The replacement for Tim McCarver on Fox's MLB telecasts hasn't been named yet. With the long-time commentary partner of Joe Buck leaving Fox after this year's MLB Postseason, the discussion of his replacement has been a popular topic. While we've speculated on possible replacements, Fox has been mum on the subject.
However, SI's Richard Deitsch has learned some of the names that are in the running. You have the obvious choices (John Smoltz, Tom Verducci), the active players who would need to retire and aren't at that stage yet (AJ Pierzynski, Torii Hunter), and of course, the completely insane choice that would drive viewers away by the handful (Harold Reynolds).
That's right - Fox is apparently considering Harold Reynolds for the position. Could you imagine how terrible that would be? Replacing McCarver with a version of himself 30 years younger without any of the experience of actually calling important games would be a disaster and would probably end up being a death knell for anyone enjoying MLB on Fox if they actually went through with it.
For the record, I've said since day one that Smoltz is probably the best choice for the job. He's young (in comparison to McCarver), smart, and witty, and would probably be the best Fox could do given the circumstances. I'd expect an overhaul of Fox's MLB broadcast teams after the season as a result of McCarver's departure, and I wouldn't be surprised at all to see both Smoltz and Verducci get expanded roles. But Reynolds? Keep him away from the commentary booth, please. This would be like ESPN doing something silly like letting Stephen A Smith do color on an NBA game.
Not that I want to see Ron Darling leave the booth for the Mets and i dont think it would interfear but as a part time gig in the world series I think he would be a great choice to replace McCarver. I know he does some tbs games but stfw. I say...Moonlight Ronnie..Moonlight !!!
Buck and Timmah are so bad, that now i actually enjoy hearing their horrible broadcasts. Buck is a very funny dude when hes not commentating (his appearances of Jay Mohr Sports really show how scarcastically funny he is). But his attempts at being calm and collected are not what the biggest moments need, and his Father's patended dead-air during the celebrations is just overdone by him. My favorite Buck-Mccarver moment was last year when the SF fans were chanting BARRY, and mccarver said it reminded him of Barry Manilow and Buck said "or Bonds..." it made for a hilariously awkward moment.
I am sorry he is retiring. The stories he tells are priceless. The one tonight about Roger Maris telling the Cards two months before the World Series that Mickey Lolich was the pitcher to fear or that would be their best (however he said it) not the eventual 30 game winner McLain....WOW, what a piece of baseball history. What memories. He will be missed.
Buck should be replaced not because of performance but because he simply does not call enough games. Let him go to the NFL full time and get a new duo that can be counted on to work every week.
@awfulannouncing Joe Morgan...just kidding.
@awfulannouncing Lane Kiffin?
@awfulannouncing Suzyn Waltman
@awfulannouncing Suzyn Waldman
@_mistermet Always two there are... a master and an apprentice
@awfulannouncing Troy Aikman
@awfulannouncing A coffee cup would be a valid replacement for Tim McCarver. Now if only an area rug would replace Buck we'd be set.
@awfulannouncing A mime would be an upgrade.
@awfulannouncing Fox should bring in Gary, Keith, and Ron
@awfulannouncing how about some talented young broadcaster and not some has been hack former player that bores us all
@awfulannouncing A mannequin with a tape recorder attached that, when played, continually loops inane banter thats unrelated to the game?
@awfulannouncing I would not be surprised if I woke up with my face sewn to the carpet.
@awfulannouncing Harold Reynolds!!!!! WTF?
To give FS1 a little exposure I would hire Gabe Kapler he is very good.Smoltz never says anything bad about anything.
As much as I hate McCarver, I hate joe buck sucks even more. I think with a different play-by-play guy, I could even tolerate McCarver at least a tiny bit.
@NBrinker14 six of one half dozen of the other. It would be better if the replaced him with someone good. And Buck too.
@awfulannouncing Prediction from left field. FOX wants to make big splash - they hire Derek Jeter
There's not a lot of "new" talent out there, and I think that could push Fox into going with a lesser known guy as opposed to a Smoltz, etc
@Joe_TOC Who would you like to see beside Buck? Surprised FOX isn't considering Eck or Leiter. Leiter did good work for them in LCS yrs ago.
@Joe_TOC Why is HR hated so much now? Can you explain the vitriol?
@awfulannouncing How does HR go from Emmy winner to everyone's worst nightmare?
Spent three hours Sunday with MLB monitoring the WC and home field results. Three hours with Harold Reyolds is a bizarre experience. He's sometmes quite funny and insightful from the ex-player's perspective but he's mostly just a rambling nightmare who gets fact after fact wrong.
I think Eric Karros does a fairly good job I feel Fox is gonna try to reach for someone and either it will grow on us or fail big time.
@awfulannouncing I think I'd rather have McCarver...
@awfulannouncing If HR got the job, you could kill me now.
@awfulannouncing Oh please no. How about Bob Brenly or Al Leiter. Anyone but Reynolds.
@ArmandBroady I like Leiter. Smoltz is very good. There's not much untapped talent out there, honestly
@ArmandBroady very stubborn and quite frankly, just not insightful or pleasant to listen to
@ArmandBroady he seemingly takes pride in his ignorance, can't analyze anything without using cliches
@Joe_TOC Brian Anderson, Darling & Smoltz were great during LCS in '11. I didn't expect Cal to be moved into the #1 booth either.
@Joe_TOC If I was TBS, I would've leaned towards Smoltz. A little more entertaining, a bigger name and he's younger than Darling.
@ArmandBroady he's solid, but a little bland, and he's much better at basketball
@ArmandBroady Darling has more experience though, and I think that's what drew them to him. Not sold on EJ as the PBP though
