I'll admit, I was a fan of NBA All Star Weekend... was. This past weekend in Orlando was as gut wrenching as being forced to watch Battlefield Earth on a continuous loop. The only redeemable part of the 2012 NBA All Star experience was seeing LeBron James find a way to actually choke away an exhibition game... and that will be ruined by Skip Bayless and others trying to convince us that it actually mattered.
Everything seemed like an enormous flop - especially the staged, campy, stale, no-name dunk contest that left everyone feeling just fine if we sent it to a merciful execution. I always thought I'd be one of the last holdouts in championing the dunk contest even if it was four D-Leaguers competing. Who doesn't want to see the best athletes in the world do their thing? But when I heard the announcers say about Chase Budinger's second dunk, "That's the motorcycle dunk without the motorcycle," the dunk contest became dead to me.
Usually, the actual All Star Game has just enough defense to prevent it from becoming a total Cirque du Soleil show. Not this year. The added lunacy of seeing Dwight Howard pretend to be Dale Ellis in front of his not-soon-to-be hometown fans was just too much to bear. In fact, most people on Twitter responded in favor of doing away with any and every form of All Star competition. It was that kind of weekend. As always, these are Real Tweets From Real People...
ESPNAtTheBuzzer RIP Slam Dunk Contest. Your last gasp was but a whimper, and the world laughed at you while you took it.
