David Menzies urges CFL boycott because they don't use the metric system

Written by Joe Lucia on .

Our Americanized population may not be aware of this, but this Sunday in Toronto, the CFL will be staging the 100th Grey Cup. (Our own Andrew Bucholtz heads up Yahoo's 55 Yard Line CFL blog so go there for coverage.) This year, the Calgary Stampeders will be taking on the Toronto Argonauts and the game is televised Sunday night on NBC Sports Network at 6 PM.

But not all of Canada is enthused by the Grey Cup. David Menzies of Toronto's Sun News Network went on this bizarre rant, calling for a boycott of the Grey Cup (and all things CFL for that matter) because of the CFL's usage of yards on the football field as opposed to meters.

In this bizarre rant, Menzies calls out the "measurement czars" (actual quote) in Canada's national capital for allowing the CFL to continue to use the imperial system for measuring the field of play, and asserts the CFL is an "illegal league." Remember: this is on a national news network, not some sort of niche channel or YouTube.

Tiziano Crudeli reacts to Philippe Mexes' bicycle kick goal

Written by Matt Yoder on .

One of our favorite announcers around the world is Italian soccer commentator Tiziano Crudeli.  Nobody does "crazy old guy soccer fanatic" quite like Tiziano and his fame across the pond has even led to starring roles in commercials for gambling website Ladbrokes.  Crudeli is a huge AC Milan fan, so when Milan defender Philippe Mexes scored this incredible bicycle kick in their Champions League win against Anderlecht this week, I knew we had to find Tiziano's reaction.  Of course, it didn't disappoint.  First the goal, then the commentary...

Your Week 13 College Football Announcing Schedule

Written by Matt Yoder on .

It used to be the day after Thanksgiving was one of the best college football days of the year... but with a lot of those great rivalries dead to conference realignment, the highlight of Friday may be some MACtion.  Maybe that's something to be thankful for after all.  Saturday does feature great historic matchups throughout the day including #1 Notre Dame at USC as the ABC primetime game.  Full schedule after the jump...

Video: Mark Sanchez gives us a legendary football folly

Written by Matt Yoder on .

NFL Films named Jim Marshall's wrong way run in 1964 as the #1 Football Folly in NFL History for their 100 Greatest Follies film in 1994.  Surely this Mark Sanchez highlight from Thanksgiving Night 2012 has to enter the Top Ten, if not provide some stiff competition to Marshall's legendary blooper that has stood at the top of the heap for almost 50 years.

Watch as Sanchez misses a handoff, spins, runs right into the massive derriere of one of his offensive linemen, falls to the ground, fumbles, and gives up a Patriots touchdown.  For the first and only time this year, I'm definitely thankful for the New York Jets.  Everything we've been through this year with the Jetpocalypse has been worth it for this moment.

Maria Sharapova would love to try acting

Written by Dave Kelsey on .

sharapova

As if tennis star Maria Sharapova wasn't already ridiculously talented enough, she has recently stated that she'd love to "act in a movie" one day. While in India for business, Sharapova gave an interview to the Hindustan Times where she said:

“Right now, too many things are happening in life. I’m tied up with my matches, brand associations and several other commitments. But someday, given an opportunity I would love to act in a Hollywood movie.”

There is a very long list of professional athletes that have gone on to respectable acting careers; as well as some that have even just dipped their toes in the acting waters.  Certainly, too many to list here.  Former female MMA star Gina Carano has quit the sport and is now a full-time actress. Current undefeated MMA star Ronda Rousey has also stated interest in acting in a movie one day as well.  But in the tennis world, perhaps Maria's greatest inspiration is Andy Roddick's girlfriend, Brooklyn Decker? The famous model-turned-actress has starred in the hugely budgeted $200 million dollar flop Battleship, as well as the comedy What to Expect When You're Expecting.

Neither movie had very good reviews, so perhaps Maria will have to look elsewhere for acting tips.

In Typical DeAngelo Hall fashion, DeAngelo Hall goes after a reporter

on .

deangeloskins

If DeAngelo Hall wasn't already the most worthless starter in the NFL, maybe his latest off-field incident will change that. The cornerback who has given up more receptions than all but four other defensive backs in the NFL despite his $9 million salary reportedly got into a verbal altercation with Washington Post beat writer Mike Jones earlier this week.

Tony Kornheiser's turkey suit means Thanksgiving is officially here

Written by Matt Yoder on .

The yearly Thanksgiving PTI episode may be my favorite of the year.  Not just for the list of Sports Turkeys of the year, but also for Kornheiser's wardrobe changes that somehow never get old.  Wonder if the secret PTI podcast audio leaked yesterday will get a shout out on tonight's episode.

Video: Bangor, Maine anchors resign live on air

Written by Matt Yoder on .

This video from Bangor, Maine's WVII is one of the rarest sights in television - a news anchor quitting on the air.  In this case, a pair of them.  Anchors Cindy Michaels and Tony Consiglio quit the station at the end of their 6 PM telecast Tuesday night.  The Bangor Daily News cites lengthy disagreements between the station's management and the anchors over the direction of the news as the reason for Michaels and Consiglio walking off.

It may go down as the most polite "take this job and shove it" in television history as the pair thank viewers and talk about what they're going to be doing next.  It's a shame as this kind of moment really had the opportunity to create something special along the lines of a Bill O'Reilly meltdown.  I wish it could have had an element of Qumar Zaman's CM Punk inspired departure from the Lake County Fielders last year.  If Jon Gruden ever publicly announces his departure from ESPN, I'd expect it to be as rosy as this.
