Alas, as JVG was expressing his anxiety about the big moment, Pop did the unthinkable and gave him a hug. Yes, the Spurs were in the midst of blowing out the Mavs, but usually Popovich is in a worse mood when he's winning than when he's losing for these interviews.
Perhaps he was just showing some love to a fellow member of the coaching fraternity or he was exposing us all to his kinder, gentler self. Maybe next he'll even pose with adorable kittens like Tony La Russa.
