The snow-covered desk makes for a unique studio environment

Written by Matt Yoder on .

Tonight's 1-0 USA victory over Costa Rica in 2014 World Cup Qualifying will be remembered for years and years to come thanks to blizzard conditions we've never seen for a soccer game.  We just need a name for it.  The Snow Bowl is already taken, hmm... maybe the folks at the Weather Channel can think of something since they're into naming every storm with an inch of precipitation these days.  Anyways, credit goes to everyone involved, especially the ESPN broadcast team.  Ian Darke and Taylor Twellman were great in the booth providing context to the unprecedented circumstances.  And the on-site OUTDOOR studio crew of Bob Ley, Alexi Lalas, and Kasey Keller put in yeoman's work in unique conditions.  If there's anyone I want on the front lines in Bristol leading the troops into unknown territory like this, it's General Ley.  He doesn't even need a fluffy winter hat!  That's true leadership!

Kendall Gill reportedly suspended for season after punchup with Tim Doyle

Written by Matt Yoder on .

Remember that crazy story from earlier this week where two basketball analysts in Chicago got in a fight after debating a topic on air? After taking a swing at colleague Tim Doyle, CSN Chicago basketball analyst Kendall Gill was suspended for the rest of the season by the station today.  WBBM's Ryan Baker tweeted about Gill's punishment and CBS Chicago has reported it as well.  (Note: CBS initially had Gill had as fired according to "various reports" and tweets from Gail Fischer sure made it seem like Gill had been canned.)

Gill was initially suspended after the fight while the network underwent an investigation and depending on how long the Bulls season goes, this punishment could last a couple months.  Gill was upset after Doyle criticized his analysis regarding a controversial ending in a Bulls game earlier this week.  The argument then became physical with Gill reportedly throwing a punch at Doyle and blood being drawn.  Doyle spoke about the fisticuffs in an interview this week:

“The business that we are in, sometimes we have to be hard on people or give our opinions,” Doyle explained. “That is what we did. As far as what went on, at first, it was wild. Then it became something I just want to forget about and move forward. … The last 48 hours have been nuts, and that’s it. It’s something that’s going to be over.”

With the proliferation of debating on sports television, it's honestly a surprise that something like this hasn't happened sooner... staged or not.

Dan Dakich has to work really hard not to swear during broadcasts

Written by Matt Yoder on .

Some of our favorite moments in the past few years have been announcers accidentally swearing on air.  Ron Jaworski casually swearing on MNF, Lee Corso saying f*%& it, The Rock on SportsCenter, Lawrence Frank making Jay Crawford VERY uneasy on First Take, and the list goes on.  There's a kind of grade school excitement and glee when someone momentarily forgets they're on television and let's go of their filter.  The only thing better than the swear word that slips out is the awkward, forced apology that comes afterward

But just how hard is it for all these ex-athletes and ex-coaches and broadcasters to prevent their commentary from becoming a bit more colorful?  The Wall Street Journal has an insightful piece on NCAA Tournament broadcasters and their awareness of not letting a curse word escape.  But the highlight of the piece is ESPN college basketball analyst Dan Dakich, who has to take some unusual steps to ensure his analysis stays PC...

Don't even think about asking Tim Tebow any questions whatsoever

Written by Matt Yoder on .

This image emerged on the interwebs yesterday thanks to Romenesko from a Tim Tebow speaking engagement in Corpus Christi, Texas.  The media covering the event were given a handy guide on what to do and what not to do at the event.  Actually, they were given restrictions on covering Tim Tebow that would be on par with a dictator of a small country or principality...

Written by Matt Yoder on .

Games, tip times, announcers, and network assignments have been revealed for Saturday's third round games (I know we've been over this before and that it's actually the second round, but it's just easier for me to go with the official lingo, my apologies).  The Auburn Hills pod gets the national early afternoon timeslots featuring Michigan and Michigan State with the rest of the schedule starting at 5:15 ET.  And as a bonus, there's no games on truTV!  All times are Eastern...

The Golf Channel's new futuristic gadget will probably scare your children

Written by Brad Gagnon on .

And now we'd like to turn your attention to a new, wicked-ass feat in the world of sports television science: golf's answer to the Skycam, but 1,736 times cooler. Meet the the HoverFly Erista.

Essentially, we're talking about a remote-controlled helicopter -- officially called a quadcoptor -- that will purportedly allow viewers at home to get a birds-eye view of a golfer while he takes a shot. Straight out of a futuristic film like Blade Runner, it's the kind of thing that would scare the living hell out of you while walking down the street, but will likely become commonplace at PGA Tour events before you know it.

Now, watch the video below from Callaway and Odyssey social media maven Chad Coleman and you begin to realize that there might be one tiny problem with the current version of the device: It's freakin' loud. Do you really think Tiger Woods would be cool with something like this lingering above his head during his backswing?
