaged 35.9k viewers in 7 episdoes from September 2-8. Pro Football Talk averaged 40k viewers in 4 episodes during the same timespan.
It's a discouraging sign for NBCSN that their studio shows can't get on track and attract viewers, but live sports rules all. It appears that NBCSN may try more pre and postgame NHL coverage and invest more in the NFL in place of The Crossover.
Beadle has always maintained she wants to do sports and entertainment at NBC. Perhaps the peacock will find a new role for her on that live event coverage, who knows. Whatever the case, it's back to the drawing board once again for NBCSN.
AA has reached out to Beadle for comment and we'll update the story as it progresses.
I just want to f**k Michelle Beadle. That's about it. Maybe she could do a Playboy spread? That would bring some eyeballs to her.
when 2 people can quip at one another and it's fun to watch, that's called chemistry. Beadle and Cowherd should stick together. once Beadle left SN, her replacement tried the same "bro/sis" style that Beadle and Cowherd had and it was annoying. why weren't either ESPN or NBC able to see that kind of charisma between 2 people? thought networks killed to find this fit? NBC is STILL trying to find that "Regis & Kathy Lee" fit. have you watched "Kelly&Michael" ? garbage!
@awfulannouncing Michele Beadle is unbearable
@awfulannouncing Beadle is no "household name" except among sports media types on Twitter
@awfulannouncing all I can say is...it's about time. That show was absolutely brutal.
@awfulannouncing So sailing is watchable?
@awfulannouncing Beadle's a mess.
@awfulannouncing between the pop up videos and two autoplay ads at once, your website is unreadable
I know she's more of a host than an highlight reader, but I think Michelle Beadle and Scott Stanford could pull of the Dan and Jay act if NBC decided to actually invest in a SportsCenter/Fox Sports Live show at night.
Michelle Beadle is great and deserves to have a network exec who recognizes that, and gives her a show where she can shine.
Absolutely agree ... Beadle has hosting chops. She and Cowherd were a good pairing on SN. She's likeable, attractive (in a non-threatening way) and smart. But Cross-Over was a cross-up from day one. Alas, she's likely headed down the game show, reality show or curling coverage at the Olympics.
I think this is in line with the numbers of FS1's studio shows as well. I've seen all of these various NBCSN/FS1/CBSSN shows called flops at one time or another, but the bottom line is, these channels are not on people's radars yet. It starts with live sports. When your channel is truly a destination for live sports, the viewers will follow to the other shows.
As for The Crossover, I have to assume some kind of turmoil behind the scenes led to this more so than the ratings, or else NBCSN is going to be razing its whole schedule. Personally, I thought the show was pretty entertaining after the format change.
From Debuting on the road, to the original set that looked liked a Public Access High school quiz show & the co-host that was a real life Sheriff Woody It could have failed. But Beadle & Co relaunched & it was very good. A sports show with no fake debates or cramming metrics down your throat. Just a Fun look at sports. and Beadle brought fresh faces to her show. But not once did NBCSN push the show after the changes. No SNF promo or any Crossover mention on NBC. NBC never put any of their voices as guest on Crossover as they did with other shows. Even the @NBCSportsPR account which would promote SportsDash & PFT ignored Crossover. They moved timeslots while Beadle was away & with no promotion til it already happened. NBCSN wanted the show to fail but compared to the others on the network it hasnt so they cancel it anyway while preempting it. No last show, No thank you. Just some vague notion of what they are replacing it with. But hey they kept the elephant killing show.
But i like Max...... LOL oh damn i cant even finish that garbage. He blows. Bring back Beadle 4 letter network.
"...most recently being preempted by America's Cup sailing on a routine basis - including today." Is that why Cowherd spent a whole segment bashing the Cup coverage? Was he sticking up for Beadle?
NBC has managed to take the flaming ineptitude with which they've all but completely ruined Olympic coverage & extend it to an entire sports network. Thankfully, there are more than ample alternatives for the viewing public. I only hope Michelle Beadle manages to escape the ignorant clutches of NBCSN, & soon.
@bhgruy The notion that two people can be worth more together than apart is anathema to the most fundamental notions underlying corporate America. Capitalism itself is predicated on the notion that it is the individual that adds value to an operation. The numerous counterexamples in the media industry (including, besides your examples, Mike and the Mad Dog) will never, ever stop companies from thinking "these two are great together, clearly it must be because of their individual qualities they can replicate for us!" because to think otherwise is to challenge the notions underlying the whole system.
@GTown_Dave What are you talking about? Just because you find her hot, no one was watching her show. She's been all over NBC's coverage for big events - they'll find something for her.
The Crossover format was doomed from the start. No one , and I mean NO ONE, wants to see a show like that. SportsNation is floundering, Crowd Goes Wild is nothing and the LeadOff on CBSSN is equally bad.
@ChrisPress How? Their EPL coverage is outstanding and doing better ratings then a year ago. The NHL set records all last year. They're going to have NASCAR soon. They do a bangup job with horse racing.
So they cancelled a show that no one watched. Who cares?
Good luck with your internship at the NBC Sports Network! I'll be keeping my fingers crossed that you score a coveted position on one of their awesome doe estrus infomercials ... er, hunting shows!
