SEC Network: The danger of ESPN eating itself

Written by Alen Kenney on .

The SEC’s poorly kept secret – at one timed dubbed “Project X,” even though it had nothing to do with teaching chimpanzees to fly planes – became ever more poorly kept Friday when John Ourand of the SportsBusiness Journal revealed that the plans for the SEC television network will be unveiled next week.

Launching the network will ensure that the country’s toughest football conference will continue swimming in money for the foreseeable future. As Ourand notes, however, ESPN and the conference now face the challenge of gaining carriage for the new channel.

We’ve witnessed a series of protracted stand-offs between the networks and cable providers of late over the start of such channels. DirecTV, for instance, doesn’t have the Pac-12 Network yet. A smattering of providers have picked up the Longhorn Network from ESPN. Time Warner Cable went without the NFL Network for years before a deal was reached between the two.

Vancouver Sun stands by Richard Sherman Adderall quote, adds video

Written by Andrew Bucholtz on .

"I was misquoted!" has become a key line of defense for many athletes once they realize they've said something that's going to cause a stir, and sometimes, they even appear to be right. That doesn't seem to be the case with oft-controversial Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman, though. Sherman got himself into a bit of trouble this week, as his Tuesday appearance at Cambridge Elementary School in Surrey, B.C. to hand out NFL Play 60 apparel and a technology grant (part of NFL Canada's Take A NFL Player To School initiative) resulted in him dispensing a controversial quote as well. However, unlike most cases where a quote comes into dispute, there's solid evidence that Sherman actually said it.

'42' review: A storybook tale of Jackie Robinson breaking baseball's color barrier

Written by Ian Casselberry on .

42movie.warnerbros.com

Ed Note: This movie review of the Jackie Robinson biopic 42 comes via our friends at The Outside Corner.

A movie like 42 can be a tricky proposition for a filmmaker. Should the movie tell Jackie Robinson's life story or focus on a particular period of his life, presumably the one that most defines him?

Writer-director Brian Helgeland wisely opted for the latter in his film, recounting the events surrounding Robinson becoming the first black man to play in the major leagues and alluding to other events in his life (such as being court-martialed while in the Army, a story that warranted its own TV movie) throughout the script.

Yet Helgeland doesn't just tell Robinson's story here. In fact, some might think he doesn't delve deep enough into the man, choosing instead to depict the circumstances he was placed in.

We do get an idea of what made Robinson special, how he was able to keep a stiff upper lip and reign in his emotions in the face of horrifying racial prejudice and hatred. The movie would be an utter failure otherwise. (Just in case you don't comprehend when Robinson might be viewed as heroic, the camera tilted upward at him and the swelling strings of the musical score lets you know.)

Much of the credit for that should go to Chadwick Boseman, who portrays Robinson. I had never seen him in anything else before, but after this performance, we'll surely be seeing more of him on the big and small screens. Boseman's Robinson comes across as defiant, stoic, quietly angry and, perhaps most importantly, charismatic.

The Daily Show takes down the NCAA

Written by Matt Yoder on .

ncaa

The NCAA has become a lucrative pinata for sports columnists, lawyers, pundits, bloggers, former student-athletes, school presidents, Jay Bilas, and now Comedy Central.  The Daily Show took their brand of snark, humor, and incisive commentary and blew up the NCAA's world like they were Brutus Buckeye coming over the middle of the field.

In just six minutes, The Daily Show and correspondent Aasif Mandvi perfectly captured the absurd hypocrisy and illogicality of the NCAA in interviews with Minnesota wrestler Joel Bauman and former UCLA basketball Ed O'Bannon.  SHOCKINGLY, the NCAA declined to comment on camera, further exposing them to a vicious roasting from the Daily Show...
