David Feherty Gets Hit In The Groin

Written by Matt Yoder on .

There may be nothing in the universe that is funnier than a man getting hit in the groin... unless it happens to you of course.  But, when that unique and momentary pain and misery is unleashed on another human being, it is hilarious.  When that man is CBS golf announcer David Feherty, wearing a ridiculous target suit, being hit by a little kid, we reach the stratosphere of guys getting hit in the groin videos...

This video is definitely near the top of the list for all-time groin shots, but it still can't touch #1 - the legendary Hans Moleman.  I think the following clip may be one of the defining moments of my childhood.  And, who better to summarize why it's so funny than Homer Simpson himself...

"But, the ball, his groin, aha, it works on so many levels!"

Wise words my friend, wise words.

Erin Andrews Will Work The Oscars for ABC

Written by Matt Yoder on .

erinandrews

As a part of her new deal with ESPN signed last summer, Erin Andrews was given additional opportunities and TV time.  These included hosting an extra hour of College Gameday and becoming an ABC crossover personality by appearing on Good Morning America.  Well, now EA is going Hollywood by covering the Oscars with former ESPNer Robin Roberts.  From USA Today...

The Mouse House is making good on its promise to Andrews to allow to her to cover both sports for ESPN and entertainment for sister network ABC.

Andrews bashers won't like it but she's working with Robin Roberts on Good Morning America's coverage of the 83rd Annual Academy Awards on Sunday night. There she was in Hollywood Friday morning providing a behind-the-scenes hit for GMA viewers on the logistics for the Governor's Ball.

Andrews bashers?  Are there actually people out there that don't like Erin Andrews?  I suppose I haven't met one yet.  Good for her to continue to expand her reporting and TV work by breaking into Hollywood.  The red carpet experience must beat being creeped out by thousands of drunk college dudes on a regular basis.  Erin should do us all a favor while she's there and take out Joan Rivers' scary robot corpse once and for all.  Seriously, that thing could be the star of the next Saw franchise.  Here's a behind the scenes video with EA from Good Morning America...

In terms of Best Picture, I've got to go with The King's Speech. By far the best movie I've seen this year and maybe one of my favorite of all-time.  Honestly, I thought it was going to be boring too but it ended up being a terrific movie.  There's just something about a stuttering English monarch that speaks to me in a profound way.

There's Something Odd About The New Dick Vitale Hooters Commercial

Written by Brady Green on .

No, it's not that Dick Vitale has come down with "basketball fever," that is to be expected come this time of the year. It's also not that Nurse Ashleigh goes over the doctors head in diagnosing Dick's illness. Nor is it that onion rings will cure this mysterious "basketball fever." To me, it is most certainly is the appearance of the Schwab as an extra pumping his fist in delight at Hooters with Dickie V. It's nice to know that ESPN lets him out of their dungeon every once in a while for purposes other than reciting ABA all-star game MVP winners.

Minor League Hockey Announcer Suspended... By Himself!

Written by Matt Yoder on .

springfieldjrblues
What is it about hockey announcers that are so bizarre?  Earlier this year there was Howie Rose and his dissing of the Islanders and incredibly awkward on-air apology, there's Don Cherry (just re-signed by CBC in Canada) and his crazy suits and crazier opinions, Randy Moller and his incredible pop culture references, and then there's the craziness of guys like Jack Edwards.  However, this may be the creme de la creme of bizarre hockey announcer stories.

From Puck Daddy comes the story of Mike Hickey, announcer for the Springfield Junior Blues of the NAHL.  Who knew they even existed, right?  As the PD article explains, things got a little chippy in a game between the Jr. Blues and the Topeka Roadrunners.  That's where things only begin to get interesting.  Hickey became enraged with some of the tactics of the Roadrunners and unleashed these gems during his broadcast (unfortunately no video/audio)...

"In the middle! With the long hair! Jerk! Greasy little punk!"

"Oh, c'mon, you can't hold! [Silence] Oh, boy. That's one way to get around him: Hold your opponent until your teammate can get by. This game is deteriorating into a love-fest. Typical Topeka game. Let's go Blues."

"We got another period of this. And with Topeka's history, it's only going to get worse.

"They're disgusting. You heard it here first. They're disgusting. But the Junior Blues will take care of business, I gar-run-tee."

Even at the Junior Hockey level, crimes against blatant announcing homerism are noticed quickly.  Apparently, Hickey and the Jr. Blues got plenty of complaints from Topeka fans about being referred to as disgusting.  Hickey then took the remarkable step of suspending himself from broadcasting for his comments during the game!  Maybe that's how things work in minor league hockey, can't say that I'm an expert.  I don't recall a broadcaster at any level suspending himself for homeristic comments made during a broadcast (yes, I might have made up a word), but hopefully this sets a trend throughout sports broadcasting.  When watching your team play in a road/neutral game, there can be nothing more annoying than an announcer who is an insufferable homer.  Sure, Hickey's comments were probably out of line, but it's a noble action to suspend yourself and realize when your homerism goes too far.  Then again, maybe at 67, Hickey should have known where the line was drawn in the first place.

What do you think, do you like your home team's announcers to play the aggressive homer card?  Or, do you prefer the straight down the middle perspective with a tiny slant towards the home team?  Let us know in the discussion below and the poll on the main page.  At least this story gives me an excuse to the most entertaining bit of homerism I have ever seen!

Here's Tom Hart's Call Of Ridiculous Banked In Buzzer Beating Three In UM/Wisconsin Game

Written by Brady Green on .

Michigan and Wisconsin just played one of the least beautiful offensive games of the Big Ten Season. It ended like you'd expected it to, a banked in three pointer at the buzzer for a Wisconsin win, 53-52. The shot was hurled up by Josh Gasser, probably Wisconsin's 4th option on the play. Tom Hart provides the call in this clip. Still, it's hard to not feel somewhat cheated that a game on the Big Ten Network that came down to a three at the buzzer didn't have Gus Johnson calling the action.

Scottie Pippen Is Your Newest Former Star Player Turned Analyst

Written by Matt Yoder on .

CSN Chicago announced today that former Bulls legend Scottie Pippen will join their broadcast team for this Friday's game and for all playoff games televised on CSN.  It will be interesting to see how good Pippen is as a broadcaster, considering a lot of great all-time players have tried and failed as analysts.  From CSN Chicago...

“Scottie Pippen is most certainly one of the greatest players in NBA history whose knowledge and passion of the game is second to none,” said James J. Corno, President of Comcast SportsNet Chicago.  “We’re thrilled Scottie will be on our team with Neil and Stacey for the March 4th telecast at Orlando, along with every Bulls playoff telecast on Comcast SportsNet this spring.”

Pip has had limited analyst work (I think I remember seeing him in ESPN's studio a couple times), but it will be interesting to see how he does this time around.  He does have high standards to live up to in the current CSN booth with some of fellow analyst Stacey King recent work.  This continues a great week for Pippen.  Last seen he was laying the smack down on Celebrity All Star Game MVP Justin Bieber.  Shouldn't that get a medal of some kind?

ESPN Exec Scoffs At College Basketball Criticism

Written by Matt Yoder on .

espnskycam
You may remember Real Tweets from Real People examining the incredulous reaction from college basketball fans on Twitter voicing their displeasure with ESPN's ridiculous overhead camera at the Kentucky-Mississippi State basketball game last week.  The overhead camera was one of many broadcast innovations and new tricks that the self-proclaimed "worldwide leader" employed throughout the week on its college basketball broadcasts.  Among the changes made to ESPN's telecasts were...

*Isolated coach cameras on Frank Martin of Kansas State and Bill Self of Kansas during their Big Monday showdown.
*Analysts Jay Bilas and Bill Raftery on opposite ends of the court for West Virginia-Syracuse.
*SkyCam (above) being the primary camera for the Kentucky-Mississippi State game.
*Referee Jim Burr being mic'd up for the Ohio State-Michigan State game.
*Doug Gottlieb going to the production truck to announce for part of the Missouri-Texas A&M game.
*An isolation cam on Duke's Nolan Smith while the Blue Devils were hosting Boston College.

Some of these ideas were intriguing, some pointless, and others exceedingly annoying.  I bring this back to our attention this morning because I came across an interesting quote from ESPN Executive VP Norby Williamson tucked away in Michael Hiestand's excellent USA Today sports media column...

ESPN executive vice president Norby Williamson admitted, "You don't always get things perfect at first." He said he liked elements of the shots focused on players. But he said he wasn't fazed by criticism of the novelties: "You always get negative reaction to change."

Is it really a surprise to see this sort of flippant reaction from an ESPN executive?  I'm sure if everyone loved SkyCam instead of despising it, then ESPN would be beating its chest like King Kong.  The truth is you don't always get negative reaction to change.  Seeing the score of games on the screen for the first time didn't bring a negative reaction.  The 1st & 10 line didn't bring a negative reaction.  I'm sure the change that Edison brought along didn't get a negative reaction either.  (Of course I could be wrong with that)  Change is good... when it's not terrible.  Hopefully this quote from Williamson doesn't mean viewers will be subjected to more high school level chemistry experiments with ESPN's college basketball broadcasts.  Some of the innovations, like the mic'd ref, weren't as bad as others.  However, as the 2010 World Cup proved, ESPN is at their absolute best when they allow the game to speak for itself.

What do you think?  Were ESPN's changes a great idea while knucklehead viewers like us just don't get it, or did ESPN botch their broadcasts for a week just because they could?  We want to hear from you.  What are the best and worst sports broadcast innovations?  Send us your suggestions and we'll have a list put together in the near future.

Is Tony Kornheiser Going Off His Rocker?

Written by Matt Yoder on .

kornheiser
None of these individual stories may have caught your eye, but over the past week, Tony Kornheiser has been in the news for a few stories that make you scratch your head.  The PTI co-host has made news for some outlandish statements, criticism of blogs & tweeting, and his protection of Redskins owner Daniel Snyder.  Is this a trend with TK losing touch with reality, or was it just a bad week?

*First, Packey wrote this about TK's comments on PTI regarding NASCAR being a fixed sport, I thought only pro wrestling and the NBA were fixed:

Tony Kornheiser admitted he doesn't know much about NASCAR. That didn't stop him from making some pretty controversial comments about NASCAR on last Tuesday's PTI:

"Someone I talked to who covered auto racing for a lot of years, said she believed there was a 60 percent chance that [Dale] Junior qualified with a car not quite up to code, and people looked the other way," Kornheiser said.
Yahoo! transcribed the entire conversation between Kornheiser and guest host LeBatard, but the crux of it is that TK and LeBatard are debating whether or not NASCAR is fixed, all based on Dale Jr. having pole position for the race which just so happens to be the 10th anniversary of his dad's death and a 60 percent belief from someone TK.

Although conspiracy theories and sports are nothing new... cough, right David Stern, cough... my guess is that Tony feels rather foolish about this claim now that a 20 year old kid that nobody outside of his immediate family had heard of won NASCAR's biggest race on Sunday.

*Then, there is the ongoing controversy in DC regarding Redskins owner Dan Snyder and his lawsuit against Washington City Paper sportswriter Dave McKenna.  To get you caught up to date, McKenna penned a story that demolished Snyder on numerous fronts.  Snyder then took the step of suing the paper earlier this month for McKenna's piece.  That action set off many fans, writers, and bloggers alike.  Deadspin has linked to the article in question every day since the lawsuit was filed, ripping Snyder and supporting McKenna.  It's one of the biggest stories in Washington sports, and yet Kornheiser has been suspiciously silent regarding the matter.  For a man who hosts a daily radio show in Washington, it should be something that lights up the airwaves.  Only problem is that Snyder owns the station and Kornheiser is a known Snyder supporter.  That creates a huge credibility gap for TK as Pro Football Talk pointed out, both on his radio show and PTI.

TK was further thrown under the journalistic credibility bus by author John Feinstein.  Feinstein wrote on his blog last week that Kornheiser specifically told him that the Redskins owner was off limits on Tony's radio show.  Here's what Feinstein wrote on his blog...

The other exception goes in the other direction: Tony Kornheiser has specifically asked me not to bring up Dan Snyder on his show. I feel queasy about this but Tony’s my friend and it is his show. It isn’t as if there aren’t plenty of other forums for me to talk about Snyder and Snyder is one of those guys Tony simply isn’t going to go after—not because he’s paid by him but because he likes him.

It may be an awkward story for Kornheiser, but this kind of favoritism for one of the most nationally known sports media personalities is embarrassing.  I'm probably one of the biggest PTI fans in the world and think he's great at what he does, but sometimes actions need to be called out regardless of whether you like a guy or not.  At the very least, he should have come out at the beginning of the story and explained himself and his lack of analysis on one of the biggest sports stories in DC.  It's part of the business to be favorable to certain people, but it's a discredit to the public to close your eyes and ears and pretend that nothing is happening.  Kornheiser created a sticky wicket for himself with his refusal to address the controversy at all.

*But, wait, that's not all!  As if TK doesn't have enough questions and problems, he decided to attack the 21st century on his Friday radio show.  From Deadspin is Kornheiser's thoughts on Tweeting, blogging, and all of that stuff that he's apparently too refined to lower himself to take part in...

Look, of all the things that I have done in a career of being a sportswriter for a long period of time — I know I yodel now, but I used to be a legitimate person who went out and wrote, didn't blog, didn't just sit there and give my own opinions on what I was going to eat for breakfast, didn't tweet, didn't do any of these things that so, so diminish the craft and nuance of writing...

Craft and nuance?  Is that what accusing a sport of being fixed based on a 60% hunch or deafening silence regarding his BFF's issues are?  I'm sorry, I must have missed Craft And Nuance 101 to learn those skills before I got my sports blogging license.  Unsurprisingly, critics were quick to pounce.  In spite of his hit television show and his short career as a Monday Night Football analyst, Kornheiser is stuck in a different time with his thoughts on sportswriting and sports media.  For someone who has taken advantage of the new sports media age like perhaps no other, it's amazing how TK could be so far behind on Twitter and blogging.  Of course, there's things like Bleacher Report that give sports blogs a black eye, but the truth is that there is amazing writing all around the country in the world on sports blogs.  Besides, when the old guard is represented by guys like this, it doesn't speak well of the way things used to be.  Also, Twitter has changed the way stories are reported and consumed by sports fans and made access and information more available than ever before.  When these stories are combined together, it makes Kornheiser look out of touch with a growing and changing sports landscape.  Leave us a comment below or vote in the poll on the main page to share your thoughts.
