Heidi Watney Out At NESN, Joining Lakers

Written by Packey on .

heidi

Boston Red Sox play-by-play announcer Don Orsillo re-signed for four more years, continuing his partnership with analyst Jerry Remy.

Yeah, yeah, that's nice, but what about that bodacious blonde Heidi Watney, you ask?

Well, according to the same release, she will not be returning to the Red Sox next year, leaving the organization with nothing redeeming but beer and fried chicken:

Watney, whose contract had also expired, is leaving to work for Time Warner Cable in southern California. Time Warner Cable lured the Los Angeles Lakers away from Fox Sports West and KCAL-TV last February with a landmark 20-year deal said be worth in excess of $2.5 billion.

Watney will work as a sideline reporter on the Time Warner Cable Laker telecasts, beginning with the 2012-13 season. She had worked on NESN's Red Sox telecasts and other Red Sox programming for the past four seasons. Her new job allows her to return to her native California.

The end of Watney's time as a Red Sox field reporter is said to have been a mutual move so the former Miss California could be closer to home. Of course, there were the rumors that she 'dated' players during her time with the team, Jason Varitek in particular, which may have been a determining factor in the end. Just last month, when the Red Sox were being blown up, Watney apparently went against company policy by commenting on the resurfaced rumors. She RT'd Red Sox related news as recent as Tuesday and hasn't updated her profile's info. When someone asked her for an update on her contract status this week, Watney responded that she was on vacation and told people via hashtag not to jump to conclusions. Hmmm.

If only Boston could find a way to get rid of Dan Shaughnessy:

Fox NFL Sunday Robot Cleatus Jeopardizes His Own Action Figure Sales In Sexual Harassment Scandal

Written by Blythe Brumleve on .

cleatustoy

If you were to say to someone “hey you know who Cleatus is?” Their response would probably be “that guy from the Simpsons with 37 kids?” Or if you happen to live in the South, you might actually know a few Cleatuses that run ‘round these parts.

Unfortunately for this article, both of those responses are wrong as we are talking about the robot Fox Sports so affectionately loves, who might be involved in a sexual harassment case just as his action figures are hitting the shelves for the holiday season.

Cleatus the Robot was introduced in 2007 and named by a viewer in a contest (any guesses as to what part of the country he is from!?!) and has been the official mascot of Fox NFL Sunday ever since. He’s become somewhat popular. In fact, other characters have been spun off such as Scooter, the short-lived annoying MLB baseball, and Digger, the NASCAR animated gopher.

But Cleatus’ popularity may soon come to a crashing halt at the worst time of the busy shopping year because it seems he can’t keep his robot hands off a very attractive toaster, got caught shooting up a night club, and pending a paternity test could have fathered a cyborg out of wedlock... (video slightly NSFW)

Cleatus appears to have gone all Herman Cain on us, it’s a sad day for robot fans everywhere.

Ray Bentley Just Described A WR's Effort As Being "Laissez-Faire."

Written by Brady Green on .

It's the middle of the week, so that of course means it's time for the return of the MAC on the ESPN networks. Currently, Ohio/BGSU is on the uno and Western Michigan/Miami (Ohio) is on the deuce. I flipped on the Ohio/BGSU game and this clip I recorded was literally the first thing I heard from Ray Bentley. Yep, you heard that right. He described Ohio wide receiver Mario Dovell's effort as being "laissez-faire," or, in his case "LOZZAY FAIR." Since I missed the play, I have no idea what incredibly strange thing Mario Dovell was apparently doing. What I will tell you though is that hearing that sissy-French talk made me spit out my freedom fries almost spoiling this game of AMERICAN football for me. At least that namby-pamby RUGBY punt was blocked by a patrotic Falcon thus righting everything in the world.

For those of you who come to Awful Announcing for the purposes of learning, here's a brief definition of laissez-faire and an insufferable Frenchman prounouncing it correctly.

Irish Rugby Announcer Goes Crazy

Written by Dave Kelsey on .

Check out this clip of an Irish rugby announcer going crazy. Ronan O'Gara dramatically kicks a drop goal to win Munster's match with Northampton after the final siren. This is understandably a favorable outcome to the Irish fans of Munster and this announcer, Michael Corcoran. In fact, he might be speaking a different language or making up words entirely.

I have no idea what he's saying halfway through the video, and I bet you don't either. But that certainly won't stop me from enjoying it nonetheless. Just listen and smile.

Your Week 11 Pammies Winners And Updated Standings

Written by Matt Yoder on .

pamwardchronicles

It was only a matter of time until the Penn State scandal spilled over into the Pammies.  This week, brave ESPN reporter Tom Rinaldi takes top spot for a quote from the leader's PSU-Nebraska coverage.  Reporting in front of ominous bushes and sleepy, peaceful students is no easy task ya know.  As for the rest of this week's winners, Shaun King and Craig James populate the rest of the top five.  The envelope please...

10) "The Gamecocks lead it by nine." - Tim Brando (via Dascenzo) It was 14-3.

9) "Depth is a problem on defense all over the Southeast Conference, especially on defense." - Gary Danielson (via TheBlightning)

8) "He does a good job of reading, coming out of his zone and splitting the defenders on the screen. What I mean by defenders is the big offensive linemen." -Chris Spielman (via TheBlightning)

4) "This is just out of QB sneak range. It's 3rd and 7." - Craig James (via sctvman)

3) "I'm no math major. 6 out of 10 is 60%." - Craig James (via BloggerJustinF) on the number of Big Ten stadiums named after people who served in the armed forces.  There are 12 Big Ten teams.

2) "Boise doesn't lose at home. You have to beat them" - Shaun King (via SoonerCharley)

1"Fans are wearing blue in honor of child support, err, child abuse" - Tom Rinaldi(via AlexFromBuffalo)

While Boxing Fades, UFC's Future Is Bright Thanks To Fox Debut

Written by Matt Yoder on .

Above you can see the entire UFC Heavyweight Championship fight on Fox from Saturday night, where Junior Dos Santos defeated Cain Velasquez to win the belt.  The fight lasted all of 64 seconds, but provided a decisive, exciting knockout finish.  The same can't be said for Manny Pacquiao's bout with Juan Manuel Marquez, also on Saturday night.  Pacquiao won a questionable decision, which seems to be the rule rather than the exception in boxing.  How many boxing fans have grown tired of the neverending supply of controversies, disappointments, teases, and fractures?  In fact, the highlight of Pacquiao/Marquez fight night may in fact have been the role of this strategically placed sombrero.

The contrast of trajectories between UFC and boxing couldn't be more apparent than Saturday night.  On one hand, you had the UFC making its debut in primetime network television.  Sure, it wasn't the first MMA appearance in primetime, but this was finally the time for MMA's premier organization to take centerstage.  This wasn't a Youtube fighter trying to make a name for himself in a fourth rate bout, Dos Santos v Velasquez was the real deal.  It was also a winner in the ratings.  Here's the numbers from MMAJunkie...

With updated figures, network executives say this past weekend's first-ever UFC on FOX event scored a 3.1 household rating and an average audience of 5.7 million viewers.

That's up for sharply from the initial estimates of 4.64 million viewers.

According to FOX officials, the Nov. 12 broadcast was the highest-rated event in UFC history, and once final figures are in, it's expected to win the adults 18-34, adults 18-49, men 18-34 and men 18-49 demographics.

5.7 million viewers for a single 64 second fight is fairly impressive.  And hey, it's almost three times as long as Armen Keteyian's interview with Mike McQueary!  But perhaps more importantly, it's winning those young demos that will have Fox and the UFC popping the champagne bottles.  Networks obsess over winning those young/male demos and the fight delivered.  And really, this could only be the beginning for Dana White and UFC...

Gerry Sandusky, Baltimore Ravens Announcer, Is Not Related To The Alleged Pederast

Written by Packey on .

Besides feeling awful for the children (think of the children!) whose lives were forever scarred by a demented pervert, I kind of feel bad for the same-named people in the world who have also had their family name somewhat tarnished. It happened in the Casey Anthony case and it's happening with Baltimore Ravens' radio announcer Gerry Sandusky, whose name is close enough that it made Dick Ebersol flinch after he introduced himself and it's getting him some pretty nasty reactions from people who don't know any better. And he's not even Jerry with a J.

gerrysandusky

Of course, his parents didn't know that a high-profiled Jerry Sandusky was going to start showering with little boys, which is why you have to have some sympathy for the innocent people who unluckily come into sharing a name with a murderer or a pedophile. That's the kind of misfortune parents who name their kids Hitler or Aryan Nation should wind up having.
