You know the drill by now.
ESPN forces Chris Berman into a broadcast booth like an elephant into a thimble and everyone on Twitter loses their minds. In all honesty, Berman isn't *that bad* as a football announcer - it's actually better than his cliched Home Run Derby work or having him announce the US Open. Nevertheless, many fans reject Berman's television persona as a play by play announcer simply on its merits. It could be his decades old schtick, no cultural references from after 1987, the fact that he's passing over dozens of more deserving announcers, or the cut of his jib. Whatever the case, whenever Chris Berman hits the broadcast booth it's not going to be a good night for ESPN on social media.
As always, these are Real Tweets from Real People...
Tried muting the game, but even Chris Berman's subtitles were yelling at me.— Matt Miller (@nfldraftscout) September 10, 2013
"I KNOW YOUR PLANS SHOULD INCLUDE ME STAY AWAKE WE GOT GOOD FOOTBALL" was that a threat? did Chris Berman just threaten me?— Lana Berry (@Lana) September 10, 2013
Chris Berman and Ron Burgundy now have equally cogent monologues about the city of San Diego's good points.— Caitlin Kelly (@atotalmonet) September 10, 2013
Chris Berman is yelling about time zones and suddenly all human achievement seems meaningless.— sir broosk (@celebrityhottub) September 10, 2013
WHY THE HELL IS THERE A GARBAGE TRUCK MAKING SO MUCH NOISE OUTSIDE MY WINDOW AT THIS HOUR forget it, that's Chris Berman— Eric Stangel (@EricStangel) September 10, 2013
Not much sleep.. Had horrible nightmare that Chris Berman was doing the play by play of my meal at Applebee's.— Matt Thomas (@SportsMT) September 10, 2013
The Guide to Play-by-Play Commentary by Chris Berman: 25 minutes of Z's, followed by 4 minutes of shouting. And repeat.— Randy Holt (@RandallPnkFloyd) September 10, 2013
Berman's gotta stop using "Who else?" and "Take a guess!" as phrases in play by play.— Will Brinson (@WillBrinson) September 10, 2013
So Berman has only two speeds on commentary: Shriekingly awful and dreadfully boring.— Jeb Lund (@Mobute) September 10, 2013
"Danny 'Jeremiah Was A Bullfrog' Woodhead with the reception from Philip 'Jeremiah Was A Bullfrog' Rivers. /Wet explosion sound." - Berman— David Roth (@david_j_roth) September 10, 2013
I've always enjoyed watching Chris Berman doing anything...he makes me laugh..he has a big compassionate heart and not to mention...his knowlege and insight of whatever sport he is doing...makes more sense than all the other men and women that are around him...though I will say I enjoy watching him more working in the studio.
living proof that you never have to change your material, he and espn are the only ones that still like his schtick
How does Dilfer escape criticism? The man never shuts up, & comes off like he invented the damn game. He's the Tim McCarver of NFL color commentary. I'm almost relieved when Berman starts yelling, as it signals a blessed respite from Trent's insipid blathering.
The Berman hate is something I just can't get on board with. I don't mind him. Yes, his commentary on the home run derby is hard to stomach, but that's an interminable event anyway.
Whomever thought Berman doing play-by-play is a good thing needs to be fired. Too bad it appears it was Berman who thought Berman should be doing play-by-play.
It's bad enough he's ruined pretty much every show he's on with is tired schtick of yelling, mugging and insisting on saying "THE RAAAAAAAAIDAHHHHHS!" every chance he gets. I can't watch the Home Run Derby because of this clown.
On Monday Night Football? He was a slow, boring, confused trainwreck. He succeeded in turning an otherwise exciting fourth quarter last night into a dull, boring dirge.
If anything, it made me appreciate just how good the real sports announcers are. Guys like Al Michaels, Gary Thorne, etc.
Considering he only does play-by-play twice a year, it's not that terrible. He's one of those iconic voices that will one day be fondly remembered
He would be less awful if he would knock off the shticks. I must of rolled my eyes 10 times, and I saw about less than a half of game.
@LarryNiedhammer Compassionate heart? Are you kidding? Have you seen the videos of him berating staff on set and bragging about buying drugs in Canada? Total douche.
