Doug Gottlieb wants to make it clear to everyone — he thinks he should be the next head basketball coach at Oklahoma State, where he starred from 1997-2000.

The Fox Sports Radio host interviewed for the job before, in 2017, literally one day after Fox had hired him. The Cowboys chose Mike Boynton. OSU fired Boynton Thursday after seven seasons.

So once again, Gottlieb has thrown his hat into the ring. He told Oklahoma City’s WWLS “The Sports Animal” Monday he’s the perfect guy for the job.

“You know I want that job,” Gottlieb said (via The Oklahoman). “(I understand) what we have, what we need, what needs to be fixed, how to get the culture back in line, how to bring back the alumni, how we need to connect better with Stillwater and with the students and all of Oklahoma. I fully believe I can fill up the gym and I can get the NIL.”

Apparently, the feeling is not mutual within the OSU athletic department. The Oklahoman “confirmed that Gottlieb was told he will not be considered for the job.”

That doesn’t mean he can’t still publicly make his case, and who knows, if the right boosters stand up for Gottlieb, things could change. His main drawback is his lack of any college coaching experience.

“I understand anyone’s hesitance when you haven’t seen me draw up a play,” Gottlieb told WWLS. “I get it. It’s different. But if you want a different result, you have to try a different path. That’s life 101.”

Gottlieb does have coaching experience, at the AAU level, and he led the U.S. men’s basketball team to a gold medal at the Maccabiah Games in 2017 and 2022.

The Doug Gottlieb Show host revealed last year on his All Ball podcast he had interviewed for the head coaching job at Wisconsin-Green Bay.

He said on that podcast his ultimate goal is to coach college basketball.

“That’s what I want to do,” Gottlieb said. “But it has to be the right thing. It has to be the right AD and you have to hit the right notes with the right message.”

Vox Media as a whole was built out of sports blog network SB Nation, but more and more sports sites have been leaving that company lately. The latest is Outsports, which focuses on LGBTQ+ coverage in sports. Cyd Zeigler, Jr. and Jim Buzinski founded Outsports in 1999 (even before SB Nation’s 2003 founding) and sold it to SBN in 2011, with Buzinski and Zeigler continuing to operate it. The site has now been acquired by LGBTQ+ publisher Q.Digital in an all-stock move, as per Sara Guaglione of Digiday:

Here’s more from that piece:

The non-cash transaction means Q.Digital effectively takes over Outsports’ cost of operations and revenue from Vox Media, keeping the team intact. All seven people on the Outsports team have moved to Q.Digital as part of the “acqui-hire” deal, including co-founders Jim Buzinski and Cyd Zeigler and five contributors, said Scott Gatz, CEO of Q.Digital. Outsports officially migrated to Q.Digital on March 4, Buzinski said.

…Vox Media acquired 24-year-old Outsports in 2011, and it was the only LGBTQ publication at the company, Buzinski said. When Gatz heard that Vox Media was looking at ways to scale back its portfolio at the end of last year and that the Outsports team was at risk of shuttering, Q.Digital swooped in, he told Digiday.

“In order for Outsports to grow its audience and its business, together we decided that now is the right time for us to find it a new home. We are thrilled with this new partner that directly aligns with their storytelling capabilities and will be a strong fit in terms of the business they’re building,” said a Vox Media spokesperson. They declined to comment on the financial terms of the transaction. “We wanted to set Outsports up either independently or at a new home in order to continue their important work,” the spokesperson added.

…Buzinski described Outsports as a small publication in a big portfolio under Vox Media, and it will now get more attention with a smaller publisher. (Outsports sat within SB Nation, Vox Media’s network of over 300 sports blogs.) “It was never really a great fit,” Buzinski said. “We were never really a focus of their sales strategy.”

And here’s more from a Q.Digital press release:

“LGBTQ+ athletes have been coming out and conquering the sports worlds at historic rates, and it’s clear from previous coverage across our platforms that our audience is incredibly hungry for their stories,” says Q.Digital CEO Scott Gatz. “It’s very exciting to expand our storytelling with the experts from Outsports, especially in time for the Summer Games in Paris where more queer athletes will be competing than ever before.”

As part of the acquisition, Outsports’ co-founders Jim Buzinski and Cyd Zeigler, along with their entire staff of contributors, will join the Q.Digital editorial team. “We created Outsports way back in 1999 when gay athletes were scared to be visible and our stories weren’t being told,” Zeigler and Buzinski said in a joint statement. “Our mission was to share the sports news that impacted our community and now, with the support of the Q.Digital team, Outsports will produce even more inspirational, award-winning journalism.”

Maybe the most notable thing across those pieces is the “we were never really a focus of their strategy” line from Buzinski to Guaglione. And that’s certainly the case in the case of Outsports. Their focus was always quite different from the rest of SB Nation, and it’s quite possible to see an ad sales benefit there for a publisher with more LGBTQ+ coverage that can sell ads specifically to brands looking to appeal to a LGBTQ+ audience. And this is a more positive transition than many recent domain name acquisitions, with the site retaining its full current staff.

But there is also a wider thing here of Vox moving away from a lot of their sports sites. That’s included several rounds of personnel cuts and layoffs in the past few years through cutting loose a lot of individual sites. It will be interesting to see how Outsports does at Q.Digital, and also what sports coverage Vox and SB Nation do continue with.

The Chicago Bears officially moved on from Justin Fields over the weekend, trading the 2021 first-round pick to the Pittsburgh Steelers and ending a rocky three-year tenure in the Windy City.

The big question of the weekend was simple: Is Fields at fault or did the Bears fail him?

The answer, according to Good Morning Football‘s Kyle Brandt, lies somewhere in the middle.

Brandt, a Chicago-area native and Bears fan, had a lot to say about the trade on Monday morning.

“I think [Fields’ time in Chicago] was complicated and it was occasionally exhilarating and extremely disappointing. I hate that when it comes to Justin Fields and the Bears you have to pick one way. You have to say either Fields was terrible or the Bears blew it. It’s completely binary, overly reductive, and simplistic. It’s not how real people think, it’s not how real people talk. I think it’s reflective of politics where you have to go one way. It’s nonsense.”

There’s plenty of blame to go around for both sides, Brandt went on to explain. “What the Bears did to and for Justin Fields as a rookie was ridiculous and probably even dangerous. Go back and watch him against the Browns, I can’t believe he even survived the game, it was terrible.”

Fields was sacked nine times in his first career start, a 26-6 loss to the Cleveland Browns in Week 3 of the 2021 season.

His second season wasn’t much better, as Brandt notes. “His second season he was throwing to [Byron] Pringle and [Dante] Pettis. It was bad. But on the other side, there were so many plays to be made. He went 10-28. I love Fields. There were so many times, especially in year two, that he had the ball at the end of the game and blew it. Justin Fields, I like him. He blew it. The Bears, I like them. They blew it.”

Brandt went on to note how the 2023 regular-season finale against the Green Bay Packers perfectly encapsulated both the Bears and Fields’ woes. “The grand finale of all of it was the last game of this year, the last game Fields would ever play as a Bear. They go to Lambeau Field with a chance to knock the Packers out of the playoffs and they scored nine points. So there’s fault on both sides, and that’s OK! Fields blew it, the Bears blew it, and if you’re saying it’s only one person’s fault, you blew it.”

Jordan Poole and the Washington Wizards are the laughingstock of the NBA. And after Poole was elbowed in the face on a drive to the hoop by Boston Celtics defender Jrue Holiday on Sunday evening, NBC Sports Boston broadcaster Drew Carter couldn’t help but draw parallels to Poole’s most infamous off-court incident.

After Poole was fouled by Holiday late a in a blowout loss by Washington, the play-by-play man Carter made a reference to the infamous preseason incident between Poole and Golden State Warriors center Draymond Green.

“Let’s just say that’s not the worst shot Jordan Poole has taken to the face,” Carter said. “Not even close.”

Not for nothing, game analyst Brian Scalabrine reminded the audience that the difference was this shot from Holiday was not “friendly fire” like the punch from Green was.

During training camp in 2022, Poole allegedly called Green an “expensive backpack” for Warriors star Steph Curry. Given the reported existing tension between the two, Green snapped and socked Poole during a team scrimmage. Footage of the altercation came out via TMZ soon after, and Green was sent away from the team in the lead-up to the regular season.

Both players coexisted throughout the 2022-23 season before Poole was traded to Washington for point guard Chris Paul last summer. Green signed a contract extension before facing another suspension last fall.

Unfortunately for Poole, this is now his reputation in the NBA. Even as far away from the Bay Area as Boston, Poole cannot escape being the guy who got punched by the defensive player of his generation.

After two years as manager of the New York Mets, Buck Showalter is returning to television.

On Monday, MLB Network announced that Showalter had rejoined the network as an analyst. He previously worked for MLB Network during the 2020 and 2021 seasons before leaving to take the Mets job.

Showalter and MLB Network SVP of Production Marc Caiafa both lauded his return.

“I enjoyed my time at MLB Network with people I know and respect, so when this opportunity came up, I couldn’t say no,” said Showalter. “There are many ways to analyze baseball, and I appreciate the different perspectives that come with working at the network. We all bring what we bring and it’s very entertaining. The place is filled with smart, passionate people, who want to teach and grow the game, so I’m excited to be back on the team.”

“We loved having Buck with us a couple years ago given his on-field expertise and years of baseball knowledge,” said Marc Caiafa, MLB Network Senior Vice President of Production. “Having gone up against the new faces and stars of our game, and managing under the new on-field rules, Buck will only make our content stronger this season.”

In addition to his previous work with MLB Network, Showalter had two stints at ESPN as an analyst on Baseball Tonight and was the focus of an edition of MLB Network Presents in 2015.

Richard Sherman has not appeared on Undisputed since being arrested for a DUI last month, but his FS1 tenure doesn’t appear to be over.

Sherman was arrested during the early morning hours on February 24 after a Washington State trooper noticed “the odor of intoxicants” on the retired NFL cornerback during a traffic stop for speeding. The following Monday, Undisputed returned to FS1’s airwaves after a week’s vacation and Sherman was noticeably absent. Sherman has yet to appear on Undisputed following the arrest, but recently claimed he will be back.

Last week, The Richard Sherman Podcast released its first episode for Colin Cowherd’s The Volume since Feb. 12. The NFL analyst also tweeted for the first time since his arrest last week, prompting someone to inquire about his status with FS1 and Undisputed.

“I will be back,” Sherman responded. “This was the plan all along. When football topics are getting hotter I will be back.”

Sherman joined FS1 last summer as part of Skip Bayless’s quest to revamp Undisputed without Shannon Sharpe. When Andrew Marchand reported on Sherman’s addition to Undisputed, he reported those appearances were expected to be “around 50-100 shows per year, mostly during football season.”

Considering the fluidity of his schedule, Sherman can miss a month and still see his show appearances fall within the 50-100 episode range for the year. It would seem, however, that NFL free agency should fall into the category of “football topics are getting hotter.” Between Caleb Williams, Russell Wilson, Kirk Cousins, Aaron Donald, and Aaron Rodgers considering a run at becoming Vice President of the United States, there has been no shortage of hot football topics in recent weeks.

To further depict the NFL is still hot, Undisputed has continued to feature either Keyshawn Johnson or Michael Irvin on every show since Sherman’s absence began last month. Johnson and Irvin are obviously known more for the NFL than anything else. And with Undisputed’s floundering ratings, Sherman might not have the luxury of waiting for the right topic before returning to the show.

While Sherman has stated he will be back and his current absence is just part of the plan, Bayless and FS1 have not issued any updates on the analyst following his arrest.

Stan Van Gundy has never been one to shy away from political opinions, whether while working as an NBA head or as an analyst at ESPN and now TNT Sports. So of course Van Gundy had thoughts when news broke last week that NFL quarterback Aaron Rodgers was a candidate for vice president on a ticket with Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

Appearing on The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz last week, Van Gundy railed against RFK Jr.’s political career and detailed the politician’s fall from grace.

“This is one of the idiots who spreads misinformation about vaccinations everywhere. His entire family has disavowed him as a political candidate,” Van Gundy said. “He’s an embarrassment to an iconic political family … who all just want us to ignore this guy. This is a joke.”

While Kennedy has plenty of concerning opinions about science and public health in his own right, Van Gundy believes the Rodgers subplot is uniquely troubling.

“(Considering Rodgers) really just emphasizes what kind of a clown Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has become,” Van Gundy said. “This guy was one of the preeminent environmental lawyers in the country doing some good work, and then he went off the rails as an anti-vax guy.”

The Associated Press reported on numerous comments denying the safety and efficacy from RFK Jr. over the years, even beyond the COVID-19 pandemic. Anti-vaccine lobbying groups and political action committees have supported Kennedy’s campaign.

So while Kennedy went “off the rails” long ago according to Van Gundy, if the son of the assassinated former attorney general and presidential candidate is truly considering Rodgers as veep, he is truly a lost cause.

“Robert F. Kennedy Jr. knows damn well he’s not going to be president,” Van Gundy said. “He’s just trying to gain attention, and certainly this is a way he can get some attention, saying he’s going to get Aaron Rodgers as VP.”

The RFK Jr. campaign has been relatively quiet and unimpactful since the beginning, but Van Gundy clearly believes it signifies something larger about issues in politics and throughout the United States.

Full Court Press has been embedded with these three players throughout this record-breaking season, capturing key moments such as Kamilla Cardoso’s game-winning three-pointer to send South Carolina to the SEC Championship; documenting Kiki Rice’s experiences as the first college athlete, male or female, to have an NIL deal with Jordan brand; and filming the lead up to Caitlin Clark passing Kelsey Plum as the all-time leading scorer in NCAA women’s basketball and passing Pete Maravich as the all-time leading scorer in the history of NCAA collegiate basketball in her final year at Iowa. The show will take audiences from Paris to Brazil, from sold out arenas in Baton Rouge to Iowa City for the biggest matchups, all to give fans a window into this unique moment in the history of the sport.

Full Court Press is directed by Kristen Lappas, who also directed Giannis: The Marvelous Journey for Prime Video and the multi-part 30 For 30 film Dream On for ESPN. It’s a project from production companies Omaha Productions and Words & Pictures.

Behind-the-scenes series are always fun, and one covering just three players (who had standout years for various reasons) throughout a full season has some solid potential.

John Kruk might not be known for his interview prowess, but maybe that’s just because no one ever realized he’s capable of being the next Barbara Walters.

Kruk and play-by-play voice Tom McCarthy were on the call for the Philadelphia Phillies Spring Training game against the Toronto Blue Jays Sunday afternoon. During the game, they welcomed Phillies second baseman Bryson Stott onto the broadcast for an interview from the dugout and it was a question from Kruk that elicited some tears.

“You played in the World Series your rookie year, last year you went to Game 7 of the NLCS,” Kruk noted to set up his question. “Is the best feeling you’ve ever felt in your life was when she squeezed your finger for the first time?”

Last November, Stott shared news that he and his fiancé Dru White welcomed their baby daughter into the world with a social media post announcing, “She’s here!” Needless to say, yes, becoming a parent was a better feeling for Stott than getting to the World Series.

Stott responded to Kruk’s question with a wholesome smile and a “Yeah,” before he immediately became emotional. “Sorry,” Stott said as he got a little choked up. “Yeah, there’s no better feeling.”

“You’re gonna be a hell of a dad, my friend,” Kruk said after witnessing Stott’s emotions.

Kruk is on the Phillies broadcast to offer baseball analysis and provide some comedic relief, but if the former first baseman can stir up that kind of emotion during an in-game Spring Training interview, maybe he’s being underutilized.

While their NBA careers overlapped for 15 years, LeBron James and JJ Redick never found themselves on the same team.

Until now.

According to The Athletic’s Andrew Marchand, the Los Angeles Lakers superstar and former shooting guard-turned-ESPN analyst are joining forces to start a podcast. Titled Mind the Game, the podcast currently doesn’t have any corporate backing or advertising sponsors.

The first episode will release on Tuesday, with new episodes being released weekly. The show will be available on YouTube and all major podcast platforms, and will be joint produced by James’ Uninterrupted and Redick’s ThreeFourTwo Productions

“It’s meant to be a very free-flowing conversation about the sport and about the game,” Redick told Marchand of the show. “If you look at it in a very simplistic way, it’s just about basketball.”

In a statement, James added: “I’m really proud of what we’ve done to innovate in sports media… When I do a project, the only thing I think about is whether me and my friends would watch it. That is definitely the case with Mind the Game. Everything doesn’t need to be designed for internet culture and clicks.”

The idea of James starting his own weekly podcast is certainly intriguing, especially with the Lakers in the midst of a late-season playoff push. It’s also notable that the podcast will feature not only the NBA’s biggest star, but also a member of ESPN’s top broadcast team in Redick, who was promoted after Doc Rivers made the in-season jump to take the Milwaukee Bucks’ head coaching job earlier this year.

Having combined to play nearly 40 seasons in the NBA between them, James and Redick certainly have no shortage of experience to draw on. While the sports podcast market is certainly oversaturated, you’d be hard-pressed to find one with more star power than this one. It will be interesting to see how the project evolves both from a content and business standpoint moving forward.

Amin Elhassan has never been shy to offer criticism, whether it be on the air or on social media.

But over the weekend, the tables were turned on the Oddball host after he participated in the Athletes Unlimited Celebrity Hoops Classic celebrity basketball game in Dallas.

As shared by Winsidr’s Myles Ehrlich on X, Elhassan took one of the worst jump shots you will ever see during the event’s pregame warmups. While his form started find enough, the end result saw the former Phoenix Suns front office member’s hands twist in a way not commonly seen on the basketball court as the shot landed inches away from the rim.

Unsurprisingly, Elhassan’s fans and critics alike were eager to chime in on his sorry excuse for a jumper. To his credit, the Meadowlark Media host was more than willing to play along, retweeting some of the best nicknames he received as a result of the video, including “No.J. Mayo,” “James Unworthy” and “Pray Young.” A full list can be found on Elhassan’s X feed.

How can somebody who has spent so much of his life around basketball have such an ugly jumper? As Elhassan explained in a video posted by SNY’s Khristina Williams, there were several factors at play.

“I’m fasting, so this is the holy month of Ramadan. Y’all picking on me, I’m trying to be holy. I’m out here not drinking and eating,” he said. “No. 2, I haven’t played basketball since the 2017 NBA Finals. So that’s a long a** layoff for me to come out of retirement, running up and down here. No. 3, those small balls are really light. So it like flies.”

Elhassan also noted that he has a crooked pinky finger and an injured wrist and back. For good measure, he added, “F*** y’all anyway.”

By this point, Elhassan’s athleticism — or lack thereof — has been well documented. But as was the case with his short-lived appearance on American Ninja Warrior, he’s the one who wins in the end by turning all of this into content.

After 24 seasons behind the microphone at Oracle Park as the PA announcer for the San Francisco Giants, Renel Brooks-Moon will not return to the role in 2024, the team announced Monday.

Brooks-Moon had been with the team since they moved into Oracle Park in 2000.

The Giants released a statement thanking Brooks-Moon for her service and calling the decision to part ways “mutual and amicable.”

NBC Bay Area’s Giants reporter Alex Pavlovic shared the statement, which can be read below.

Brooks-Moon was one of MLB’s first female African-American public address announcers and was the second female public address announcer in Giants history, following Sherry Davis who served in the role from 1993-99.

The Giants plan to name the PA booth at Oracle Park after Brooks-Moon in the future, and there will be a ceremony held during a game.

Per the statement, the sides were in discussions on a contract extension but obviously, that didn’t come to be. Following Monday’s announcement, plenty of fans and media members took to social media to voice their displeasure.

The past couple of offseasons have been particularly tough on Giants fans, as the team continues to strike out on big-name free agents such as Aaron Judge last offseason and Shohei Ohtani this offseason. Losing a beloved and respected voice of the team likely won’t do any favors for the organization.

Bill Simmons has often been accused of being a Boston sports homer.

But when it comes to the current state of the New England Patriots, “The Sports Guy” has some less than flattering opinions.

In recent months, Simmons has made a habit of filming YouTube shorts, which feature him walking around suburban Los Angeles neighborhoods while giving takes. In his latest video, The Ringer founder can be seen ranting about the Patriots, who have had a relatively quiet start to the 2024 offseason.

“I’m trying to figure out what the Patriots are doing. Right now, they have the most money to spend of any team in the league, but free agency’s basically over,” Simmons said. “They have the third, I think 35th, 68th and 103rd picks out of the top 105. They don’t have a future QB. They don’t have a left tackle. They don’t have an impact receiver. Their only above average skill position guy is Rhamondre Stevenson, who’s not even a top 10 running back. They’re a D+ offense. New coach. They’re the cheapest team in the last 10 years for spending.

“And I guess my question is, is this just going to be the Patriots until Bob Kraft dies? Just super cheap. They’ve spent the least amount of money for the last 10 years. They let Brady go, then they blame Belichick for that. And now it just feels like they’re going to trade backwards from No. 3 and get a bunch of picks and tell everyone how smart they are. And meanwhile, we’re going to pass up a franchise QB. And not spend money. Great.”

This isn’t the first time that Simmons has expressed skepticism regarding Robert Kraft, as he also slammed the portrayal of the Patriots owner — particularly in contrast to Belichick — in the Apple TV+ docuseries, The Dynasty. And to Simmons’ point, New England’s roster is pretty uninspiring, as the Patriots currently rank second in cap space and 28th in the NFL in active cap spending, according to OverTheCap.com.

But as the Houston Texans showed a year ago, all it takes is one draft class to turn things around. Until then, Simmons will have to settle for continuing to rant while taking walks, which must be quite the visual for The Sports Guy’s neighbors.
