Dan Le Batard to Get Swollen and Sweaty Every Weekday on ESPN2

Written by mike vitiello on .

If you can't get enough South Florida from the Heat Index alone, breathe easy, because the Worldwide Runner-up is expected to confirm this week that 790 the Ticket's Dan Le Batard will be hosting a regular 30 minute TV show next fall.

Le Batard’s multi-media career will take its biggest step yet when ESPN2 announces next week that it will give him his own TV show, from 4 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays beginning Sept. 12.

The title: Dan Le Batard is Highly Questionable. The name was suggested by Erik Rydholm, executive producer of Pardon the Interruption.

Le Batard will continue hosting his radio show but will cut back from four hours to three (probably 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., though that remains in discussions). He will tape the TV program a short time before airing, which will allow him to do his radio show when the TV show airs.

“I won’t be live. I drown in a puddle of my own sweat in live television,” Le Batard said. “Nobody wants to see that. Well, actually some people might want to see that.”

-Miami Herald

PTI fans who have seen Le Batard called up to fill in for a vacationing Kornheiser/Wilbon probably already know that 1. he is prone to sweating on camera and 2. he is "highly questionable." But as anyone who gets the appeal of PTI's format understands, there is value in having a bloated contrarian espouse his opinion for others to argue with. I don't know if this show will get off the ground, or how it will affect the incumbent at 4:00, SportsNation, but if it means cutting down on the daily serving of Colin Cowherd by half an hour, I'm all for it.

Full disclosure: As a native Miamian, I listen to the Le Batard show (which is barley a sports show btw) regularly on 790, and my only complaint about the show is that he can be insanely repetitive. Like sentence to sentence. What I mean is that Dan Le Batard, South Florida AM radio host and Miami Herald columnist Dan Lebatard, is repetitive - that is to say he repeats himself constantly. He says things, and then he re-says them, reader. He then solicits a response from co-host Stugotz by repeating the same statement a third or even a fourth time while Stugotz forms an opinion, while also making sure to say the name Stugotz at least a couple of times throughout this process. I guess what I'm trying to say is the guy is repetitive. He repeats himself, if I'm not being clear.

Maybe the fact that his TV show is scheduled to run just 30 minutes and will be taped by cutting an hour off of his radio show will help him avoid leaning on that crutch. Plus it means that net-net, Le Batard haters get to live in a world where Dan is on the airwaves for 30 minutes less every day, so it's a potential win-win for everyone.

Sage Steele, Squirrels, & Jerking Off... I Wish I Was Making This Up

Written by Matt Yoder on .

Yesterday, a squirrel wreaked havoc in the Padres bullpen yesterday.  San Diego bullpen catcher Justin Hatcher finally caught the ferocious little devil and in spite of a bite that broke the skin, released the creature into the evergreen trees at Denver's Coors Field.  Seems like a pretty innocent story, right?  Kinda cute like that turtle diving into the lake at TPC yesterday (that's two animal stories in a row for us by the way).  Well, unfortunately that little squirrel will now live forever in infamy thanks to SportsCenter's Sage Steele.  Check out this video from our friends at SportsGrid...

"It bit him and wouldn't let go... the squirrel was hanging from his thumb, eventually he got a towel, jerked him off there, and then... ya know... rabies..."

At least Hatcher was considerate enough to use a towel.  You'd hate to go back to catching in the bullpen with that mess not cleaned up.  I think I knew what Sage meant... Hatcher wanted to jerk the squirrel off of his hand with a towel... I think... however, I'm much more content with the way she told the story.  I could go on with this, but it's a Sunday.  I'll just stop there and leave the nut jokes to our diligent readers...

VIDEO: Turtle Takes Olympic Dive At TPC Sawgrass, World Rejoices

Written by Matt Yoder on .

It was a slow Saturday afternoon in sports with absolutely nothing happening.  (Perhaps it was good timing in the middle of my grad school finals.)  Thankfully, Round 3 of the Players Championship finally came back from a rain delay and we were treated to one of my favorite videos of the year so far.  Watch this lovable little turtle take a death defying leap into the lake by the 16th green at TPC Sawgrass.  I would certainly give it at least a 9.2 out of 10, the flip and entry was graceful and it was a brave jump/fall/dive.  I've always been a fan of those naturey type Discovery Channel things, so this brings together two of my favorite areas of life.  I would love to hear Gus Johnson announce Man vs Wild.  Rory McIlroy tweeted a sideways video of it initially, but thankfully a good Samaritan on Youtube has provided a right-side-up version.  Enjoy!

Canadian Sports Reporter Fired For Same Sex Marriage Tweet

Written by Matt Yoder on .

This is a story that not many sports fans in the United States may be aware of, but really stunned me when I looked into it.  Rogers Sportsnet fired anchor Damian Goddard because of a Tweet regarding same-sex marriage.  The entire controversy began when the Twitter account Uptown Sports Tweeted this regarding Sean Avery's appearance in a video supporting gay marriage...

Very sad to read Sean Avery's misguided support of same-gender "marriage". Legal or not, it will always be wrong.

Avery took part in the New Yorkers for Marriage Equality Campaign.  Uptown's Tweet was authored by Todd Reynolds, Vice President of Uptown Sports, a management company that represents several NHL players.  Damian Goddard comes into the picture through his support of Reynolds...

I completely and whole-heartedly support Todd Reynolds and his support for the traditional and TRUE meaning of marriage.

The backlash towards Goddard was swift.  The Rogers Sportsnet Twitter account was hit with criticism of Goddard's Tweet.  According to the timeline on May 10, on eight occasions Rogers Tweeted responses with the following message...

"Today's tweet from Damian Goddard does not reflect the views of Rogers Sportsnet."

The next step in the story was Rogers firing Goddard and releasing this statement...

"Damian Goddard is no longer with Rogers Sportsnet. Mr. Goddard was a freelance contractor and in recent weeks it had become clear that he is not the right fit for our organization," Dave Rashford, Sportsnet's director of communications, said in a statement.

Goddard followed with this Tweet...

gonna spend some time with the wife now. to be clear, damian goddard's tweets reflect the views of damian goddard. peace, folks!

Obviously, same-sex marriage is an incredibly sensitive issue both culturally and politically.  This story has so many layers that it deserves to be dissected step by step.  Let me be clear and blunt - this analysis isn't to say who's right and who's wrong about gay marriage, but to analyze how the story developed and the impact of Twitter and the sports media...

Breaking News: ESPN's Matthew Barnaby Charged With Domestic Violence

Written by Matt Yoder on .

barnaby

Another day, another ESPN personality in trouble with the law.  This time, it's hockey analyst Matthew Barnaby, who was arrested tonight on charges of domestic violence in a story that is just breaking within the hour.  Barnaby has been an ESPN hockey analyst since 2008 and one of the few hockey analysts actually visible across the ESPN family of networks.  Here's some details in a report by WIVB in Buffalo...

Former Buffalo Sabre Matthew Barnaby was arrested Friday night, charged with domestic violence.

Amherst Police responded to a location at 6:15 p.m. and found serious damage to property. The location is being kept private to protect two female victims, who police say were not injured.

The former right winger was arrested and charged with second degree criminal contempt, harassment, second degree criminal trespass, and second degree criminal mischief. Police say after leaving the location, he made angry phone calls, and Barnaby has also been charged with aggravated harassment via a cell phone.

For the record, Barnaby had been romantically linked with fellow ESPNer Michelle Beadle in prior months.  In fact, Beadle confirmed to the Big Lead in March that the pair had been dating since Fall 2010.  As the WIVB report makes clear, details are non-existent to protect two unnamed female victims and it's not fair to speculate on any more information until more facts are available.  ESPN has never been the most forthright entity in terms of their discipline of on-air personalities, but needless to say this report does not look good for Barnaby and you would expect the network to act swiftly.  We'll have more details as the story develops.

***Update - For what it's worth, The Big Lead is reporting that Beadle is not involved in this story.  It is the same site that also confirmed Beadle's relationship with Barnaby from her directly.

***Update II (Saturday Afternoon) - Buffalo News has more details on Barnaby's arrest and more information regarding the case on the day after the story broke...

Former Buffalo Sabres player Matthew Barnaby pleaded not guilty today in Amherst Town Court to five charges, including one felony, following a Friday evening domestic incident involving his estranged wife and another adult...

Barnaby faces charges of felony criminal mischief, criminal contempt, criminal trespass, harassment and aggravated harassment. The most serious charge, felony criminal mischief, carries a possible prison term of up to four years in jail, if he were convicted.

ESPN's report on Barnaby pleading not guilty to the charges includes their original comment from Friday night - "We just learned of this so it would be inappropriate for us to comment."

Mike Greenberg Spooked By Friday The 13th Prank

Written by Matt Yoder on .

Well, it is Friday the 13th, a fact that I did not realize earlier tonight when I tweeted this regarding Justin Verlander throwing another no-hitter through 5.1 IP against the Royals.  It was just a harmless tweet... what could it really do???  Of course, since it is in fact Friday the 13th, Verlander allowed a hit approximately 13 seconds later.  Sorry, Detroit.  So, to raise everyone's spirits, I share with you ESPN's Mike Greenberg screaming like a Scream Queens contestant thanks to one of the Mike & Mike staffers dressing like some sort of cross between Rey MysterioDracula, and Nacho Libre.  By the way, if you're looking for a scary movie to watch on Friday the 13th, I recommend Nacho Libre.  That thing was frighteningly bad.  In fact, I would rather listen to Colin Cowherd narrate Pride and Prejudice than watch that atrocity again.  I'm rambling now... let's just enjoy the clip before I jinx something else...

Tiger Withdraws from Players Championship, Dan Hellie Speculates At Least 2 Whores Involved

Written by mike vitiello on .

Congratulations, casual golfer! You could have had a chance to beat Tiger Woods yesterday at the Players Championship, where the eagerly anticipated "Tiger becoming Tiger again" didn't quite happen. Woods said he felt his problematic left knee buckle during his first tee shot and was barely able to walk through the front nine, shooting a 42(!) in the process.

"The knee acted up, and then the Achilles followed after that, and then the calf started cramping up," Woods said. "Everything started getting tight, so it's just a whole chain reaction."

There were also some good ol' fashioned horrible shots which were unrelated to the leg.

"It grabbed me on the tee shot there. But the pitch shots weren't [due to injury]. Those were just bad pitch shots. Those were just awful."

Tiger Woods had 99 problems at the tournament, but for the first time in a long time, a female was not among them. Somebody tell that to Dan Hellie of WRC in Washington D.C.

In Mr. Hellie's defense, Tiger is probably knee deep in hookers right now. Look, I've shot more than my share of 42/9's in my day and it ain't pretty. You don't just chalk that up as a loss, hop in the Escalade, and go pick up the kids from mommy's. You drink heavily at the turn, leave with half your clubs, head straight to the Jiggly Room to throw down a couple more vodka-Gatorades and find a lady of the night to lick your wounds.

Marv Albert to CBS?

Written by Ryan Yoder on .

steve-kerr-marv-albert-2011-lg

The AA wake over Gus Johnson's CBS departure has finally almost lifted.  The sun hasn't stopped coming up in the mornings and Gus is finally out from under Jim Nantz's thumb.  Meanwhile, things at the network he left behind might be brightening as well with rumors in the New York Daily News suggesting Marv Albert could fill Gus's bombastic shoes.

According to the NYDN's Bob Raissman, Marv is in talks with CBS to fill the vacancy in college basketball and NFL coverage left by Gus Johnson's move to FOX.  If this move does come to fruition, it is undoubtedly a home run for CBS's sports coverage.  While we all love what Gus Johnson brought to the table, without question Marv Albert is on the Mount Rushmore for greatest announcers of all time.  Come to think of it....why hasn't anyone been inspired by AA to have a website dedicated to Non-Awful Announcing.  They can have their own Mount Rushmore banner with Marv, Dick Enberg, Mel Allen, and Pam Ward (kidding!).

Of course, Albert has proven himself throughout his distinguished career as the preeminent basketball announcer of generations past and present.  Any fears of his transition from the NBA to college basketball were squelched with his superb performance for CBS/Turner in his partnership with Steve Kerr during March Madness.  There's no doubt Marv's gravitas would be a big plus to add to CBS's regular season college basketball.

While Marv is well-known as a basketball announcer, he's no stranger to football either.  In the last decade Albert worked Monday Night Football on radio for Westwood One for seven years.  You can click the link here to get a taste of Marv's football chops from Super Bowl XLIV, courtesy of SI's Hot Clicks.  One would also think if Albert joined CBS's NFL crew he wouldn't be subjected to working with Steve Tasker every week on games like Bills/Dolphins like Gus Johnson had to endure.  Albert's move to CBS is only rumor for now, but fans around the country would surely not mind hearing an emphatic YES! every now and then on the network next year.  And while Gus Johnson is a favorite of many, there's no doubt a legend like Marv Albert would be an upgrade, which is a win for CBS and for fans of not-awful announcing.
