Another day, another fantastic Mike Francesa clip. This one comes to us courtesy Jimmy Traina and his debut Big Buzz column at Fox Sports (although my heart was set on the Fox Clicks name). Here Mike in Long Island has a simple request - can Mike Francesa, the sports pope of New York, name the head coach of the New York Rangers. Instead of answering the question and moving on while claiming a victory over his many pranksters and haters, Francesa goes on a self-righteous rant about how "now is not the right time to talk hockey on a Football Friday." It's hilarious to see YouTube commenters of all people poke holes in this theory because Mike was willing to talk about A-Rod and the Knicks on that Football Friday. During a 5 hour show, it's hard to envision one call about hockey ruining everything.
Of course, perhaps Francesa was inadvertently proving the caller's point for him, because he never did name the Rangers head coach...
This video clip begs the question - does the recently named Most Important Person In Sports Talk Radio not know the head coach of the NHL team that plays right in his backyard? What a silly question. This is Mike Francesa we're talking about. Of course he knows the answer is Mike Keenan.
I loved his response to not give into the caller. He definitely knows the coach's name, but not necessarily how to pronounce it.
The longest delayed answer ever. "Let me rant for a few minutes while I Google this shit. Internet down? Dammit! Next collah!"
You commenters do realize he has had The Rangers coach on at least one time? (although I think it was twice) I don't know how you all don't understand Francesa by now. He was simply flexing his proverbial muscle to prove a point 1. It's his show and he will talk about what he wants and if he doesn;t want to say it he doesn't have to 2. Even if he didn't know his name it doesn't matter 3. He didn't want to give the mongo the power of making him do something so he didn't say it out of spite.
There are too many sports in the NYC metro area.Given free agency and the turnstile known as the coaching profession,it's not unusual for sportscasters to use cheat sheets when they are announcing and for newspapers to employ several sports writers.
I know people like how he's honest about how he doesn't care for the sport til the playoffs but humor me and know the damned basics about the teams. Especially the biggest team locally, Makes it seem like we aren't a bunch of assholes annoying you the sports pope on high
Ya I don't get the hostility towards it either. If you're a hockey fan, look, windbags aren't going to acknowledge the sport. So why bother acknowledging them? you know where to get your hockey talk, take your listening pleasures there. Why bother trying to get these idiots to talk hockey? they don't get the game, their analysis would be shit anyways. Who cares what they think? Like mike said, let's stay on our sides and let the meatheads stay on theirs. We don't want them in our sport, and we enjoy it much better without them. So stop calling windbags like mike Francisco or whatever his name is.
@JoeG1011 I think Vigneault was on once after he was hired and another time before the season started.
