The Golf Channel's new futuristic gadget will probably scare your children

Written by Brad Gagnon on .

And now we'd like to turn your attention to a new, wicked-ass feat in the world of sports television science: golf's answer to the Skycam, but 1,736 times cooler. Meet the the HoverFly Erista.

Essentially, we're talking about a remote-controlled helicopter -- officially called a quadcoptor -- that will purportedly allow viewers at home to get a birds-eye view of a golfer while he takes a shot. Straight out of a futuristic film like Blade Runner, it's the kind of thing that would scare the living hell out of you while walking down the street, but will likely become commonplace at PGA Tour events before you know it.

Now, watch the video below from Callaway and Odyssey social media maven Chad Coleman and you begin to realize that there might be one tiny problem with the current version of the device: It's freakin' loud. Do you really think Tiger Woods would be cool with something like this lingering above his head during his backswing?

AA Roundtable: The most wonderful time of the year

Written by Matt Yoder on .

AA is launching a roundtable discussion each week on one of the most significant topics we've covered throughout the previous seven days.  Our collection of sports media gurus will take part in a free flowing, often times snarky, often times sardonic e-mail thread and we'll publish the results for you.  Read the entire roundtable after the jump.  This week's topic: is this the best sports day of the year?

Question: It's roundtable time once again!  With the real first round of the NCAA Tournament taking place, it's often referred to as the best two days of the sporting calendar.  You're are all pretty big sports fans (which is why I assume you're here), so is this an assessment you agree with?  Are Thursday and Friday of the first round the best days of the sports year, or would you rather choose something else?  (Super Bowl, New Year's Day, Opening Day, etc.)

Andrew Bucholtz: I always enjoy the NCAA tournament, but for me, the last weekend in October (or whatever weekend happens to coincide with the World Series) marks the best days on the sporting calendar. World Series baseball, regular-season NFL, NCAA and CFL action, regular-season soccer (MLS and international leagues), regular-season NHL (when there isn't a lockout!) and late pre-season or early regular-season NBA represents a pretty compelling slate. For a sports omnivore like me, that trumps any single event, and it makes for an excellent weekend spent in front of the TV.

An awkward handshake/fistbump is the perfect way to start March Madness

Written by Matt Yoder on .

ejgumbel

This awkward exchange between Greg Gumbel and Ernie Johnson is what CBS and Turner's NCAA Tournament partnership is all about.  Two media behemoths coming together as one.  The network guy goes in for the pleasant corporate handshake.  The cable guy comes flying in with his "hip" fist bump.  Ultimatel, it's the fist bump that prevails.

Gumbel should have gone for more of a power play, giving in to EJ's fist bump is just handing him "lead studio anchor" status for the tournament's early days.  You can't give in that easy Greg!

Chael Sonnen calls out Vince McMahon

Written by Matt Yoder on .

UFC head honcho Dana White recently revealed that WWE head honcho Vince McMahon actually wanted to bring the two companies together for a megafight of epic proportions.  No, not CM Punk vs Georges St. Pierre or The Undertaker vs Cain Velasquez.  No, a fight between... McMahon and White.

Thankfully, the McMahon-White showdown doesn't look like it's going to happen in the squared circle or the squared, err, octagon.  However, that didn't stop UFC on Fuel from having some fun at the expense of McMahon's proposed challenge.  Particularly, UFC star Chael Sonnen, who rips McMahon after this tale of the tape (beware Vinny Mac's power strut!).  My favorite line from Sonnen - "Kamala the Ugandan Giant will win an Olympic gold medal in pole vault before you step into the boss' wheelhouse."

While it's easy to dismiss McMahon challenging White, don't underestimate him.  Anyone who can win the Royal Rumble, the WWE Championship, and defeat The Undertaker in a Buried Alive match should be taken seriously.

Rick Reilly reportedly re-signing with ESPN

Written by Matt Yoder on .

Wonder why Rick Reilly looks so happy?  After leaving SI for ESPN in 2007 and then signing a huge contract with ESPN worth about $3 million dollars a year, Reilly has been a bust of Akili Smith like proportions.  Or Tim Couch.  Or JaMarcus Russell.... or insert whatever infamous bust you choose.  His most memorable moments have been bizarre columns in which he's duped by satire, goofy TV segments, and of course his epic Twitter reporting skillz.

Under no metric can Rick Reilly's ESPN tenure be viewed as a success.  That's not to say Reilly can't still deliver a good column or a funny joke on Twitter every now and then.  That's not to say he's not talented and doesn't deserve some of the awards he's won in his career as SI's back page columnist.  But he hasn't come close to justifying his massive contract as his form has slipped and ESPN has struggled to find the right spot for him.

So what's ESPN going to do?

Re-sign Rick Reilly of course, according to Richard Deitsch of SI...

ESPN's solution for March Madness coverage is... Bill Simmons

Written by Matt Yoder on .

ESPN doesn't have rights to the NCAA Tournament, bu tthey are getting creative when it comes to finding ways around covering events they don't have television rights to.  First it was syndicating Spanish language ESPN Deportes on ESPN for the World Baseball Classic.  Now, for the NCAA Tournament, ESPN is offering a new way to take in March Madness... well, at least Grantland is...
