Jon Stewart eviscerates CNN and it is brilliant

Written by Matt Yoder on .

It was an ugly day for broadcast journalists around the country yesterday in the news world.  Several TV networks and print outlets completely botched reports about an arrest made in the Boston Marathon bombing.  The self-proclaimed "most trusted name in news" CNN was once again at the forefront, falling all over themselves with one EXCLUSIVE blunder after another.  Poynter has a great recap of the mass confusion over the arrest reports with the AP, Boston Globe, and Fox News also running with errant reports.

CNN led the charge up the wrong tree with John King's cell phone becoming a black hole of accurate reporting.  For a solid hour yesterday, CNN showed what is possible when a cable news network runs around like a chicken with its head cut off.  Actually, that's an insult to headless chickens, who have their act together compared to CNN.

Enter Jon Stewart and The Daily Show, who delivered the goods with this segment on CNN's foibles Wednesday night...

Chip Caray makes totally original mom's basement joke

Written by Joe Lucia on .

chip

Atlanta Braves TV play by play man Chip Caray is one of the foremost examples of a person having a reputation based solely on his name as opposed to his actual ability. During Wednesday's Braves-Royals broadcast (which was simulcast on MLB Network), Fox Sports South reporter Tom Hart broke down Baseball Prospectus's updated playoff odds, which have the Braves with a 71% chance to make the playoffs as of yesterday, thanks to Atlanta's ten game winning streak.

Seattle Mariners buy controlling interest in Root Sports Northwest

Written by Joe Lucia on .

Teams owning a controlling interesting in their RSN is nothing new. The Yankees, Mets, Red Sox, Astros, and Orioles all belong to that club, while the Nationals, Angels, Rangers, Padres, and (probably) the Dodgers own parts of theirs. Now, a new team has joined the controlling group, and it's not a team you probably envisioned: the Seattle Mariners.

NFL Films tribute to Pat Summerall

Written by Matt Yoder on .

The tributes to Pat Summerall since his passing yesterday afternoon have been pouring out of every corner of the sports world.  It's a tribute to his career that his voice and the way he presented a game had an impact on so many.  While words of praise have come from bloggers, sportswriters, analysts, and fans, those who followed Summerall into the broadcast have also paid their respects.  Al MIchaels appeared on Dan Patrick's show this morning to talk about Summerall's career and Joe Buck tweeted this message about the lead announcer he followed at Fox:

This is the saddest NHL goal call ever

I really wish we could feature local announcers more often at AA.  (That means your e-mail and Twitter tips faithful readers!)  Not because there's a diamond in the rough out there somewhere, but because there is just a GOLD MINE of material in broadcast booths across this great land of ours.  Enter Colorado Avalanche play by play man Mike Haynes.

Adam Scott the actor has grown tired of Adam Scott the golfer jokes

Written by Brad Gagnon on .

For 48 hours, I was under the impression that the state auditor from Parks and Rec won the Masters. Turns out, though, that there are quite a few people on this planet named Adam Scott, and that at least two of them -- three, in fact, if you include this Canadian politician -- are famous.

On Monday night's episode of Conan, Adam Scott the actor -- also known as Ben Wyatt from the hit NBC comedy -- took a moment to express his displeasure with the lame jokes being made regarding the fact that a dude born 7,000 miles away who shares his name happened to win the world's biggest golf tournament.

Of course, Conan only pushed the joke further along by rewarding Scott with a certain jacket.

Will NBC's Premier League plans prove a double-edged sword for MLS?

Written by Andrew Bucholtz on .

timberarmy

NBC rolled out their plans for English Premier League coverage Tuesday, and there's certainly a lot there for soccer fans to like. The amount of coverage they're devoting to the league, between live-game broadcasts, highlights, replays and magazine shows is staggering, and it shows that the network is truly committed to the Premier League product. However, that may prove both beneficial and harmful for MLS, the other main soccer league NBC televises. NBC is carrying an impressive amount of soccer coverage here, and much of it will air on a general-sports network, NBC Sports Network; that's remarkable, and that should certainly have positive effects on soccer across North America to at least a degree. MLS may now seem like a lower priority for NBC, though, and it may be a tough sell to viewers if directly compared to the Premier League. The deal looks like a double-edged sword, one that could cut in MLS' favour but one that could also easily harm the North American league.

Baseball Tonight has a scary mascot

Written by Matt Yoder on .

Much to my horror, I was flipping through channels last night and saw this horrifying creature on ESPN's Baseball Tonight.  It's a giant, happy glove who looks to be the villain of a Stephen King novel... or a misplaced Yo Gabba Gabba character.  The mascot is WebGem Jimmy and he has featured in a commercial for Baseball Tonight.

I can't say I'm an avid viewer of Baseball Tonight, so I'm not sure how new of a character WebGem Jimmy is, but seeing him has ensured I won't be an avid viewer anytime soon.  Did we not learn anything from the disaster that was Scooter?  Ridiculously cheerful mascots are no way to bring the game to new fans.
