No, NFL.com, that isn't Barrett Jones

Written by Brad Gagnon on .

You're a two-time All-American starter at Alabama with three BCS national championships under your belt, but because you're an offensive lineman you still have trouble getting any respect. That's the world Barrett Jones lives in. At the 2013 NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, Jones noticed that NFL.com made a tiny error when uploading his picture.

Jones is known for his versatility, but changing race is something even he probably isn't capable of. Of course, I'm not sure that would accomplish anything anyway.

NFL.com has since corrected the mistake and we can go back to obsessing over Manti Te'o's 40 time.

Curt Schilling sells off his bloody sock

Written by Jaymes Langrehr on .

Ed Note: The following article regarding the fate of ESPN analyst Curt Schilling's most famous piece of wardrobe appears courtesy Bloguin's central MLB hub, The Outside Corner.

Curt Schilling's financial problems have led him to auction off one of his famous bloody socks.

The stained sock he wore in Game 2 of the 2004 World Series, pitching six innings on a sutured ankle, was sold to an anonymous bidder for $92,613. The more famous bloody sock -- the one from Game 6 of the ALCS that year -- was thrown away after Boston's win in Yankee Stadium. The sock sold at the auction had previously been sitting in baseball's Hall of Fame Museum.

Written by Reva Friedel on .

On Saturday, at the end of the Nationwide Series Drive4COPD 300 in Daytona, a horrific crash sent debris flying into the stands and two dozen spectators were treated for injuries as a result.

A fan in attendance posted a video of the crash to YouTube that instantly went viral (as of now it has over 600,000 views). From the fan's perspective, the crash is horrifying:

Joe Buck may revolutionize baseball broadcasting with the St. Louis Cardinals

Written by Matt Yoder on .

It's been five years since Fox's Joe Buck called a St. Louis Cardinals game locally.  A report in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch says the World Series broadcaster may return to the Cards booth this year for a limited number of appearances, but not in a traditional play by play role.  If Joe Buck does call Cardinals games for Fox Sports Midwest this year and these plans are put into place, it would bring a total transformation to traditional play by play and baseball broadcasting...

Daytona 500 draws highest ratings in 7 years

Written by Matt Yoder on .

Yesterday I asked if Danica Patrick could help turn around NASCAR's struggling ratings with a strong performance from the pole in the Daytona 500.  The question was met in the affirmative.  The 2013 Daytona 500 won by Jimmie Johnson ahead of Dale Earnhardt Jr. was way up in the overnight ratings versus last year with the number moving Fox and NASCAR to do celebratory donuts in the parking lot...

Jacoby Jones to take part in Dancing with the Stars

Written by Joe Lucia on .

Jacoby Jones got his wish. This year's sports-related contestant on ABC's Dancing with the Stars will be none other than the wide receiver from the Super Bowl champion Baltimore Ravens, who lobbied for a spot on the dance competition on Jimmy Kimmel Live after the victory. The announcement was made in a commercial break during Sunday night's Academy Awards ceremony.

Chael Sonnen licked Rashad Evans' shoe on live television

Written by Joe Lucia on .

During last Tuesday's episode of UFC Tonight on Fuel TV, UFC middleweight fighter and UFC Tonight analyst Chael Sonnen came out and said that if Dan Henderson lost to Lyoto Machida during Saturday's UFC 157 event, he'd lick fellow cohost (and UFC fighter) Rashad Evans' shoe during the post-fight show on Fuel TV.

Well, Machida beat Henderson by split decision in a bit of a disappointing fight, and on the post-fight show, Sonnen lived up to his word. After some prompting from host Jay Glazer, Evans put his foot on the desk, and Sonnen gave the shoe a nice, solid lick. Sonnen is becoming pretty likable after initially driving people up the wall in hyping his middleweight title fights with Anderson Silva, coming off as extremely well-spoken and knowledgeable on both UFC Tonight and on The Ultimate Fighter, where he's coaching against UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones this season.

Erin Andrews stonewalls 50 Cent

Written by Matt Yoder on .

Fox's Daytona 500 prerace show featured Erin Andrews in her "Fox signed me to this huge contract and I need to randomly show up at our biggest sporting events" role by... randomly walking down pit road with absolutely no purpose whatsoever.  Andrews wandered down pit road strangely in awe of the entire scene, awkwardly bumping into Kevin Harvick, and then... hey look, it's 50 Cent!  And in the strangest/most uncomfortable sidline reporting moment since Joe Namath wanted to kiss Suzy Kolber, 50 Cent went in for the liplock and Erin Andrews blocked his advance like Dikembe Mutombo.  Truly a great moment in Fox Sports history.

Can Danica Patrick save NASCAR's shrinking ratings?

Written by Matt Yoder on .

The Daytona 500 takes place today and the racing world is in a frenzy with Danica Patrick starting The Great American Race from pole position.  Patrick is of course the first female driver to win a NASCAR Sprint Cup pole, continuing a career of trailblazing and breaking down barriers that began in IndyCar.  With Patrick making the move from IndyCar racing to NASCAR, her story (and celebrity) is being brought to a wider fanbase.  Dare I say it (and with apologies to Tim Tebow), today's Daytona 500 represents new heights for DanicaMania, even compared to when she was leading the Indy 500 once upon a time.

Patrick has been everywhere this week from SportsCenter to the Today Show and countless stops in between.  She was certainly a star in the IndyCar world and has been a crossover celebrity (think Maxim, GoDaddy and more) for some time, but being in NASCAR has only increased her profile.  Let's face the facts, Danica Patrick was perhaps the last attention grabbing element open wheel racing had left... if you don't count Helio Castroneves' Dancing With the Stars appearances that is.  NASCAR has long since lapped open wheel racing several times over in the battle for American racing supremacy and Danica needed to make the switch to continue to grow her own brand and compete in the nation's number one racing series.

Today's Daytona 500 doesn't just represent an opportunity for Danica Patrick though, it also represents a huge opportunity for NASCAR.  Patrick's success on the track at Daytona is happening at just the right time for a sport that badly needs to be reinvigorated and reach a new audience once again.

A broadcasting career isn't in Derek Jeter's future

Written by Joe Lucia on .

New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter's career is winding down, and could finish up in the next season or two. But when Jeter retires, don't expect to see him in the broadcast booth. During an interview on Brandon Steiner's SteinerCast podcast, Jeter said he has no desire to enter a career in broadcasting once his on-field career is completed.
