Heads Up! Soccer Pundit Hit In Head By Stray Ball

Written by Ryan Yoder on .

Across the pond, the biggest story in sports is the return of soccer hero Thierry Henry to former team Arsenal of the English Premier League.  Henry, currently of the NY Red Bulls of MLS, returned to glory helping Arsenal defeat Leeds in the FA Cup 3rd Round while on loan from the American side.  Heck, the fact that a current MLS player won an important game in England's most prestigious knockout tournament should be a big story on this side of the pond, as well.

Instead, the most talked about clip from the Arsenal/Leeds game may be the following video. Before the match, former Arsenal defender Martin Keown is discussing the match with Robbie Savage, once named the dirtiest player in the EPL.  Hey, it's English Rodney Harrison!  While Keown is about to answer a question, he's rudely interrupted by a stray shot.  True pro that he is, he shakes it off without much bother.  Then again, it's probably not the first time he's taken a ball off the old coconut.

After seeing a cricket commentator suffer this close call and a cricket cameraman wipe out on a Segway, it'll be interesitng to see how the next gaffe from overseas tries to top ones we've already seen.  At this rate, we could start a new weekly feature now that the Dickies and Pammies are on hiatus.  Meanwhile, let's try to find a way for someone to nail Trent Dilfer with several dozen warm-up throws next year on Monday Night Countdown.

Video Of Bobby Hebert And The 48 Second Question

Written by Ben Koo on .

bobby_hebert

Former Saints and Falcons QB Bobby Hebert doesn't give a hoot about the social conventions of being a media personality as a local radio host in New Orleans. As seen in the picture above and the video below, Hebert seems to cherish breaking the most sacred rule of the press box: no cheering.

After an absolute train wreck of a Championship Game, in addition to his son T-Bob Hebert losing his starting role on the offensive line for LSU this season, Hebert once again decided to push the boundaries of proper media etiquette by subjecting Les Miles to 48 seconds of rambling and venting that was nudged towards a conclusion as the moderator asked, "Do you have a question?"

Frankly speaking, I thought Miles was going to tell him to eff off 20 seconds in. Showing good composure, Miles kept calm and even answered Hebert's drawn out question although I'd imagine he was stewing from the line of questioning.

After the jump is the video of the exchange thanks to Youtube user MgoDisney with the transcript below thanks to USA Today along with some tweets from media members who were a combination of entertained and appalled.

Charles Barkley's Saturday Night Live Ratings Gold

Written by Dave Kelsey on .

It looks like Charles Barkely appeals to more than just middle-aged men and Professional Basketball fans.

Last Saturday night Sir Charles hosted SNL for the third time, and viewers tuned in.  Despite the broadcast being delayed more than 15 minutes because of the Lions-Saints NFL playoff game going over a little bit, it still resulted in the highest ratings for the show since January 2011. The show drew a 7.4 rating, just below the Jim Carrey/Black Keys 7.8 rating from last January 8, 2011. Not bad at all for a sports announcing personality.

If you missed our post yesterday, make sure to check out the Barkley skit for the "Post-Game Translator App."  It's high comedy.

And then here's Barkley again, mocking Shaq this time. Pretty well done, if I say so myself:

ESPN's Barry Larkin Elected To Hall Of Fame

Written by Matt Yoder on .

barrylarkinespn

The Hall of Fame announced today that former Reds shortstop Barry Larkin will be the only inductee in the Class of 2012 alongside the late Ron Santo.  Larkin was a 12-time All-Star for the Reds, the winner of the 1995 NL MVP Award, and is one of a dying breed.  He played all 19 years of his career with the Cincinnati Reds.  Larkin had Here's what he had to say about the induction courtesy of USA Today:

"I'm at a loss of words for this time," said Larkin. "I'm incredibly, incredibly moved by this experience, so humbled by being newest member of the Hall of Fame.

"I don't know how things changed, but I am so pleased and happy with everything. I was really surprised by the 86%, but I am so thankful for everyone who voted for me and supported me."

Larkin crossed the 75% threshold needed from voters with an impressive 86.4% vote total, up from just over 60% the year prior.  Jack Morris was the next highest player on the list with 66.7%. Jeff Bagwell and Lee Smith also had over 50%.  It's truly a deserving honor for one of the most underrated players to play the game, who has turned into a very good analyst on television.  (You can listen to our podcast with Barry from early October where he touched on the Hall and other topics here.)

Here's Broncos Radio Announcer Dave Logan Calling The Latest Tebow Miracle

Written by Brady Green on .

cbs tebowing
Big Time Timmy Jim came through in the clutch once again as he connected with Demaryius Thomas for an improbable 80-yard touchdown pass on the opening play of overtime to clinch the Broncos victory. The Broncos overcame a late Steelers comeback and referee Ron Winters lengthy explanation of the new playoff OT rules. I'm ashamed to admit this, but I missed this play live as I flipped to hockey during the commercial break before OT started because I thought a Tebow 80-yard pass would be the last thing to happen in the few seconds that I missed. Fortunately, my neighbor's shrieking through the walls alerted me to flip back immediately. Previously we posted Nantz' call, now we give to you Dave Logan from Broncos radio 850-KOA's call.

"THE CROWD HAS LOST THEIR MINDS" is the obvious highlight to me. I know I did. I immediately logged onto my Facebook, Twitter, Friendster, MySpace and WUPHF accounts and updated all of my status' as "TEBOWWWWWWWW!1!!1!!" to let everyone know what just happened. Tebow advancing in the playoffs sets up an exciting week of Tebowcenter and pundits trolling nonstop. The Broncos will get a rematch with the Patriots next Saturday night in Foxboro.

Friendly Suggestions For Brent Musburger's Call Of The National Championship Game

Written by Matt Yoder on .

brentherbie

Tonight is the National Championship Game between Alabama and LSU.  A year ago, Auburn defeated Oregon to continue the SEC's winning streak in the title game.  But we don't remember that, of course not!  We remember Brent Musburger memorably saying before the game winning field goal attempt, "This is for all the Tostitos."  It was a polarizing moment, but one that has only grown in stature and fame (or infamy as the case may be) over time.  It's actually taken on a bit of a life of its own.  Brent actually talked about the quote (which he had actually used before) in this Q&A with Richard Deitsch of Sports Illustrated.

So with tonight's National Championship Game likely to be another field goal contest, and likely to come down to the wire, we thought it may be helpful to have some friendly suggestions for Brent for lines he can use late in tonight's BCS National Championship Game sponsored by Allstate.  With Allstate as the sponsor, Brent would definitely have to get a little more creative with the call and maybe think it out beforehand (ala Jim Nantz).  If tonight's game came down to a last second play with everything on the line, what could Brent say to top the Tostitos...

Bill Walton Brought His Jedi Mind Tricks To Sacramento

Written by Matt Yoder on .

billwaltontyedye

Bill Walton is one of my absolute favorite color commentators.  I know not everyone will share that opinion, but the big redhead's presence in the booth is something to behold.  I always enjoyed his pairing way back in the day with Steve "Snapper" Jones and even watched him broadcast Clipper games with Ralph Lawler (and that was well before Blake Griffin).  Walton has had some very serious back and health problems the last couple years that have taken him away from national television, but thankfully he appears to be back in relatively good health.

Walton's way with words are unique as they still have that tinge of the seventies, tie-dye t-shirts, and the Grateful Dead.  It's always a Long, Strange Trip when you watch a Bill Walton broadcast.  There are things Bill says that make you shake your head, scratch your head, nod your head, and burst out laughing.  My favorite is the DRAMATICALLY EPIC OVERSTATEMENT said with just enough of a dry sarcasm that Bill knows he's in on the joke.  All in all, it's just fun to listen to Bill Walton do a basketball game.

So, when I heard Bill Walton was making an appearance in the Sacramento Kings TV booth alongside play by play man Grant Napear, I knew I had to tune in to enlighten the nation and the world with the wisdom of one Bill Walton...

via jeskeets "Creativity. Imagination. Determination. Flexibility. Adaptability."

One of my favorite Walton traits.  Throw random word combinations together like Jackson Pollack splashing paint on the canvas.  You know Bill Walton would crush you in Words With Friends.

via sharapovasthigh "NBA basketball is the ultimate celebration of health."

This is coming from a man who has undergone at least 36 orthopedic surgeries and attended at least 650 Grateful Dead concerts.  Think about that.

"The best part about basketball competition is the mental and emotional aspects.  The physical levels are relatively equal... to be a champion, you've got to be the smartest guys on the floor."

What other analyst in sports would talk about the mental and emotional aspects of the game?  The scariest part about this quote though is Bill was referencing mental virtuoso DeMarcus Cousins.

"If you just came back from the Mars Hotel and looked at Big Baby you'd say there's no way this guy can be a successful player, but with his balance, ingenuity, his tenacity and his willingness to mix it up physically... he reminded me when he first joined the league of Charles Barkley, but he doesn't have that lift that Barkley had.  Barkley was such a remarkable physical specimen, power, finesse and touch and anger and explosiveness."

1) Rise up fellow Deadheads for the Mars Hotel reference!  2) I've never once thought of Big Baby and ingenuity in the same sentence, unless we're talking about his arts and crafts collection.  3) Walton refers to Charles Barkley as a remarkable physical specimen, hard for anyone to fathom if you've seen this.

"The previous possession was a thing of beauty.  Picasso.  Monet."

This was describing a Jason Thompson layup.  Really.

"Players make plays, plays dont make players."

Bill just lost Tim McCarver with that one.

"Tebow's a player like Jimmer Fredette's a player."

This quote came after Bill was informed of the Broncos defeating the Steelers in overtime.  Jimmer scored 2 points in 14 minutes, so I suppose if we're talking about Week 17 Tebow this is an apt comparison.  And in fairness to Bill, they are indeed both players.

"You might want to tell Hedo Turkoglu that Tyreke Evans is righthanded and will continue to be so throughout the rest of this game at least."

I stood and applauded at this quote.

"DeMarcus Cousins head to head here with Dwight Howard in the closing moments where legends are maintained or the course of history is changed!"

This is the greatest analysis in the history of western civilization!!  These Bill Walton quotes will change your life forever for the better!!  Throw it down big man, throw it down!!

Video: Tim Tebow's Overtime Game Winning Touchdown Pass To Demaryius Thomas

Written by Matt Yoder on .

Everyone had Tim Tebow throwing an 80 yard touchdown pass to Demaryius Thomas on the first play of overtime for a Broncos victory over the Steelers, right?  In spite of all the Broncos' heroics this season, that kind of finish was miraculous even by Tim Tebow's standards.  And this touchdown from Tebow to Thomas came in the first ever game of the new overtime rules in the NFL.  Thank goodness Phil Simms didn't have to explain that at length to us.  Here's the video of TEBOW TIME...

After his season and all the media scrutiny and everything revolving around TebowMania, I'm legitimately happy for Tim Tebow and the Denver Broncos.  That was a cool moment and an amazing play made by Demaryius Thomas that shouldn't go unrecognized.  I'm not going to let Skip Bayless' trolling ruin what is a great sports story and neither should you.  Enjoy it (unless you're a Steelers fan that is).

Next Saturday night, Tebow and the Broncos travel to New England to face the Patriots in what may be the highest rated non Super Bowl in league history.
